Competitors: This hospital was just awesome in my treatment. The staff was friendly, generally responsive.
Comments: My only tiny little complaint was pain meds. My surgery was at 8 in the morning, by the time I was in my room it was probably noon or 1. I had the Morphine PCA and I used it (allowed every 12 minutes) as needed. At 5 am the next morning the morphine ran out. I asked for additional pain meds, even though I wasn't dying I was pretty uncomfortable. The request was either forgotten or ignored until after a walk I tracked down my overnight nurse who checked and said I was only allowed one PCA thing of morphine. That was fine, I asked for something else for pain...it was like 6 am by this point. I didn't use the 'every 12 minute' dosing...in fact had been several hours throughout the day without any at all. I was never given any pain meds until about discharge time of 6pm!!!! I'm completely not a wimp and don't mind roughing it but I think better attention should be paid to pain meds. I'm a lot tougher with pain than a lot of people.

Competitors: A very nice hospital (new) and they made sure that bariatric patients had private rooms
Comments: Coming out of surgery, I had to wait in Post-Op Recovery for 6-7 hours because there were no beds available. During that time, family were waiting to see me and had been there for 11 hours. They allowed my husband to see me for 5 minutes during that time but no one else. Upon arriving to my room I had the best aid/tech but the nurse was horrible. I continued to receive better attention/care from the techs. Also, I've never witnessed in a hospital it taking 20 min (consecutive times) for a call button to be answered. This is really a scary thought if you might be dying on the floor. My stay was extended by 2 days, making my stay a total of 4. I can honestly say it was the lack of administering things on time/attention that may have kept me there. The 3rd day I finally broke down and cried to the nurse in charge for 30 minutes telling her I thought I'd been mistreated after going through such a major surgery. After this happened, that shift was 10x better but went back to the same thing after they left for the night. Susan and Deanna the techs truely have caregiver hearts and are pure gold. Other than that, and the nice private room, I can't say I'd ever want to stay here again.

How Selected: Inova Fair Oaks was my surgeon's hospital of choice and I'd heard many good things about the quality of care provided.
Competitors: Bar none, this is the best hospital I've ever used. Every caregiver was attentive, friendly, and helpful, especially the excellent nursing staff.
Comments: I live just a few blocks away from Prince William Hospital, but for any non-emergency issues, I will gladly make the 30 - 45 minute drive to Fair Oaks for treatment.

How Selected: It was the hospital my surgeon was affiliated with and where he performed most of his procedures.
Competitors: The unit specifically for obesity was excellent, however upon readmission for complications, the E.R. was totally unprepared and uneducated.
Comments: Everyone on the unit for surgery is in sync with the surgeons and patients procedures. Be aware of the need to come back for complications. I had Radiology try to make me drink something carbonated with sugar in it and it was virtually impossible for them to get an IV started due to dehydration. They needed an anesthesiologist who made over a dozen attempts to get a line started in me. It's important that patients know what they can and can't have.

How Selected: This is where my surgeon participates in the WLS program. I'm not sure I would select it again. Your questions on this survey don't deal with customer satis
Comments: Like most hospitals, iNOVA FairOaks was no place to rest and recover. Everything that could beep did, and often, and my vitals were checked every hour on the hour. Surely, the floors don't need buffing EVERY afternoon; there must be a high/low occupancy time when maintenance could be scheduled. What really bothered me about the hospital was they didn't give me my normal medications as they said they would even after going over them and the times I take them MULTIPLE times. I take medication for migraines and after 3 days (forgot to take the day before surguery due to "preping") a big one was coming on. I pretty much had to beg for my medication, which I got after I complained to the anesthesiologist who came by for a survey since they said it affected the pain killers (which I wasn't really using). Hence the Poor rating on the pain medications. The nurses were really great with the exception of the day nurse on the first day; however, I was snappy from surgery and I suspect she was at the end of a very long day. All of the other nurses (Maria, Azra) and aide/techs (Marta, forget the other's name) were fabulous... but the hospital could use a small book like in hotels to tell you how to use their gadgets, which they expect you to know how to use so you don’t have to ask a crabby nurse. They have a help phone number, but it is always busy. Their media/audio/IT support for the patient basically isn't there... or should I say for the spouse so they stop driving the patient nuts. I would suggest that when they take people for tests that they don't leave them sitting in the hallway for 20+ minutes several times for people to stare at as they walk by. Surely there is somewhere they can get them out of public view. Hence the poor rating on the privacy.

How Selected: Bariatric Center of Excellence
Competitors: Better than the average
Comments: The staff supporting the Bariatric Center of Excellence here are very good. A number of them have worked hard for special certifications in Bariatric nursing and practice, and they really know and care about what they are doing. Some of them are also alumni of bariatric surgery themselves. The pre-surgical nurse I met with during my pre-op testing is one, and she gave me such a dose of inspiration and hope! The ratings I gave to the general helpfulness and pain medication questions are averages across all staff. The one weak spot in the Inova Fair Oaks program is in the consistency of hospital after-care. Some of the staff at the hospital are really excellent. They were responsive, thorough, respectful, and were clearly keeping track of vitals, progress, comfort, and the things that are beyond patient knowledge or capability, especially in that confusing and weakened post-op state. I did, however, encounter a bad apple or two -- for example, a night shift nurse who seemed to have some kind of agenda against pain control, and ignored my calls that I was having trouble breathing. Far, far too much time elapsed until someone bothered to check my vitals and noted how low my oxygenation had gotten. Then they took me seriously, but they should have done so at least an hour earlier. Unfortunately, this was in the middle of the night, and one of the few times I did not have someone with me. I'd recommend (for anytime anyone spends in any hospital, really) having a family member or friend with you as much of the time as possible. If everything is going well, they are great moral support. If you run into one of these bad apples, or if you are at a busier hospital and it gets overwhelmed, they can advocate for you and make sure that you are getting the care you need. You can't really do that on your own when you're wiped out from surgery, medicated, or in a lot of pain.
