i am very familiar with shady grove and holy cross hospitals and they excel in every area compared to INOVA Fairfax. |
| Comments: |
pre-surgery and surgery center staff were wonderful!! when i was in my hospital room, however, the nursing staff was horrible. they were rude. they assumed lap-band and gastric bypass were "the same thing" (as one nurse told me). they were unresponsive to calls for assistance. (it took over 90 minutes for them to check on a beeping IV machine). i could list many other problems. if you're interested, feel free to contact me directly. |

I think the hospital was wonderful and the nurses were so upbeat which put me at ease. The only down side is that my nurse on saturday was slow to respond and didn't listen very well. The other downer was that my DH had to pay for parking on the day of surgery and out of pocket the next day too.. given the hospital asked for their 10% of coinsurance upfront. All in all, very happy from my perspective on care.. |

| I had plastic surgery and my surgeon is affiliated with this hospital. I have also heard very great things about this hospital for WLS patients and for plastic surgery patients. |
| Competitors: |
Wonderful--this hospital was top notch. The let you order food off a menu and it tasted great! The staff was so caring and considerate. The staff was obviously very overworked, but they never made me feel like I was bothering them. I really loved the staff. |
| Comments: |
Great hospital--I would go there again for any further elective surgery. I do not hesitate to recommend this hospital to my friends and family. |

In general my experience was pretty good. I was not provided with a abdominal binder, even after I had asked several times, they said they did not have one even though my Dr's office said the hospital would provide one. Other then that every thing went very well. |

One of the best in the D.C. area but very hectic. Best surgical staff I've every encountered. |
| Comments: |
Surgical staff was absolutely great. From the minute I checked in at 6am through my post-op stay in the post-anastesia care unit, the care was excellent. Once moved to a "regular" floor, care dropped from excellent to adequate. Nurses are very busy but good. Pretty loud, even during the night, when I could hear announcements over PA for arrival of trauma patients. Bring ear plugs and you'll be fine and in good hands! |

| My cardiologist suggested I choose this hospital because it is a full service facility. Initially, I had chosen a hospital closer to home. I'm glad I did go. The staff was great and very attentive. There was a huge emergency on Sunday which took a lot of the nursing staff. But whenever I had a question or needed something, someone was always available. The Sunday night staff was a bit off. I'm sure a lot of that had to do with the overflow from the day's emergency.

It compares favorable to Virginia Hospital Center, GWU, and Sibley. I've spent time in all of these. In fact, the best care I've received has been at Virginia Hospital Center and Fairfax. |

| I was admitted to the emergency room there in April 2001 with kidneys and liver totally shut down from an infection. (I thought I had the flu.) They saved my life. |

I had my colonoscopy and egd at Northern Virginia Community Hospital. They are very nice, and its a comfortable place, but I don't think its as well equipped. |
| Comments: |
I had a great experience at INOVA, from the patient valet parking to the oversized gurney in pre-op. Everyone I came in contact there was friendly and concerned, and knew what they were doing. This is my third stay there, and my granddaughter was born here, so I have a lot of experience there. They let my husband come and go as he pleased. (He says he gets the staff discount at the cafeteria.) They have a trauma unit, a cardiac unit, and a liver transplant facility, so they are pretty much prepared for any eventuality in surgery. It takes a little longer to get a date there because of all the emergency surgery they do, but well worth it. |

In other local hospitals that I have dealt with, I always had a private room and the nursing staff was quickly responsive and friendly. |
| Comments: |
The night nursing staff that I had was horrible, it would take them on an average of 2 hours to respond, if they responded at all and the X-Ray technologist who performed my leak test was brutal. I believe he ended up suspended for his treatment of me. When it came time for me to check out, the nurse never showed up to have me sign a release, nor was I given a wheelchair to leave. I had to walk out on my own. Personal impression of that place is that if you don't "Have" to go there....don't!!
The only good thing that I have to say about that hospital is that the daytime nursing staff was friendly and responsive. Thank God for them if one could survive the night in that place. |

On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this hospital a 5. |
| Comments: |
I had 3 decent nurses. My problem was the x-ray dept. and going through the leak test. It was poorly timed and the people in that dept. including the x-ray Dr. were very insensitive to me. I am a very independent person but to have to lift yourself by yourself from the gurney to the x-ray table 1 day after surgery was just awful. I will never go to this hospital again. Also the assistant Dr.s seemed to be rushing me out of the hospital. I was home in 2 days ahd only 2 liquid meals the whole time and this 2 day stay cost my insurance co. almost $16,000.00. What a rip-off. I was billed seperately for everything I guess that's how it is done. I also got billed for a liver biopsy and don't know why. That is still under investigation. Will update you on the outcome.
All in all this hospital needs some improving in the care dept. The admissions dept. was great. |

I work with all other area hospitals and find Fairfax to be far superior to the others in the area |

Everyone from the recepsonist when I first walked through the door, to the volunteer that wheeled me out was totally professional, caring and knowledgeable. |

Took forever to get me a the right size wheel chair. When I went to get my leak test, staff wanted me to crawl upon a table and lay flat as if I actually could. Needless to say, I didn't lay down and forced them to accomadate me. |

The Nurses were very unavailable. It is the patients responsibility to hound them to get out of bed. My Surgeon warned me to go to INOVA Fair Oaks but I wanted to stay closer to home. |

It would take the nurses 45 minutes to respond to my call, even when it was important. My drain was blocked and leaking for 4 days and no one would help. The dressing was never changed. When i had complications and needed to see a doctor, they said "No resident was on duty"...and at the time they had suspected me of having intestinal obstruction!! Overall, I had a terrible experience even though I went in very optomistic from what I had heard. YMMV |

I have been to INOVA Mount Vernon but only for outpatient services so I can't compare. |

Tje nursing staff was fine except for cleanliness my first day in the room. That day was terrible but a new person came in the next day and the place was very clean. My only complaint was that they had no time to help me walk. When my husband arrived back at the hospital the morning after surgery he helped me walk but NO ONE has time to help you with that. Be prepared. I would say it was average in everything. Some very professional nurses (a few not). Cleanliness was not consistent. Even the hallways desperately needed carpet cleaning on the 7th floor. |

I got very good care while I was there. I got a bed that was more accomadating to get out of.The bottom where your feet go would drop so when you stand up you can hold on to two handles at end of bed! |

I have had better experiences at other hospitals but this wasn't a horrible experience. |
| Comments: |
Private rooms in this hospital are few and far between. Plus they charge you to park and the food in the cafeteria is bad but since they charge you to park it is not worth really leaving the facility. The staff was very nice - I got stuck in traffic and almost missed my surgery time but they were very accomodating when I got there. I was wisked right into surgery. There was some cleanliness issues - bugs in the light fixtures in my bathroom and I had a horrible roommate - she couldn't hear and had her tv on full blast but luckily I was only in the hospital for 24 hours. |
