How Selected: Dr. Michael Schweitzer was the doctor that I chose.
Competitors: My hospital experience was beyond compare to any other that I was envolved with. From the moment that I arrived first rate care and attention was there for me.
Comments: I am thankful that I contacted admitting office in advance about my desire for a private room. My 'suite' was delightful and even included a sleep-sofa for my husband. The support staff were always available for questions or motivation. An interesting bi-product from my surgery was difficulty in deep breathing. Dr. Schweitzer ordered a CAT Scan of my lungs to rule out pneumonia. One of his residents noticed an irregularity in the lower edge which happened to be my upper right thigh. This tumor is five pounds and will be removed in a few months. This is the result from a special group of medical experts that I will be forever thankful. Adrienne

How Selected: Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center was the hospital used by my surgeon.
Competitors: The skill level doesn't even compare to the local hospitals in my immediate area. The level of expertise is ten-fold that of the hospitals on most of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Comments: The staff could not have been nicer. Every single one of them. They are understaffed as is every other hospital and that causes requests to be delayed at times, but not the urgent ones. The hospital was very clean and the staff caring. My only advice is if you can possibly afford one, get a private room. It may not even be an option because this hospital is in such demand that it remains full constantly. Great stay, great experience!

Competitors: Johns Hopkins is one of the best in the US.
Comments: My only complaint was about another patient down the hall who would constantly call for a nurse. This was vocally, not with the call button. He was annoying to patients and staff alike. The only thing the staff could do was keep his door closed to muffle his sound.

Competitors: The nursing staff was pretty disappointing- a few were ok, most were fair and several were truly awful!
Comments: Considering that it is Johns Hopkins, and most of the other staff were superb, it was very surprising that the nursing staff are so bad! One in particular, my first after the recovery room, had no idea how to operate my cpap and told me I didn't need it! I had to beg for it several times and then get it going myself... they were very inattentive, even the nice ones, and it was dirty!

Comments: The hospital was average. The nurses were over worked and assistants were very uncaring and not professional. At one point I was given a thermoter orally without a protector. How many other patients had their mouth on it??? That is just the tip of the iceburg.

Comments: The hospital staff was friendly, for the most part. I did have two nurses who were less than friendly during my stay. Rooms were not individual. I had a room mate and also the floor is not strictly for bariatric surgery like I thought. Besides that though, I thought the hospital was sufficient in all my needs.

Competitors: Teaching hospitals suck. As long as you get the skilled doctor and not the ones with the training wheels, it's great. But, you never get the skilled doctors, do you?

Comments: I couldn't have asked for a better hospital experience. Absolutely everyone was wonderful and so considerate. They were so comforting that I went into surgery with a calm feeling that I could never have imagined. I also asked for special considerations for my 7 year old son and they accomodated everything that I needed.

Competitors: The hospital care far exceeds other hospitals I know of.
Comments: I was very statisfied with the care I was given at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Each shift there was a nurse and a tech assigned to take care of me. I received excellent care. I had A physical therapist to show me how to best get out of bed and walk steps. An occupational therapist to help bath and get dressed. The nutritionest also came by to see me. A staff a doctors came by daily to check up on me (5 at one time). Good hospital and great care.

How Selected: This was the only hospital that my surgeon was at and he was highly recommended by co-workers.
Competitors: Havn't been in the hospital in 14 years and that was with the birth of my daughter. Different situation and at that time, my hospital stay was wonderful.
Comments: I was booked for surgery, they knew I was coming and didn't have a room for me so I was stuck in ICU for two days. It was a week before Christmas, the nurses station was outside my room, they had party after party after party all day and all night, food left and right, Chinese food brought in. They were loud and refused to pull the door shut. The nurses in general were very insensative to my needs.
