How Selected: No choice - All Kaiser No CA patients go to one of 3 hospitals and this was closest for me
Comments: My experience was 100% positive in all areas except noise. The noise was unbelievable as I was near the RN station. I heard talking 24/7. There is no regard for the fact that sick people are trying to rest. But as for the staff, they are all excellent and so caring. I wouldn't hesitate recommending this program to anyone.

How Selected: It was selected for my by my HMO, Kaiser.
Competitors: I have grown up working and volunteering in hospitals as my mom was a nurse. I've seen many and this one was small, but I have NEVER seen such great nurses and ancillary staff in action. It was great. I may hate the procedures of my HMO sometimes, but this hospital stay really was top notch and far above what I expected.
Comments: Kaiser Richmond has a small med-surg unit (30 beds or so), but from the time I went into pre-op and left from med-surg they were all great. I can't tell you how friendly the nursing staff was, because they have left me speechless. There was not a single insensitive nurse during my stay. I was incredibly well taken care of, they let my wife stay the night and she helped me so much. I hit my call light once because my IV went dry and the nurse was in there in less than 2 minutes. I just can't say enough great things and I would strongly, strongly enourage anyone in Northern Cal Kaiser to request Kaiser Richmond. Dr. Fisher, my surgeon, was top notch and has the best bedside manner of any surgeon I've met and better than most other internists I've interacted with. Great, great experience and I'll be sending the nursing staff a thank-you card because they were that great!!

Comments: The nurses in pre op were calming and friendly. The or staff didn't even tell me to count backwards I was out in seconds. In Recovery I woke up to alot of gas pain. Push the button like crazy. After leaving the recovery room it was all down hill. The room was small and hot. They were painting the hallways at 7pm which smelled great. The nurses and staff were rude and loud. No one was on the same sheet of music. My roommate almost smothered by a plastic pillow that some how covered her face. I spent the first hour sitting outside on the terrace. I just wanted the cath out. No one told me to walk and thank god no one woke me to walk...though how can you sleep with the am staff chatting about their weekend so loudly in the hall at 3 am. I finally put a note on the door requesting it to be closed. My surgeon Dr Fisher visited me and said I could leave when I was ready...after he left 3 nurses tried to give me the bums rush after I told them my husband was picking me up at a specific time.(I even asked if anyone was scheduled for the room I was in and they said no) And the rudest had to be an ICU nurse who came in and literally ripped the leg massage things off my legs and threw them in the garbage... right after my Dr. and I joked about me taking them home he said I could keep them (but not the machine) and then she was going to rip out my IV and I said no MY nurse was going to give me another bag of fluid...and this ICU nurse got really huffy and said ok I'll let you have the rest of this one (it was 1/4 full) as it emptied my nurse came in and have me a new bag. I had to go to the ER later in the week because of a high temp and the richmond ER very nice as well as the x ray/cat scan staff.

How Selected: It was pretty much selected for me. It is one of a couple places Kaiser does this surgery.
Competitors: It was better than other Kaiser hospital that I have been at.
Comments: These people are awesome. They are helpful, caring, compassionate right from the start. We live three hours from Richmond and know nothing of this town other than Kaiser so instead of making my husband travel all the way home and all the way back they provided me with a private room for him to stay with me. They are an extremely busy staff of nurses (gov't fault?!) so it took them a bit to answer call light but once my hubbie and I got the hang of unplugging things we were able to handle it. AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!!!!

How Selected: I was assigned this hospital by Kaiser.
Competitors: This is a very small hospital by local standards. I would not come back to this hospital based on my experience with untrained, uneducated staff.
Comments: The hospital nursing staff was a major problem for me. I had to leave after less than 24 hours because the level of care was just horrible. Unbelieveably bad experience.

Competitors: I have found almost all Kaiser Hospitals to be top quality (in my area anyway)
Comments: You have to know how to handle the Kaiser system. Sometimes it requires you being a little aggressive. I made sure that I had all my ducks in a row before going into the hospital. The only downside to my entire stay was the night nurse didn't want to help me walk (I was up and walking 1.5 hours after surgery) and when I got upset about this she wanted to preach her religion to me. Other wise everything was great.

Competitors: I personally have never stayed in a hospital prior to this surgery (except when I was born). Kaiser Richmond is a smaller hospital but they were very friendly, kind, and nice. Albeit it was older, it was very well kept up and attractive.
Comments: I thought that the hospital was great. The staff was great at night but daytime they had more things to do and more people awake to deal with so it took a bit longer to get what one needed.

How Selected: I have Kaiser as my HMO and this Hospital is the only one in the area close to me that performs the Gatsteric Bypass surgery.
Comments: Dr. Baggs and his staff were great! Surgery went like clock work, I was very impressed. However the Nursing staff on the ward were the worse I have every been exposed to. First off they were very short handed, they did not or could not respond to all the patients requests, the patient in the room next to me had called and called then as she was having problems, she was yelling for help, I ended up getting up and getting a nurse to come in to check on her. There was no personal care, nio compassion and definately NO communication between the nurses and the patients. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Something needs to be done there.

How Selected: The hospital sort of selected me. I really had no "choice" per se (at least I don't think I did). I was aproved for Richmond, and that was that. It was fine for me, because it was the closest Kaiser to my home and my family.
Competitors: Just as good as any other hospital. Having never had surgery myself, I can only compare what my father experienced with hospitals (he was in several) with my experience.
Comments: The surgical staff was fantastic. They mad you feel as comfortable as you could be, give that you are pretty nervous (at least I was). Except for one nurse that totally forgot I existed for about two hours, the rest of the staff was attentive and excellent.

Competitors: The Richmond facility was way better than the hospital I had my son in 9 years ago.
Comments: I just wanted to say that the facility was excellent, I even had a private room! The staff was also excellent, everybody was knowlegable, cheerful, and wonderful. The only problem I had was that they were dreadfully understaffed, so responce time was very slow. Otherwise, everything was fantastic!

How Selected: Kaiser is an HMO and this is the closest facility to where I live that does the surgery.
Competitors: I think Kaiser, Richmond is about the same as hospitals in the Sacramento area. It is an older facility that has been updated to meet the current needs.
Comments: I thought the staff treated me with respect and care. I was impressed with the lift team. They were excellent. I felt that even though there was a "full house" while I was there, I was given great care. The only thing I would have done differently is stayed one more day. I think they release you to soon.

Competitors: I feel Kaiser Richmond, as well as other Kaiser hospitals spare no expense in getting to the root of the problem, they never hesitate to order tests etc. They always seem to be at the forefront of any and all new developments involving the particular specialty they practice.
Comments: I am very impressed with Kaiser Richmond Hospital, I can't imagine getting better care at any facility anywhere. I feel very lucky that I had this top notch hosptial and staff. I want to add that each and every one of the staff from Drs, nurses housekeeping orderlies where some of the most pleasant people I have ever met! I felt honored to have my surgery and care at Richmond Kaiser.
