Comments: I had a great experience with the hospital and staff. Nurses were all friendly and sooo willing to help in any way they could. I wasn't doing too well and they made it very pleasant for me.

Competitors: Although this hospital is older, I found the staff and accomodations excellent. It is small also which makes it easier to navigate.
Comments: All staff I came in contact with were excellent. Very timely. If I needed a nurse they were right there and all were friendly. I also knew that nights could get noisy so I closed my door and put in ear plugs so I could rest. I have no complaints about Kaiser SSF. I received excellent care during my stay.

How Selected: I was assigned to it per my HMO.
Comments: VERY noisy and rooms, while private, are tiny - so much so that you can't really shut the door because the bed is in the way. Some of the nurses were amazing, a couple of them were very rough-handed and almost dismissive in their treatment. They did NOT have good communication with me at all! I didn't know about the $200 a day room payment until I was being admitted for surgery, they did not communicate well with family members after my surgery to tell them how I was, and they were VERY unprofessional and callous about "kicking me out" to go home: I was originally told I would have to sit in the lobby for several hours, even though my family members were nearly 2 hours away in Sacramento and I didn't know when they could come get me. It wasn't until I was in tears that another nurse came to assure me that I was *not* being summarily kicked out and that I could sit there until my boyfriend came to get me. My boyfriend is *very* unhappy with their discharge care.

How Selected: Chosen by Kaiser due to my location.
Competitors: It's awesome. I have been to UCSF and SF General, and the care I got at Kaiser was so much better, as the staff was so nice and friendly. They made me feel right at home.
Comments: The nursing staff were just wonderful! Very caring and kind, and positive. I couldn't have hada better experience. They responded immediately when I rang my call button, and made sure I had everything I needed. All rooms were small, but private. I had a woman with alzheimer's across the hall from me, and she kept me awake until I got smart and had a nurse close my door. It was nice and quiet with my door closed. I was able to get up and walking pretty quickly, and was allowed to do laps around the nursing area. They were prompt with releasing me. They told me I would be discharged around 3 PM, but I got out of there around 2:30 PM, which was nice.

Competitors: I have been a member with Kaiser for 8 years.
Comments: This Hospital is OK the only NEG is that it is very noisy gastric Bypass patients are placed in what seems to be a mixed ward, I had to listen to a dementia patient scream all night (good thing that the meds help you relax!)

How Selected: I live around the corner, and this hospital besides going to San Diego is the only one that does the surgery, COURSE I chose the one around the corner!
Competitors: I dont know about other hospitals, I DO know that it has been a year since my surgery and I have read some pretty awful stories, so I wanted to let anyone know, that is planning to have the surgery... THIS is a excellent place to be, and you will be treated very well
Comments: Again, after a year I wanted to help anyone thinking of having the surgery, it is the best program, Nadia and Gitte are the best and YOU are the one that will make it work, the surgery is a TOOL, not gonig to make your weight problem go away, just HELP you. You must remember to WORK the program, and you will be GREAT!!

At 300 pounds they said I was not big enough for the special bariatric bed, so I suffered agony getting in and out of bed. The bariatric wheelchairs are HUGE, but they have no foot rests so I had to hold my feet up- not easy with 34 staples!!

Competitors: I am think the care here is excellent in comparision to the Kaiser hospital in Santa Clara where my husband had some surgery done. He was there for 7 days and the treatment from the staff was much different
Comments: the staff in the hospital are wonderful. They are very caring people. They ahve there a group called the Lift team. They are the young men that help you get out of bed and walk right after surgery. They are so wonderful. They reall make you feel that you are being well cared for. If they haven't had you request them in a while they come and look for you and check to see that you have been doing your walking.

How Selected: Kaiser is my HMO, not much choice. Also, it is the only one in my HMO that was providing the surgery for n. cal other then San Diego.
Competitors: I have been with Kaiser most of my life. This hospital compared to my local ones - it is older and could use a face-lift, but I was satisfied.
Comments: I think this hospital could have used newer and cleaner amenities-chairs for visitors, more often cleaning, better equipment (walkers etc.). However, all in all, I was satisfied.

Comments: My pain control was inadequate for 24 hours. I did not see my surgeon for 2 full days after surgery. Response time was very slow. My room was not cleaned in the four days I was hospitalized, and the room smelled of decay on that fourth day. I was never assisted in cleaning myself, so my husband gave me a shower before taking me home the last day.

How Selected: I had Kaiser coverage through my previous employer, so I decided to continue with the plan after I became disabled. The South San Francisco facility is the only Kaiser hospital performing the surgery in Northern California.
Competitors: I actually don't know. I've only belonged to Kaiser and UC at Davis Medical Center, and had fair experiences at both places.
Comments: Kaiser is an HMO, so sometimes they can seem remote and frustrating to consumers. But once I was approved for surgery, everything moved very quickly and smoothly.

Comments: The Bariatric Program at Kaiser is a mixed bag. In the preliminary stages, there is a lot of misinformation and sometimes no information as to your status once you have been approved for surgery. Each patient is handled a little differenty and sometimes there can be conflicting information. However, once you have met the surgeon and had the surgery, the care is excellent. People are treated with respect on the ward and the nurses and assistants are extremely helpful and caring. I loved my surgeon and had complete confidence in him after our first meeting.
