Competitors: I've stayed at Swedish Hospital (Seattle) and Steven's Hospital (Edmonds) in the past and the stay at Kennewick was as comfortable as stays at either of those "big city" locations.
Comments: Helpful and (mostly) friendly nursing staff were always available when I needed them and usually before. I appreciate that they took the time to do things like write the date on a white board and crack a joke from time to time. Most importantly, they didn't kick the foley too terribly often (ZAP!). There were a couple of brief instances where it was clear that communication between staff had suffered a bit, but, without fail, the staff ably tended to my recovery and comfort.

Comments: I have been an R.N. for almost 30 years and have worked in about 7 different hospitals. I've also been a patient 3 other times. The staff at KGH gave me excellent care from beginning to end. I felt safe and well cared for the whole time. They have inspired me to make sure my patients where I work, feel as safe and cared for under my care.

How Selected: This is the only hospital Dr. Heap does surgery in.
Competitors: I dont really know anything about any other local hospitals, but if I had to compare to other hospitals I have stayed in this hospital is much better. They gave me more personal one on one time than any hospital I have ever been in. My NA was a man and he really made sure he dodded over me and did his best to make sure I was comfortable. Not to mention when it was time for my sponge bath, he wasnt afraid to touch me and I felt squeaky clean afterwards.
Comments: I only have one sort of negative comment about my stay... There was a nurse there who thought I should try and ween myself off of the pain meds two days out. Ugh! I wanted to wring her neck. LOL Fortunatly, Doc, gives his cell phone number to his patients and I called him up and told on her. LOL Of course Doc took care of it and I was on my way to less pain in about five minutes. Other than that one nurse at that one time everything was wonderful. Thank you all you wonderful people=)

Comments: Connie, a hed-head, RN not friendly, left you uncovered for ages, never said a kind word, and always was telling you of all the patients that she had to deal with, and you weren't the only one after all!!! Some staff grew on you because you had them for your entire stay, like Nancy, however, she had no knowledge of the power beds and hurt me quite a lot. I was very happy to only have had Connie one night only.

Competitors: I have had many experiences with hospital stays and sugery, and I can honestly say that I had the worst care ever. I had no hygiene care the whole time I was in ICU [3 days], my mom was with me and asked them about it and they responded that " when she can get up and stand by the bed we will get her a basin. Has no clean sheets twice in 5 days. If your'e gonna go here I would be ready to battle for your needs to be met.

How Selected: It is the only hospital this surgeon uses for bariactric surgery.
Competitors: Generally good, except when it comes to the obese.
Comments: I think Kennewick General is so worried about malpractice insurance costs, that they lost sight of their mission to treat all patients with the best care available. I was told the only insurance they chose to refuse to subsidize was the one for bariactric surgery. It sounds like discrimination against people with obesity to me.

How Selected: Kennewick General is Dr. Heap's Hospital of choice. And it is a good one.
Competitors: I don't know of any others in the Tri Cities. But I do work at one in Yakima and know the other hospital here in town. Kennewick General is a smaller hospital but a very good one. Good staff, good care. What more could you ask for.
Comments: I really enjoyed getting to know the staff at Kennewick General they are wonderful people and very friendly. This coming from an obese person is quite a complement they made me feel good about myself. And joked and encouraged me everyday. What a wonderful group of people.

Comments: Crowded, dirty, noisy, the nurses were smelly and unkept. One nurse had such bad breath I thought I would die. When you have just had surgery you feel kind of queesy anyway. He smelled like he just ate a bowl of fried onions. Ugh. The staff did not believe me when I told them my pain pump was not working. Finally, someone looked at it and sure enough it wasn't working. I was in excrutiating pain for what seemed like forever until they got that under control. My sister heard the staff make a comment about my size and weight when they were lifting me from the gurney onto the bed after my surgery. I was so out of it, I didn't hear it but she did and it upset her very much. The next day they brought a tiny little wheelchair to take me to get a cat scan. I couldn't get my butt in it and they had to search all over for a larger wheelchair. How humiliating. Thank God I am now 110 pounds lighter and don't have to deal with that kind of discrimination. I hope never to have the misfortune to wind up in Kennewick General Hospital again.

How Selected: The hospital was selected by my surgeons since they both have privilages these.
Competitors: I was completely impressed. We mostly have small, local hospitals in this area that are known for being pretty "cheesy". KGH was anything but that - very professional.
Comments: I was very pleased with my stay at KGH. The ICU nurses were extremely concerned and attentive, and always respectful. The floor nurses and aids I had were also very kind, attended to my needs, and made sure my pain was under control.

How Selected: It was the hospital in which my surgeon does his surgery!
Competitors: Oh by FAR it was VERY good. There wasn't a commotion of activity that distracts so many people. It wasn't that terrible "whitewall" that makes you feel like you are marching to your doom (it was pinkish). It was spacious and very well kept. The staff was courteous and helpful. They never seemed so overloaded with patients or emergencies that they couldn't help you.
Comments: I would go there for any surgery. The preop preparation nurses were fantastic. The anesthesiologists were wonderful. The nursing staff was very concerned and caring (and spunky!). I had a private room (they had a lot of them) and they didn't balk when my friend and girlfriend wanted to stay with me late into the night. Excellent, Excellent experience!

How Selected: This is the hospital that Dr. Heap uses.
Competitors: Unsure of what others offer.
Comments: I had very good experiences in the ICU, but when put in a semi-private room, I felt like all staff disappeared. My husband couldn't find nurses for ice chips or even an extra pillow when I was coughing. Otherwise, all seemed to go well for the stay. Billing looks like it will be an issue. They did not do as asked with the billing. I had gall-bladder removal and needed split billing for the part that I wasn't paying cash for, but it slipped thru and was sent in full to insurance. I am awaiting my denial now, as my insurance doesn't pay for WLS. Also, I was in ICU out of convenience for lack of open rooms in the hospital, and had to ask them to adjust the charges for that. They did.
