How Selected: Because my mother had surgical day care there a few years ago and in general, the nursing staff is said to be the best in the area
Comments: ....I guess that only counts if you are NOT in the ICU. I was treated miserably except by ONE nurse, who thank God took me as her own for days 2 and 3, but as soon as she left at 3pm my life was back to miserable. I was literally yelled at when I asked for pain meds, told that a lack of IV 'good spot' was my fault, given a room with a woman with dementia, who when not undressing to show the world, was yelling. Except for the 2 hours in recovery, I slept in 5 minute intervals in 36 hours. Then I started yelling at her and staff at 4am on the 2nd and the woman was moved to a solo room. Which had been EMPTY all along. At one point I was having horrible regurgitation, asked for help and was told to relax and be quiet. I then overheard this nurse telling another staffer to not worry about me since I wasn't in pain, I was having an anxiety attack. Then my surgeon came in and he was able to take care alot of the immediate problems, but in general the staff was in my honest opinion, cruel. I would not recommend anyone going there who might need ICU care, such as those with HBP, as I do.

How Selected: Dr. Randall only does surgery there. Dr. Randall is great but not the hospital.
Competitors: Poor. my pain meds were always late, once upward 2hrs.
Comments: The place was dim looking, my mom said there was dust bunnies under the bed. But my biggest complaint is about the nurses. Very very poor.

Competitors: I would rate it the same. Except with regards to pre-op testing--This hospital was great-no long waits at any of the departments I had to go to.

Competitors: I've never been in a hospital before, but from family experiences it seems this ranked very good.
Comments: Excellent staff. It seems they have a goal of pleasing every patient and always asking "Is there anything else I can get for you?" They see WLS patients daily so the were well equipped to handle questions/situations if they were to araise.

How Selected: My surgeons office was located there.
Competitors: Pretty good
Comments: Hospital stay was good. During change in shifts call bell responses were slower. Very clean hospital, I never had to ask for water. As it was constantly being filled. All medical staff was pleasant, more staff was present during the day shift. The hospital had hired rehab aides for day shift specifically for gastric by pass patients in addition to regular day staff.

How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon is affiliated with, but I had heard good things about the hospital and spoke with area nurses and felt very good about Law-Mem.
Competitors: WAY BETTER than other hospitals, such as Melrose-Wakefield and WAY MORE FRIENDLY environment than metro hospitals, such as Mass. General, etc.
Comments: Lawrence-Memorial has a very caring and understanding staff, particularly in the Gastric Bypass Center. The staff is focused and considerate as well as highly trained and compassionate. And this is not just the doctors and nurses -- this includes the person who brought my food tray and also the wonderful lady who swept and mopped my room every day and emptied the trash cans. I was very impressed!

Competitors: i dont know, never been anywhere else.
Comments: the hardest time to get needed attention is during shift changes, in the evenings and the mornings. they are obviously short staffed. you are awoken so many times during the nite.

How Selected: Dr. affiliation.
Competitors: I would say that they're about a 6 on a scale of 1-10.
Comments: While there were a couple of nurses and other staff (physical therapy, dieticians) that were really nice and would help when needed, there were far more staff members who didn't seem all that interested. Most of the assisting staff doesn't speak english, so communication was difficult. I had been warned of this problem by other people who had their surgery at Lawrence Memorial, so it wasn't a complete surprise.

How Selected: Dr. Gee performs plastic surgery at 3 hospitals in the area. My choice was primarily based on cost, and quickness in scheduling surgery.
Competitors: Mt. Auburn is tops on my list, followed by Newton-Wellesley. Lawrence Memorial is not in their league.
Comments: The day of surgery after I was moved to my room, the staff were very much non-existant. Response time to pressing the nurse call button was greater than 20 minutes, getting a glass of water took almost 2 hours. I was not given a spyrometer and shown how to deep breathe, or practice coughing... however having had previous surgeries, I was able to do this on my own. After the catheter was removed, they did not check my fluid output in the bathroom, nor did they check to see if I had voided at all. The highlight of my stay was Narika, a student nurse. She was with me all day on Saturday. She helped me get up and walk, brushed my hair, and made sure that I had everything I needed almost instantly. Had the entire stay been like this, it would have equaled the care I received at Mt. Auburn when I had my bypass. All in all, I would consider this to be an "average" hospital. Sadly, I've had to stay in worse.

How Selected: Dr Randall selected the hospital, but rest assured, after my surgery, there were some drastic changes, as he moved his office into the office. I believed, he selected he own staff, and trained them as well.
Competitors: The hospital is a good hospital, which was in the process of being taken over by asnother company. so there were changes, but Dr. Randall took care of that quickly
Comments: I believe, things are well in hand NOW....Dr Randall is a fantastic person, and I hope to see him during the holidays this year 2002 I have lost my weight, and feel and look and great, infact, I doubt if he will recognize me
