How Selected: LVH is a Bariatric Center of Excellence connected to a well-established Weight Management Program.
Competitors: LVH is generally ranked better than surrounding hospitals, especially as a Center of Excellence (26 in the country).
Comments: Overall, I received good care at LVH. The staff were responsive to my needs for pain medication and to multiple requests to move into different positions or receive help for tasks. The nurses were generally pleasant and professional, but not warm; one in particular seemed very unfamiliar with weight loss surgery and with the level of my physical discomfort. I was surprised that it did not seem as "specialized" for WLS patients as I had anticipated. My biggest complaint was the bed- it was horribly uncomfortable on my back and I got very little rest, as the chairs were not much better. In general, I believe I received competent care at LVH. *These statements are reflections of my own personal impressions of LVH. I make no claims as to what others may experience.*

How Selected: Closest to my house and where my surgeon of choice does his work.
Competitors: I know it has all kinds of awards and is supposed to be one of the better in this area but i could have been a lot happier.
Comments: There was a few times where I was concerned because one of my machines was beeping and no one came for quite a few minutes. It took the discharge order nearly 6 hours to come through. There was construction going on the floor above and my roommate was a nightmare. I know it all sounds horrible but overall the nurses were nice and best of all my surgery went perfectly so I can't complain too much ;)

How Selected: My family doctor referred me to the Dr. Boorse, the surgeon. His office is at the hospital. Lehigh Valley hospital is also a trauma center.
Competitors: I would compare this hospital to Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN. I have spent overnight there also. Lehigh Valley quickly accommodates the doctors orders. ie. On the 3rd day post op, I had vertigo. I could not get out of bed. The doctor ordered a lund scan to be sure I was not getting a blood clot. It was done within 2 hrs. of the doctor seeing me.
Comments: Every one I came in contact with was a caring individual. From the cleaning staff to the professional staff. There was a time I was incontinent. (Embarrassing for me) Not a look of distain from the staff. They just took it in stride to help me.

Comments: One hospital is about the same as any other. I did not get any rest the first night because the nurses were loud, the lights were bright, and I had a tech checking my catheter every 15 minutes to make sure it was draining. If one is looking for rest in the hopsital then one is looking in the wrong place.

How Selected: The surgeon works out of this hospital.
Competitors: The only part that I didn't like was that some of the staff was not as nice about helping with basic things such as helping in the bathroom and that stuff as other were. Also, some of the staff were loud early in the morning which interrupted my sleep.
Comments: The hospital was very clean and did a very good job at making sure that I had what I needed and that when things weren't right, that they corrected them in a quick amount of time.

How Selected: I have had surgery in this hospital prior to my RNY, so I was familiar with the hospital and care given.
Competitors: Can't really compare as I have not been to any other hospitals in the area.
Comments: In the OR, it was pretty uncomfortable when they were prepping me for surgery as things were a bit disorganized and people were scurrying around. Eventually, though, I was under and the RNY was done with little problems, except for some mechanical issues that happened but were resoloved. The hospital stay was okay, except that the cleaniness of the room and bathroom was lacking. The sheets and bedding were not changed while I was there, as I would have expected it to be and the bathroom was not cleaned. Overall, my experience was good and nurses were very nice. My doctor was wondeful and very caring as well.

How Selected: Where the surgeon does his work
Competitors: It is the best in the area.
Comments: The staff was pleasant but mostly inaccessible. The day of surgery they were very helpful, after that, scarce. My room was in close proximity to where the staff always hung out to gossip, and that was a bit of a problem, I was in no mood to hear the female nursing staff flirting with the male staff and all the inter-office chatter. Funny how you could hear them just outside the room, but as soon as you rang for one of them it took some time to arrive. All in all, good care. How good CAN hospital stays be ???

How Selected: My surgeon is on the staff and this is the ONLY hospital that he operates out of.
Competitors: Same as the others. I've been in St. Lukes, Bethlehem and Muhlenburg, and Easton and Warren Hosp of NJ. The stays are all the same.
Comments: In general they were kind. A little slow at responding to the call buttons, but in general they were ok. I was disappointed that I didn't receive a care package with the necessary toiletries and I had to ask for bath towels and wash clothes. These weren't provided. So that was annoying. If it weren't for my family, they were the ones that helped me bathe and get me ice chips. So my review of LVH is that they are ok. Nothing to write home about.

Competitors: I guess it is about the same as most hospitals though my stay at Lehigh Valley hospital on 17th St. in Allentown was a much better experience. The nurses there were fabulous and the care incredible. Of course I was there to have a baby so maybe they are just a happier group of people.
Comments: I did not have a good stay at this hospital at all. The people I met before surgery and in recovery were great. The nurses and others that I met when I first got to my room and during the night were great too. The nurses and others on my second day were pretty darn dreadful. I was pretty much ignored. I still had diarrhea from the bowel prep I had taken. When I had a small accident because I could get out of bed fast enough the woman who came in(not sure if she was a nurse) just looked at me and threw a new gown and one of those bed pads on the bed and then walked out. No offer to help me to the bathroom and I had to change my bed pad myself. I was not helped out of bed to walk the halls... not even once. The one nurse(a male) told me I could not ve discharged until I urinated. Unfortunately everytime I went to the bathroom so diarhhea got in the little cup thing and he actually almost yelled at me. He said "Look, I can't tell if you urinated or not you have to be more careful when you go!" Yes, he said it like he was yelling at a child. I have to go to the same hospital for my upcoming plastic surgery and I am not looking forward to it at all. Just those 10 or so hours during the second day tainted my whole view of the hospital. A patient should never be treated like that no matter how busy or overworked the staff is.

Competitors: The nursing care (for me personally, one-on-one)was EXCELLENT! The hospital is clean, modern, fairly progressive.
Comments: The hospital does not offer any pre-op or post-op program. The dietary dept. seems clueless on the post-op diet. I overheard the nurses talking about gastric bypass patients being "demanding" ... perhaps because there is no structured care program before, during, or after. There was not a comfortable place to sit outside of the room that had a chair large enough to accomodate most patients.
