Lenox Hill is an older hospital without any new modifications to "creature comforts". If I didnt know any better, I would think i was in a hospital room circa 1978 instead of circa 2008 |
| Comments: |
On a whole, my stay was satisfactory. I was not impressed, but not dissapointed. Here are a few CONS that I did experience (take them as you wish) 1) Since this is UES Manhattan, there is no designated parking lot & parking on the street is almost impossible, so all my visitors had to pay a minimum of $35/5 hrs to park in a garage. 2) After surgery I was in the recovery area for over 5 HOURS waiting for a bed to become available & then due to shift change I was left an add'l 2 1/2 HOURS in the same recovery room...the entire 7.5 HOURS WITHOUT any visitors..and I asked multiple times to see my parents & husband. 3) During day one I was confirmed that there were no leaks & the cathetar was removed & was told that I would have to urinate by 8pm or they would put the cathetar back in by the next day. I urinated a small amt at 6pm & at 7:30pm, but the nurse on duty did not record either. Beginning at 11pm and every hour after I was woken up & threated by every nurse & resident on duty that if I did not urinate I would have the catetar re-inserted by 6am. It was annoying & intimidating. Finally the day nurse arrived and confirmed that I did urinate when I said I did. |

It was very clean and had a positive attitude towards the patients, you never felt awkward for being overweight. |
| Comments: |
The night staff was slow to respond to requests and a times abrupt.I was not allowed to walk right after surgery as i was told i had to ,i felt this was risky and maybe even negligent considering they want you to avoid blood clots.I have a herniated disc in my back an i asked for a pillow to cushion myself as i was lying on that bad back for 12 hours.I never received it.I asked 3 different nurses! The tvs worked with headphones only and for 13 bux a day those headphones should be readily available.3 hours later i got it.When they took my iv out it Bleed ALOT it was gushing, the nurse told me to hold on to the bandaid and apply pressure and she would come clean it and re-bandage it.She NEVER came back .A surgical assistant happened by to check up on my incision wounds and SHE fixed it.The daytime nurses were very sweet and attentive and more on the ball.I loved the RN on days- Moira was the best. She seemed to really care and was very resourceful.Overall it was a pleasant exeperience - i just wish i had more of a mouth when i needed something,i did not want to make them mad by constantly asking for things- but was mad myself when i didnt get them. |

The staff was so wonderful, even over a holiday (Thanksgiving). I felt well taken care of, was given a nutrition seminar during my stay, and they managed all my needs with skill and care. When I had a rough moment during a painful walk, they took care of me and helped me through it. Anyone due to spend time in this hospital should go in knowing that they will be well cared for. |

If you are in for a same day surgery this is a great hospital, the staff in the surgery department are supper good and caring. I recomend this to anyone. But as far as to stay there for a few days my experience with the nursing staff and the administration was HELL..I can go as far as to say negligent and unsafe. |

From what I have heard the nurses are more attentive elsewhere. My foley bag almost backed up overnight because no one changed it. |
| Comments: |
Overall the only good experience I had with this hospital was once I was in my room. The nurses were very nice. The pre-op system here was very impersonal and factory-like and the nurses did NOTHING to try and make me feel better and lied about paging my doctor and his PA to get me a shot of Valium he had promised me pre-op to keep me calm. They almost went out of their way to be as cold as possible. I was separated from my family almost immediately and sat by myself for an hour before a nurse let them back in, and most of the time I was sitting by myself. The PA assigned to me didn't even TRY to get a vein to get my blood and said she wasn't comfortable doing it. She was honestly very incompetent and the one who lied about paging my surgeon. My anesthesiologist was not very nice and he didn't care about what I had to say about any of my concerns. I swear they put me under way before my surgery started to shut me up. The OR people ignored me and the nurse they sent for me was maybe like 18 years old and he also ignored me. The recovery room was a nightmare. I was in pain and everyone was ignoring me until one nurse told me she was MY nurse. They all had insane attitudes and big power trips going on, and they ignored me when I was telling them I was in pain! They let my mother into recovery for literally 2 minutes and kicked her out. I sat in recovery for 5 hours because I demanded a pain pump and that whole process added 2 hours to the recovery experienced. I finally got to my room and it was steaming hot. I had read to bring a fan so I was prepared. All seemed to be well and then at 4:30 am I got a neighbor and they brought her in like the end of the world was coming. They had NO regard for the fact there was another patient laying there and did NOTHING to minimize the amount of commotion or chaos. I disconnected my vital equipment and no one came ot reconnect it all night. The alarms from the IV never ended and every time they pumped me full of drugs to sleep I was awakened by an alarm. The nurses on the floor were great, but pre-op and post-op I would NOT recommend this hospital for the surgery experience. Everyone had an attitude and no one wanted to be bothered. I've seen other peoples' surgical experiences and I can tell you it didn't have to be this way.
Oh, if you go here and want a private duty nurse, which I consider to be the most invaluable thing to have, request Kathy Edwards. She was a doll and made my stay quite pleasant. |

| This is the hospital my surgeon works out of. It was however part of the reason I was confortable chosing her. Lenox Hill has a great reputation and came recommended by a friend whose husband owned a hosptial and is a retired cardiologist. He actually had open-heart at Lenox Hill. |
| Competitors: |
I have only been at one other hospital, NYH of Queens (Booth Memorial). I had my 2 kids there because my uncle is the administrator of OBGYN & PEDS. Because of that I got good treatment but also found shortcomings. I would say Lenox Hills staff is comparable. There are great staff members and there are horrible staff members. The accomodations were slightly nicer at NYHQ but it was a brand new unit. But I would say Lenox was as nice as I expected although the rooms were inconveniently configured and hard to use and get around. |
| Comments: |
Overal I had a good enough experience. As with ANY hospital it doesnt matter how good it is you still want to go home and FAST. As I said there were some staff members I thank with all my heart and others I think should leave the health care field and not be allowed to communicate with the public. I always find that kill them with kindness is the best way to go. Sweet as sugar and manners to the extreme make it hard for people to not want to make some effort to help you out. My problems occured with the residents/interns and the nurses failing to communicate effectively. The one who suffered was me due to a lack of proper pain management to which I credit my extra day in the hospital. |

I found everyone to be exceptionally caring and professional. Response time was above average. Even when I wanted to go home early but my pressure was too high they were reasonable and talked some sense into me. Overall a very positive experience. Pain medication administered fast and as needed. Proceedures were administered competently (altough one nurse couldn't find a vein even though a needle was in my arm for two minutes). The nurses were very nice and had an excellent sense of humor. Provided positive feedback. |

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this one an 7/8. |
| Comments: |
This was a very nice hospital, however, I have 3 minor complaints about it.
1 - they require you to be there 2 1/2 hours pre-op and it seems to me that 1 hour would be more than enough time to have you sitting around waiting for surgery. The pre-op questions took about 30 minutes, then you just waited.
2 - While in the pre-op waiting room, the drs, nurses come in to discuss your procedure and there isn't much privacy. There were other people in this room that I didn't necessarily want to know what type of surgery I was having.
3 - The surgial resident didn't have much compassion or patience with questions post surgery - in fact he was somewhat of a jerk who blew off concerns that the nurses had regarding some nausea I was having - made me feel pretty bad. Other than that, the staff was excellent - very nice. |

My only problem was sleeping. I brought ear plugs and a face mask to sleep. My only complaint was it was very hot in the hospital and I wish I had a fan. The staff was great and I actually felt overly cared for! |

The other only hospital that I have been to is Mt. Sinai Hospital and that hospital was great also. I believe is because I don't become a pain in the ass. When I had my son in Mt. Sinai by c-section I got out of bed right away, as soon as they told me the following day.... and I would go and get what ever I needed and I always said thank you, sorry, and please. I said sorry because they have other patients that really wanted to be treateted like babies and I felt I was adding to their stress. At Lenox Hill the nurses and staff were great, they were sorprised when I got out of bed the same day of my surgery. |

My girls Sabrina, Thea, Elvira, and Rudy (male nurse) where great. I had other males nurses but I was so druged the first day that I don't remember their name but they were great too. The hospital is really clean and renovated everything is new. My problem was that my roommate was a senior lady that had more visitors in one day than the mayor. They were loud and to top it off had their tv full blast, their cellphones were ringing of the hook and to make it worst the hospital only admits children 12 and over, so I was not able to see my son or have my only 2 family members visit me because they both children under 7. They need to review their policy. And trust me people will recognize you, this lady had surgery the same day I did and I saw in the hallway and she hey I know you I saw your profile online and that was great I felt almost famous. I went into her room and chatted for a few and she went to my room to say good-bye. Thank You OH!!! |

I think the experience was very different being in a "N.Y. City Hospital". My experience wasn't great but it was my choice. |
| Comments: |
I was in the emergency room days after my surgery for what turned out to be a stomach virus (of all things, after lapband surgery!!) The area was dirty and very crowded/I thought since I was just recently in that hospital for surgery I would of had quicker treatment but we arrived at 11:30am and we were put in a room that evening after midnight so it was a long stay in the E.R!! |

I had a better experience at NY Hospital in terms of after care and nursing staff. |

The facilities were great compare to hospitals I have visited. This was the first time I stayed in a hospital. My parents thought it was well kept and clean |

I don't know of any other hospitals in NYC. I have lived in Colorado for the past 10 years and just got back to NY in 2002. |
| Comments: |
I was very surprised that they were not set up for overweight patients. I thought they would be. since they have such a large Bariatric Surgery practice there. The pain meds were horrible, and made my first night a nightmare. And you really want to be able to sit in a comfortable chair, not squeeze yourself in on. I wound up sitting in a regular no arm chair, but mostly stayed in bed! |

only bad thing i have to say about the hospital is that the rooms are small and the a/c is not cold enough, if you have a small fan, bring it. aside from that, i was very pleased with my stay there. |

Hospital is in the middle of modernizing, and if your room is in the older section it will be small and rather worn out. |
| Comments: |
Staff is very busy. While they are very competent and nice, they don't spend extra time at your bedside. Do not hesitate to ask for anything you want/need. If you want to see a RN then ring for one, as they come to your room only when you have scheduled medications or procedures. |

I found Lenox Hill to be very good. The nursing staff was very responsive most of the time, especially when I first few days after surgery. |
| Comments: |
From the moment I walked into Lenox Hill till I walked out, Lenox Hill was very patient oriented. They were expecting me (my biggest fear was they hadn't registered me) and my wait to the OR was minimal. I think I was maybe left alone at one point, 10 minutes right before the walk to the OR. |
