How Selected: Referral from PCP; ranked highly in this surgery; Women's Hospital, so would have a different approach to medicine; clean, modern facilities
Competitors: This is one of the best local hospitals!
Comments: I have nothing but excellent things to say about the services, staff, and hospital facilities. The only downside is the parking situation. I think it's terrible that they charge to park for appointments and visiting. It was roughly $18 a day for my visitors to park when they spent a significant amount of time with me. The rates start at $3 for an hour and go up from there, which can get pricey when you are there for multiple appointments.

Competitors: i think that. i would not of chosen my local even if it was on the list. this hospital was actually better than my local hospital
Comments: the hospital was very clean and friendly envirorment. But the nurses were a little slow getting pain meds or if you need help getting up. But the head nurse Ellen was great, she adress the proplems with the nursing staff. i would recomand this hospital.

Competitors: Comparable. Convenient for me.
Comments: I haven't had my WLS yet and this is a review of the time I spent at Magee for the birth of my son. The hospital was like any other. I really didn't see the nurses other than to be administered medication. The physician was great (obviously, or I would not have chosen him) and the supporting staff (i.e., in surgery) was very mechanical, as well as professional.

How Selected: I was referred to this hospital by my PCP
Competitors: I think is a good hospital, vbery equipped with the latest technology, and excellent doctors
Comments: I was a little taken aback by the lack of care from the nurses and aides. My mother and sister were there, and helped me a lot, and we had trouble getting the nurse, and getting my pain meds on time..whenever you are told that "the nurse is charting and she will bring you your pain meds when she is done" and you get them an hour later...well thats a problem. I dont' think charting should be more important than a patients needs.

Competitors: The UPMC system is generally very excellent, and if you are dealing with a specialized problem, this is where you want to be!
Comments: The only complaint I have is that the poor nurses are so overwhelmed with work, that it takes them a long time to answer your requests after you push the call bell. Thank goodness I really didn't have any emergencies. I do have to say, though, that they were so attentive post operatively.

How Selected: UPMC is a hospital of excellence for bariatric surgery. Dr. Raftopolous is an excellent surgeon and made frequent follow ups, including phone calls after surgery.
Competitors: The staff were great when my family was in the room, insisting that my needs were met. However, if my family was asleep, in the lounge, or cafeteria the level of care was decreased.
Comments: Dr. Raftopolous was excellent and I would recommend him as a surgeon. However, if you want the best possible care, your family must be present to advocate for blankets, pillows, medications, walks, bathing, and assistance with comfort.

Competitors: The entire experience with Magee was wonderful. I have only had experience with hospitals concerning my husband...however, the other hospitals are quite good also.
Comments: I can't say enough nice things about them. Their staff of nurses was excellent, very giving and caring. Very attentive to my every need. My husband was allowed to stay in my room with me overnight...and that made my stay there bearable for him. He had been really anxious about my surgery. When we were told he could stay, it was great. He was so relieved.

How Selected: I felt that UPMC is an incredible hospital, for all women's needs. I didnt hessitate to choose to go there.
Competitors: Compared to the local hospitals, it is fantastic. Our local hospitals are growing and becoming more and more advanced, but their bariatric departments aren't at all developed enough for me.
Comments: I felt it was a great place. My MAIN complaint was that almost the entire staff thought I had Bypass surgery. They were doing everything as if I were a Bypass patient, and that was very frustrating. I felt like less of a patient becasue, "Oh you only had the band" was said to me a lot, once people knew what I had done. I've also had that said to me for return visits. Hearing, after driving 2 hours to get there, "oh band patients dont get follow ups," or "why did they even have you come?" That has been very frustrating. I dont hold it against ANY of them, because banding is so rare there, most people assume a Bypass was done. Was a GREAT hospital...and great people.. just not good communication I guess. Would do it again in an instant!

How Selected: I had been to Magee on time prior and I thought it was a beautiful hospital. I met a previous bariatric patient and she told me she had a wonderful stay with Magee and I went with them.
Competitors: I could have had my surgery here about 5 minutes from my house but I chose Magee, which is about 45 minutes away. They have a good reputation and I felt very comfortable with their staff.
Comments: Overall everything was wonderful. The only issue I had was with a recovery nurse who was very rude to me. The bariatrics unit has specialized nurses and their own special patient area. It was wonderful! The nurses were friendly and fun and the stay was awesome. I had my own private room and the only complaint that I may have had that was at times some of the employees were a little loud and disturbed me but nothing major.

Comments: poor response in getting help. you have to call dietary for your meals and I was told I was "not in the sytem" and then had to call the nursing station and go through the whole process of getting them to put me into the computer system and then I had to call dietary back and order. Not much fun when you are a fresh post op. The hosptial should handle this glitch in the system, not dump it on the patient. Also, I spilled my wawter container (by accident) and was told I would not be given another. (this on a day the air conditioning broke down and it was sweltering in the room). The staff relented when I started to cry.

How Selected: I had delivered both of my babies in this hospital and chose it because of it's excellent reputation.
Competitors: I know that this hospital is far superior to other local hospitals. It is known for it's medical advances and it's care.
Comments: I rated the hospital poor for restfullness because I was woken too often through the night for monitoring, which was probably "mostly" necessary. I rated it poor for taking care of my needs because since I was doing so well and didn't have any problems, I rarely saw the nurses and aides during the day because they were so busy with other patients that were having problems. If only they came to see me as much during the day as they had through the night, I would have been more pleased with my care.

Competitors: I have recieved care that was exponentially better than any other hospital I have been in.
Comments: Excellent is not a high enough praise. The staff was fantastic, my room was comfortable, private, and there was even a chair that converted to a bed to allow an overnight guest. That comforted me beyond words. I can't recommend Magee enough!

Competitors: By far the best wont go anywhere else for complications and treatment.
Comments: The nurses were fantastic, very upbeat and made me feel like a person, they did everything they could to keep me as comfortable as possible. I could never repay them for their kindness during those first 24 hours. I hated the bari-beds though, ugh!

How Selected: I researched the surgeons in the Pittsburgh area and contacted a few. Most I didn't have a good feeling for. When I contacted Dr. Eid's office, I knew right away that I'd be in good hands, and since he operated out of Magee I researched them and read good reviews so I felt comfortable and satisfied with my choice.
Competitors: UPMC, has good hospitals over all. But the staff at times leaves a lot to be desired.
Comments: The staff that I met with in the operating room were all wonderful. I felt in very good hands. The nursing staff during the day were very helpful and always very cheerful and nice. The night time staff was horrible. They don't answer the call button until they get good and ready. I had to wait for 2 hours after my pca pump ran out. My port site was leaking through my gown and saturated my sheets, I had to wait two hours to get assistance with that also. I was very dissappointed in the nighttime staff.

Comments: procedure not performed as expected; the anesthesologist I'd been told was aware of my past history of complications and would take good care of me was not present. 2-3 more surgeries needed. Insist your doctor use a MEASURING TAPE and mirror to ensure the incisions are in alignment. If you feel you are not being listened to or respected or your questions aren't being answered while in the hospital, you will need external support. Bottom line, look into all realistic options before making the decision. I still have nightmares.
