How Selected: Dr. Macura was my original bariatric surgeon in 2000 and at the time he was at Staten Island University Hospital but has since left there and is solely at Maimonides. I wanted to have a revision to my Duodenal Switch and wouldn't let anyone else but Dr. Macura operate on me so I had the revision surgery at Maimonides with him and Dr. Lazzara who is also wonderful as is their whole staff.
Competitors: I thought Staten Island University was a wee bit better but I have no real complaints about Maimonides except for one night when at 2 am a worker came in to clean the other bed in my room and woke me up out of a dead sleep banging and throwing things without any regard or thought of there being another patient in the room. I was scared out of my wits when I first woke up as I hadn't slept in a few days. Then I had to plead with the nursing staff to give me something else to help me go back to sleep. It was a tough night. Food service was also better at SIUH because Maimonides is stirctly KOSHER. They also do not have many DS patients so it took a few meals to get my diet straight as it is different from a RNY patient. Didn't have that problem at SIUH.
Comments: I think I said it all above.
