The hospital isn't much to look at, I think some of the staff (not the nurses), but some of the staff dealing with me were careless and acted like I was taking up their lunch hour--that was after I was moved out of CICU |
| Comments: |
Overall the wonderful nursing staff and my private room made my stay much more pleasant. One nurse out of 5 had to be sorted out, once he realized he wasn't God in my eyes or my familys', he never spoke to us again, which made the stay that much more pleasant.--I had life-Dr. Simpson is all jokes and has a bedside manner of Dr. Pierce on MASH, but truth be told, he's one of the best doctor's I've ever seen. When he needs to be serious, he tells it you straights, mentally holds your hand, and saves your life, and that's what he did for me! I love him and I think he's awesome! I think Maryvale Hospital is the luckiest hospital in all of Phoenix to have the the doctor's and nurses dedicated to their worked and the patients that pass through those particular doors. |

I was a little nervous about Maryvale Hospital, but I worried for nothing. Everyone was very pleasant and kind to me. The office staff and all the nursing staff were wonderful. I wasn't expected to spend the night, but ended up staying overnight and had a private room. |

I really did not care for the hospital, it seemed kind of run down in need of updates badly. I've been in a few hopitals, and this one was the least desirable. |
| Comments: |
I felt that some of the nurses could have been friendlier. I felt like they were there to do there job and that was it. I was very pleased with my pre- surgical nurse, Bettyshe was so warm and friendly and had a good sense of humor. My surgical nurse was a sweetie I can't remember her name, but she was swedish and spoke with an accent. Some of my paperwork got misplaced and I was not happy about that. On one of my papers in my room had the wrong first name on it. I'm glad I'm home. |

I had my RNY at St. Lukes. It is better for overweight people but they have a whole floor dedicated to bariatric surgery. But I would rather go where the doctor that I want practices. Rather than choosing a doctor because he practiced at a certain hospital. |
| Comments: |
Maryvale has a bad reputation but they have really done a lot to improve things in the past couple of years. I only had one snotty cna. Everyone else was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The only thing that would be better would be if they would put rocker recliners in the room like they have in the maternity ward. Be careful with the food. The kitchen brings you stuff that you aren't supposed to eat. I had a horrible roommate the first night so I asked to have my room changed and they put me in a private room which was great!!! |

Let me see now...There was Rose, Ginger, LilyBeth and Brenda. You all were absolutely the best. I never had a single problem that they did not handle with the upmost expediancy. Even the little things were taken care of proptly. Of course I have to say, that I never did touch the call button to get them to the room. My wife stayed with me the first night and took care of all my immediate needs and of course she's the best out of all of them. Wheneven I woke up, even from the surgery, my only thought and desire was to get up and walk. I did get in trouble several times for trying to wear out their new floor. Yes I did have to walk myself out, which was what I was going to tell them anyway. What are they going to say, NO? This is no countryclub, just a very caring hospital with a wonderful staff, right down to the cleaning people. All were very friendly and always had a smile available for me if'n I needed one. Thank you Maryvale Staff....I luv ya.... |

This hospital is lacking in many things mainly relating to after surgery care. I have been in the Mayo Brothers Hospital, First class, Desert Samariton Good, Maryvale was quite another experience.
|
| Comments: |
Usefull equipment like oversized wheelchairs were not available, they only had one plastic pan fo the two of use in the room, no tissue should you burp up stuff as I did.
They let you walk out of the hospital when you leave on you own from the room. This actually was fine with me 'cause I could get out faster.
Was given the wrong IV which led to removing the IV tube and difficulties replacing it. Between admitting and the
surgical floor they lost my prescription list.
Room for a lot of improvement. |

This is a no frills hospital. I had to ask for kleenx, but they brought me a box right away. The staff was nice and always answered my calls promptly, The hospital was very clean and that is important, their surgery room was up to date on all the latest equipment. I knew I was not going to a resort, but a place to have surgery and come home. I would go back if necessary. |

It was slightly less "comfortable" than some Tucson area hospitals I have stayed in, but that is only due to the nature of the surgery. |
| Comments: |
I had a private room so it was very quiet and restful. My complaints would be that, at the time I had my surgery, you had to rely on staff to help you up out of bed and it was not easy for either party. Now they have some device to help you get in and out. Also, I had to walk to the car at discharge because they couldn't find a wheelchair that I could fit in to. Other than a day nurse/night nurse power struggle to remove/re-hook up an IV line. It was what it was...a hospital stay..not a luxury vacation. |

Some of the nursing staff was pretty much on the ball, however there were a few that left much to be desired. Had I not had family there I probably would have dehydrated from lack of water/ice chips. I was forced to wait far too long for all medications, HBP meds, pain meds, etc. |

The Maryvale Facility is in need of some "updating" so it is kind of "blech" ... geez they didn't even have a large manual b.p. cuff on the 7th floor (?) BUT the staff were AWESOME! I was blessed to have Lee as my nurse 2 days in a row, he ROCKS! I had one snippy nurse but oh well one out of how many in 4 days is not bad. The staff work under less than ideal conditions but their attitude is very good towards their patients. |

Overall, clean, visitors said the caferteria had great food. They did not in any way cater to bariatric patients. I was unable to get a trapeze for my bed, unable to get a walker when I wanted to walk right after surgery, (I was told I'd have to buy it) I used a wheel chair but it was tough. A walker would have been extremely helpful in the first day or two. I soiled a bed and one of the gals really made me feel horrible about it. |

| How Selected:
| I did not select this hospital to go to.I believe the HMO/doctor selected it. |

I have had better nursing elsewhere, but maybe I am spoiled. The nurses did not know how to get my TV's sound on, and it took me asking a janitor to show me how. |

Bring your own toiletries, this is a bare bones hospital, expect no perks. It seemed the night nurses were better than the day ones, they were far more concerned with me individually. The nursing also seemed to be good Monday to Wednesday, then they changed nurses around.
I originally shared a room with an elderly dementia patient and I had to demand to change rooms to get some rest. They discharged the woman and I kept the same bed. |
