Comments: I was really pleased to have a private room, I hadn't expected that. My only problems were during the day shift the afternoon following my surgery. I was not told I needed to ask for pain meds after my PCA was removed. By the time I fianally asked, I was hurting. Somehow that fell through the cracks and 1 1/2 hrs later when I finally got my meds I was in extreme pain.

How Selected: This is the only hospital my surgeon chose to keep his patients at.
Competitors: They had an actual bariatric wing which was really nice and the cleaning crew did a great job and were incredibly nice.
Comments: The only reason I couldn't give this hospital excellent all around because of one nursing shift that was horrible. They didn't respond to one of my calls for almost 2 hours, I finally hobbled out there to get my pain meds. But the rest of the staff were so awesome and accomodating. They treated me with respect, they were very prompt to my calls, and helped me out so much with walking & my squeezers. I don't remember a lot of their names but I think one was Anne (she has a thick southern accent), one lady wore a nun outfit who was so kind, a young black gentleman, and another young black lady. I hope to go back and visit again soon!!!!

Competitors: Hospitals are all pretty much the same, aren't they? Nobody ever really wants to be there!!
Comments: I loved the nursing staff. They were all super helpful and very caring. All my needs were met with smiles and encouragement. The area set aside for WLS patients was relatively nice and comfortable. I had about a million visitors and they were all welcomed with smiles. They even let my dad stay with me the whole time. By the time I left, I had some pain meds for the road, but that was pretty much it. I think I maybe took some once when I got home before I went to bed that night. The nurses really were amazing!! Between them and my dad, I was walking miles around the place. Every time I wanted to get up and walk, they were right there until I was strong enough (and not hooked up to every machine known to man) to do it by myself.

Comments: The nurses know what they are doing and are very helpful to you. When I came out of recovery I was in a rome to myself on the 2nd floor, the next day I was moved to the 5th floor with a room mate. I would have loved to stay by myself because I had the room mate from hell. I could get no sleep for her allways call for the nurse to help her to the bathroom. They should ask people if they want a room to themself.

Comments: I would have much preferd a private room. Even though I had a very nice roomate, her husband was there all the time and I felt uncomfortable in my pj's and having to roll over and afraid something was going to show. I felt stuckup if I kept the curtian closed all the time. The room was in an older part of the hospital and very small for all of the things in the room. I had requested a private room and it was given to someone else. I was not happy about that at all.

Competitors: 2south is at the top of the list. 5N has a way to. The nurses on 2South was just super. There for you. 5 south had way to many patients to take care of. nurse was run ragged/
Comments: The surgery vist was super. Had to return two weeks later. Different as day is to night. Had ro go through the ER. It should be revised. Stayed there 8 hours. The Er DR only came briefly at the beginning He never returned. IV bag stayed empty even after I called the Nurses. The ER is definitely not a place I would want to go through again, My privat room was given to a lady, because the Er was slow in getting me to a room. Had to take a semi. Elderlt gentleman very sick, I had no sleep at all. Only one nurse showed any concern for me Deanna.I have been unforunate in having been in another hospital a few times. 5n and 5 S is below par for giving service. @ south is at the top. My first visit 30 Dec. 04 was just outstanding, Everything re surgery was outstanding, All dept. All of my needs was taken care of on 2 south. The second visit to 5 south was way below par. which included a stop in the ER. Which was very unsatisfactory, the Er Dr and Staff showed no concern for me what so ever. And there was the possibilty I may have been leaking from the staples inside my body. The ER staff was very disappointing. I would go back to Maryview, overall things was good with the exception of what I mentioned. I want no part of the ER. It was like I did not exist. The gastric by pass surgery part was outstanding. A nun came in to see the gentleman in my room, Had no time for me. (second visit) Again the surgery stay was just outstanding. The followup visit left alot to desired. I do not want to be negative, just wanted to be honest. DEFINITLY DID NOT LIKE IT WHEN MY PRIVATE ROOM WAS GIVEN TO A LADY, BECAUSE THE ER LAGGED BEHIND IN TAKING CARE OF ME. 5SOUTH TOLD ME THEY THOUGHT I WAS NOT COMING, SO THEY GAVE IT TO A WOMAN. tHEY DID NOT BOTHER CALLING THE ER TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON. WHEN I LEFT THE ER. I WAS TAKEN TO THE PRIVATE ROOM ONLY TO FINE A WOMAN HAD BEEN PLACED IN IT. TO ME IT WAS DISCRIMINATION. CAUSED BY A LACK OF COMMUNICATIONS. WHEN I QUESTIONED IT A NURSE WAS A LITTLE RUDE.

Comments: I had an excellent nurse, Theresa, while I was in the step-down care unit, she was wonderful. The room that I was moved to the next day was really not large enough to have 2 beds, and 2 recliners (which was a must after surgery), but the care was still very good.

Competitors: I have actually stayed at this hospital previously and did not have a good experience, so I was very concerned about that. However, they have changed and much improved their patient interaction since then. I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone came in at the start of their shift and introduced themselves and checked on me throughout their shift. And they even had a smile on their face!
Comments: They have greatly improved! Since I completed this survey the first time I have been back to this hospital to the ER. I would like to add that while they rated very high in my book in the places that were expecting Bariatric patients, but they need to work on educating the rest of their staff, especially in the ER.

How Selected: This is the only hospital that my doctor works out of.
Competitors: I was in a private room. They are up and coming in technology and just invested a lot of money in these new "BARIATRIC" beds to aid in the comfort of the overweight patients. They are not too familiar in how to use them but maryview is well aware of obesity issues and are well on their way to becoming a leader in the community. I never felt mentally uncomfortable in any one of the staff's eyes. The never degraded me in any fashion shape or form and were always more than willing to accomodate what I needed.
Comments: Over all my experience was truly better than I expected. The 5th floor was very hot for some reason and that posed a problem from time to time. I left my door open for circulation and it helped. The other issue was the new bariatric beds they have. It is awesome but not everyone is familiar in how to use them and I wound up being the test case and got a little irritated over it. One of the night nurses (although very sweet) was a little airheaded and made me stand for 15 mins while she tried to adjust the bed instead of finding help. BUT that I have to say was TRULY the only bad experience I had. I did have a private room. Everyone knocks before entering. Sometimes it took a little longer than I would have liked to get meds so if you need them tell them right away so that by the time you really need them they are there. The nurses were awesome. Deanna was mostly my nurse...also Latash and asst. Wanda. Thank you for making me feel like home and making my stay as best as you could. It made all the difference in the world.

Comments: The staff in ICU, especially Vtor Lewis was excellent. Couldnt ask for better care a real Godsent. The staff in the general unit was a bit different. They had to be called whenever I needed my meds changed. One shift was not respectful of the other coming on. I believe they are understaffed. I had to ask to be walked or a friend came by to help me.
