Competitors: Enormous hospital, and kind of hard to navigate. Otherwise pretty nice.
Comments: Everyone was friendly for the most part. Only one lady wasn't too nice. At night it's extremely hard to get a nurse to your room.. I was in pain for over an hour before I got relief... my IV had been leaking and was quite painful. Otherwise a good experience.

Competitors: I think MVC is as good as if not better than most of the area hospitals.
Comments: There is nothing bad I can say about my hospital stay. Everyone from the MD's to the cleaning staff couldn't have been nicer. While doing my hall walking even staff who weren't assigned to me would stop and give me encouragment. I would go back to MCV in a minute if I needed medical care.

How Selected: I selected my surgeon first, Eric DeMaria, based on reputation. He does all surgeries at MCV/VCU.
Competitors: I have never been admitted into any other local hospitals, so can't comment on patient services. This is an older hospital, so the accomodations are old, but fine.
Comments: I have nothing but good things to say about MCV/VCU. The surgical facilities were excellent and the staff was accomodating and caring. There are plenty of people around to take good care of the patients.

How Selected: Surgeon practiced here.
Competitors: I am from a different area.
Comments: The hospital was crowded, this cause a longer stay in the ICU than was required. The staff also had a special bed available for me due to the cronic arthritis I suffer, it was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever tried to sleep in. The replacement bed did not arrive until 2 days into my stay. The bed was to short for my height. It was fixed the last day of my stay by a nurse from a different area passing by and noticed my delimma apush the right button for extending the footboard.

How Selected: I know 8 people that had surgery done here and all greatly recommended Dr. Kellum very highly and it was very true, he was absolutely wonderful and the hospital was soooo wonderful they had some of the best nurses I have ever encountered they were right on top of everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Competitors: it doesnt even compare, it has all of them beat especially for customer satisfaction
Comments: it is truly a wonderful hospital, I could not have chosen a better place to have my surgery, they ALL treated me so well when I was there, offering their help and there when I needed them, if I had a pain they would rush me to xray to make sure it wasnt a blood clot, if my chest hurt they rushed me for a chest xray, no long waits everything was so fast and in a hurry, they really made you feel like they cared about you as a person and your health, I can honestly say that I had never had the care and compassion shown to me ever before like they did, there were two nurses that stood out to me the most and they were Erin and Michelle, they were on the gastric bypass recovery floor and they treated me with care that I will never ever forget

Comments: Always ask for a really experienced person when getting an IV in or a blood draw. I had a few doctors-in-training practice on me and I was ready to punch them. I am a "hard stick" and some of them didn't get the blood after sticking me several times!!!

Competitors: MCV is a learning hospital, I had never been in a learning hospital, but I felt very safe and that I was taken wonderful care of.
Comments: This hospital knows its stuff. The employees are wonderful, but they are very busy. I feel that if I had been in worse shape than I was I would have got more attetion. I had my husband with me all the time I was in the hospital and I really didnt need too much help from them. But I do feel if I had of, they would have provided it.

How Selected: Not only do I work for this hospital but it is also where my surgeon practices.
Competitors: I think MCVH is very comprable to other area hospitals. Keep in mind that it is a teaching hospital so therefore you will see some residents or med students.
Comments: Overall MCVH is great! Only negitive experence was with the radiology staff doing the upper GI's. This procedure is bad enough as it is considering that is the first thing you are putting in your new stomach but the staff was very rude. I was taken down to radiology at 11am adn my test was not done until 1pm or so - not sure b/c I slept on the gurney for most of my wait time due to the morphine. However, my IV began beeping, my urine collection bag was nearly full and I was in pain. Just to be treated so ugly! Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing!

Comments: The only thing that I see could be improved is the actual scheduled surgery times. I was told to be there by 6am and was not taken until after noon and then post surgery was not put in a room until after 3a.m. due to lack of beds... but the staff was outstanding where I was.

How Selected: I chose this hospital based on its well-formed gastric bypass program.
Competitors: This was my first surgery.
Comments: This review is in regards to the hospital staff NOT my surgeon's staff. Some of the hospital staff need some serious lessons in courtesy and assistance. I basically had to beg my night nurse to help me out of the bed. She even expected me to lift my own hospital bag off the floor when I needed something from it. My only other complaint was that when I was taken for my upper GI test, I was left on a gurney for two and a half hours. I was stuck in a small room, facing a corner, and only saw a human being once during this time. I had to call out "Hello! Hello!" twice to make sure I wasn't forgotten. I was super pissed when I finally got back to my room over four hours after I had left. Other than these two experiences, I was satisfied with my stay. My surgeon's staff and all the physicians have been excellent.
