Weight-Loss Surgery
What if you could say goodbye to yo-yo dieting forever? What if you could maintain a healthier weight and lifestyle for the first time in your life? What if that scale became a symbol of your achievement? With 15 years of dedicated specialization in weight-losssurgery, the Surgical Weight Loss Program at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center offers you a comprehensive, award-winning program with nationally renowned weight-loss surgeons, including dietary specialists, supportgroups with your peers, speaker programs and psychological counseling.
According to the National Institutes of Health, weight-loss surgery is the only effective therapy for morbid obesity and its complications.weight-loss surgery is not for everyone, but it might be for you. Let's face it,deciding to have weight-loss surgery is a big decision, and our expertise means you'll have a full range of minimally invasive weight-loss options to consider, including LapBand, gastric bypass, Roux-en-Y, duodenal switch, as well as revisions and reversals. Let our expertise be your comfort: the real depth and breadth of bariatric expertise of the esteemed surgeons at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, as well as our specialized and understanding staff, guiding you all the way. Most importantly, consider that our surgical weight-loss program has met the American Society for Bariatric Surgery's independent and rigorous requirements for designation as a Center of Excellence. The ASBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable patient outcomes in bariatric surgery. While complications are possible in any surgery, the rate of complications from surgery performed at an ASBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence are extremely low - less than 1 percent. For more information on the ASBS designation, go to surgicalreview.org.
Are You A Candidate For Weight-Loss Surgery?
To qualify for a bariatric procedure, you should:
- Have a body mass index of 35, be at least 80 pounds overweight or be more than
twice your ideal weight, and/or have coexisting medical problems
- Be able to show a serious past attempt to lose weight medically, through exercise or through programs such as Weight Watchers, TOPS, or Overeater's Anonymous
- Have no significant physical, medical, emotional or psychological problems that would dramatically increase the risk of surgery
- Be well educated about the procedure and capable of participating in treatment and long-term follow-up
According to the National Institutes of Health, anyone weighing 20 percent or more than their ideal body weight is obese. At that point, the extra weight becomes a health risk, contributing to a number of conditions, many of which are life threatening.
You Can Lose the Stereotype and Gain Control
At Memorial Hermann Memoria lCity, we're committed to providing people considering weight-loss surgery with reliable information and a full understanding of their options. Our program is comprehensive and patient centered, from pre-surgical counseling and information sessions to post-surgical support.

Weight-loss surgery is synonymous with change - change from a physiological point of view, change from a psychological point of view, change from a sociological point of view, and sometimes, change from a financial point of view. The weight loss surgery patient undergoes change in the body's metabolism, in attitudes regarding food and eating behavior, in self-image, in body image, and in attitude and relationships among family, friends and coworkers. To support all this change, the Surgical Weight Loss Program at Memorial Hermann Memorial City strongly focuses on mental health support. We address virtually every issue you're likely to face in the months and years after surgery through our post-surgery program, including your relationship with yourself and others, and reconstructive plastic surgery. Our support group meets monthly, and we strive to keep in close contact with our patients to maintain a high follow-up rate.
If you're considering weight-loss surgery, Memorial Hermann invites you to call 713.222.CARE to register for a free, no-obligation, weight-loss surgery seminar, or if you prefer, we can refer you for a private, in-office consultation with a renowned bariatric surgeon onstaff at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. | Comments: |
The staff, at my request, placed a sign on my door asking that the door to my room be completely closed at all times. This was followed through about 95% of the time for me. It made my stay much more quiet. Also, I did not want visitors on my last day, so they placed a sign on my door to have all visitors check-in at the nurses station. This allowed me to get more rest as my visitors could leave their notes/balloons/etc for me at the nurses station. |

I feel like Memorial Hermann Memorial City is the best for the money. This hospital is much cleaner and friendlier than any of the other hospitals around town - and rates much higher in my book than anything in the Texas Medical Center. |

| My surgeon's office is in the building next door, so I figured in case there were any complications, it woud be best to be near him. I was weary at first because I wasn't familiar with this hospital, but it ended up being GREAT! |
| Competitors: |
I felt like it had more to offer than Cy-Fair as far as other doctors and specialists. Every nurse I encountered was so positive and caring. I never had a problem getting pain meds when I felt I needed them. |
| Comments: |
I had a great experience with this hospital. This was the BEST hospital experience I've ever had. I was much more pleased with my stay here than I was the other times I have had to stay at Cy-Fair or Methodist Willowbrook! |

I went for 7 hours immediately after surgery with no pain meds! I repedidly asked for some thing for my pain and they told me that they could not give me anything else. I told them to call the Dr. and they said that he would not give me any more pain meds. I finnaly got them moving when I told them to get me another doctor. There was this lady her name is Mary and she came in and she had worked all day and then had to deal with me, she saved me. She got right ontop of things and made sure that I was taken care of. She informed my Dr. and I am sure that it will never happen to another one on his patients. There needs to be more people like her, she deserved a raise just for putting up with me that day. |

| It was one of three in Texas that my insurance would cover. While researching these three, I found Hermann Memorial on a list of the top 10 hospitals in the USA. I used that as my basis. |
| Competitors: |
I can't compare to other Houston Hospitals but compared to other hospitals that I, or other family members, have been in, Hermann Memorial has been the best with respect to care. I would recommend this hospital to anyone. |
| Comments: |
The nursing staff was incredible, especially my night nurse. The first night I was out of it and my husband said this poor nurse was trying so hard to keep me comfortable and I was being somewhat difficult. When she came on duty the second evening, she ran another nurse out of my room saying that she would be taking care of me and that is what she did. Due to my complications, I remained on the monitors and IV through the second night, which meant I had to get up to go to the bathroom every hour or so. She responded immediately to my calls and by time I returned to bed, she had my bed straightened or changed and then attended to any other needs I had. This was simply the best hospital care I have ever encountered.
The negative to this hospital is the parking. It is difficult to find and is way overpriced as far as I am concerned. The hospital covered valet parking on the day of surgery but we had to pay for the next two days. The day I went home, we paid $8.00 for just over an hour. |

The only other surgery I have had was a C-section at another hospital. when comparing the two, the difference is night and day. MHMC seemed so much organized, less paperwork, more care. |
| Comments: |
I felt that the staff was very attentive (and even entertaining at times!) to my needs. Even more important, I felt they were very responsive. While the hospital is not luxury status, I felt it was well above the average comfort level for a hospital -- I had a private room, phone and a flat screen TV. |

I loved this hospital and most of the staff. All the nurses on the 5th floor were so friendly and made me feel very comfortable. There was a gentleman from Oklahoma who came in at night to check my blood pressure and temperature who was very kind too. A lot of people came and checked on me fairly frequently, but its better to be checked on than ignored. Also, a lady from the WLS support group came to visit me while I was in the hospital and she shared her story with me -- I found that to be extremely helpful. I think this is a great hospital to have bariatric surgery. |

My hospital was pretty good. I can compare it to my husband's hospital stay. His RNY surgery was 4 mos. before at Park Plaza Hospital, & his hospital time was much worse than mine - example: on every food tray, they gave him sugar food products & he was on a diabetic/no sugar soft diet. |

In giving x-rays, weren't able to slide me onto the xray table. Took several hours to move me for a simple xray. I wouldn't suggest this hospital, in case of complications. They aren't equipped to handle anything other than normal situations. |

Overall, I was quite pleased with the hospital and the care I received. There was one nurse that was very, very slow and fumbly, which caused me to have less confindence in her abilities. |

| This was the only hospital that the ddr who did the surg did it out of. No choice on my part. |

Mostly all the hospitals in Houston unless its MD Anderson or The University on down town are all the same, you have some employees who are rude and some arent. |
| Comments: |
The hospital was dirty, my room never got cleaned by housekeeping, my bed was changed once in 3 days. The nurses were great and they came in a timely manner when I called for pain meds. |

I've never had to saty in the hospital before, but the hospital seemed organized and clean. The nurses that took care of me, Bridgette and Huyala on the 5th floor were very good. James the pca was also very nice. |

If I had to go to the hospital again, I'd choose Memorial Hermann Memorial City.

| The Doctor comes to this hospital. It is on my ins plan and I work for the Memorial Hermann system. |

The area I stayed in was newly opened. Therefore things was very good. I am unable to compare this stay with another hospital. |
| Comments: |
The hospital staff was very good on my first night in the hospital. The second night the 3rd shift staff was not as good as the previous night. As for as the other shifts they were great. I do recommend that any one having surgery would need someone to stay with them because the nursing staff sometimes are not able to respond fast enough for your needs. Like going to the bathroom. I needed help getting out of bed and sometimes the staff just cant get there fast enough to help you. It is easier if you have someone to help you. |
