About this Hospital
Memorial Hermann Hospital Weight Loss Surgery Program
Designated as an American Society for Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
Memorial Hermann Hospital specializes in weight loss (bariatric) surgery, providing a dedicated floor for patients with private rooms and specially trained nurses and staff attuned to the specific needs of weight loss patients.   We offer the latest technology, including robotic-assisted surgery, which gives surgeons the flexibility of traditional open surgery while operating through tiny incisions. Robotic-assisted procedures simplify a number of existing surgeries, making them less invasive and decreasing recovery time.
Are You a Candidate?

According to the National Institutes of Health, anyone weighing 20 percent or more than the ideal for his or her body is obese. At that point, the extra weight becomes a health risk, contributing to a number of conditions, many of which are life-threatening.

If you are obese, weight loss surgery may be an option to help you control your weight. To qualify, you should:

  • Have a body mass index of 40, be at least 100 pounds overweight or be more than twice your ideal weight, or have a BMI between 35 and 40 with a coexisting medical problem related to obesity
  • Be able to show a serious past attempt to lose weight medically, through exercise or through programs such as Weight Watchers
  • Have no significant physical, medical, emotional or psychological problems that would make surgery unnecessarily risky
  • Be well educated about the procedure and be able to participate in treatment and long-term follow-up
Insurance

Memorial Hermann contracts with most major insurance plans. Coverage for bariatric surgery varies depending on the individual policyholder's plan. Please contact the program director for assistance in determining your coverage and payment options.

Comments: Parking is expensive, but I stayed on Bariatric ward. Private room (not requested!), they are so sensitive there, I loved the nurses. I was there during the Walk From Obesity drive and the regular nurses were off that day so they could be there and catch up with their patients! How awesome is that?

Competitors: I was disappointed in the hospital after the surgery. Since I had surgery at Park Plaza several years ago, Herman does not compare to Park Plaza on the care after the surgery.
Comments: I felt that I was left to my own accord. No one came to get me out of bed. I took off the leg pressure cups and walked myself. I also was given the breathing thingy and told do it. No other instructions or follow up to it being done. I am glad I had the surgery before so I knew what I needed to do since the nurses didn't seem to care.

The already explained everything in detail why they would do what they were doing, but if you had questions they were very accomodating and treated you with utmost respect while answering you or double-checking if you were concerned about anything.
Comments: This hospital was just great. Attentive, prompt, well-equipped. They let my husband, mom and dad stay with me all the way up to the surgery door, so I was never alone. Even though their policy was 2. They were great.

Competitors: It was top of the line.
Comments: They met my every need very quickly. The nurses worked 12 hour shifts, so they got to know you. Either the hospital or my doctor, I'm not sure which, paid the $10 for my husband's parking the first day.

How Selected: It was selected for me because this is where my doctor works. Dr. Naaman is a wonderful doctor.
Competitors: I was last in a hospital in Round Rock Tx just 7 years ago for surgery. They did not make me beg for pain medication. Also let me sleep through the night.
Comments: I do not understand the need to wake someone at 3:00AM for blood. Then drop the blood and have to do the whole thing all over again. Also with all the methods of pain relief there are, why does one have to beg for pain shots only to have them come 30-40 minutes after asking. Then just as the pain subsides, they wake you for something.
