How Selected: It is an HCA hospital, (I work for HCA). The care was very impressive. No joking, no snide remarks, no snickering, no gawking. Very sensitive, HIPPA compliant, and I would not hesitate to reccommed this hospital to others having Bariatric surgery, especially Lap-Band.
Competitors: Better than other hospitals in the area, as I went to several seminars and support groups in the area and determined MHJ was the best choice for me.
Comments: I am proud to me an employee as well as a patient of such an organization as HCA and MHJ.

How Selected: It is where Dr. Yasrebi performs surgery - so it is it as far as surgery goes.
Competitors: I have had one of my children at this hospital and had a wonderful experience. I have been to the ER of another and was not as pleased as I have been with Memorial.
Comments: Good hospital. Dr. Yasrebi requires that you have someone stay with you throughout the night during your stay - so the nurses really don't have to do much because whoever stays with you is the person that helps you out.

How Selected: This is the hospital my doctor selected.
Competitors: Have not been to other local hospitals.
Comments: Although the lapband is typically done as an out-patient procedure my doctor chose for me to stay overnight because I lived several hours away. The pre-op and post-op nurses were great. My probelms began when I was sent to my room. When I asked one of the Patient Care Techs when I could get up to walk she told me we would do it later. I told her that my doctor wanted me up every couple of hours for 10 to 15 minutes she told me that they were too busy to keep up with that schedule. The couple of times I asked for broth and jello it took several requests to get it. The first time, my husband had to go find the nurse more than an hour later. She was nice and said she got busy and forgot. The next morning at 5 a.m. I asked for more broth and I never got it. After shift change I asked my new nurse for broth and expained I had asked for it an hour ago, he said he would be right back with it... and more than 1 hour later I still didn't have it. Since I was on pain meds I was in and out of sleep... and when I woke up and realized how long it had been I pushed the nurse button and didn't get a reply. I finally got unhooked from everything and walked the halls and asked for some at the nurses station, still didn't get it. I finally got broth at 8:30... more than 3.5 hours after I originally asked for it. I was almost in tears. The nurse appologized and said that he got busy and forgot. That said, the nurses and patient care techs were very nice, but were probably overwhelmed with the number of patients. If you stay there overnight I would definitly have someone stay in the room with you to make sure you have what you need.

How Selected: The hospital selection was a default after I picked my surgeon.
Competitors: This hospital is really the only one I've experienced in this area so I cannot comment.
Comments: On the day of the surgery and during recovery, everyone was very respectful and knew what I needed. During pre-op testing, it was a little different experience, I even had a tech doing my EKG criticize me for having surgery as the easy way out. To this day, I remember it with anger and hurt and my husband badly wanted to complain. I run a surgery support group locally and have heard only about 50 percent of patients has the overall good experience I did. Some never made it to a room, some where given food they couldn't eat, etc. Hopefully things have consistently improved in the more than 2 years since my surgery.

Competitors: St Vincents hospital has better nurses and staff then Memorial. I would also rate Baptist Nausau better as well. I would never go to Memorial Hospital again if I didn't have to.
Comments: The nurses were a bit scary. First nurse was young and had trouble putting in a new IV. I let her have three tries mustering up all the confidence in her I could but final after the third time said three strikes you are out, go get the charge nurse. My bandages were not changed the entire time I was there and not even the day I left. I would never go to Memorial Hospital again. Their pain management for patients is practically non-existant. They are unprofessional, especially in Special Procedures. The do not have the right part to go with G tubes that they place in people. The nurses gave me very little instruction on the G tube I was going home with. I ended up with burnt skin, very painful. Also when I went for a CT scan they left me alone in a hallway where their was traffic. I was very scared. They left me there alone for about 30 minutes.

How Selected: Surgeon uses this facility,
Competitors: Can only compare Memorial with St. Vinicent's. Memorial has the same level of care. Nurses, PCT's and Dietary staff were all attentive.
Comments: My room was beautiful!!! Especially for a hospital room. Wood floors, freshly redone. Nurses were responsive with pain medication and other physical needs. When it was time to walk that first afternoon and on thru the night---they or a PCT was there to accompany me until I could negotiate the hallway with an IV pole on my own. Beds had air mattresses. Not as unbearable as the old "style." The recliner in my room was FABULOUS. I think I sat/slept there more than I did my bed. Bathroom was large. Plenty of room for me and the IV Pole. However on day of discharge, I had to use the "hall shower." Talk about SMALL about the size of a phone booth. One night Dietary "forgot" to bring me dinner and the charge nurse was able to round up s/f popsicles and s/f Jello for me. They keep those on the floor for GB patients. Patient transport between 5th floor and Radiology were just great---they were attentive to needs making sure that ifyou were cold, you got a warm blanket before heading downstairs. Overall----Excellent

Comments: I had a PCT during my first day of admittance that was wonderful( Friday 7am-7PM); her name was Charlotte Capers. This woman was an excellent care provider, it was important to her that your needs were taken care of and she went out of her way to insure they were. When the hospital brought my first meal it was completely wrong, she tracked down everything and made sure that it was the right product. My water was always fresh, full and cold. When I needed something, I basically only needed to think about it and she was there. If all of the PCT’s, I experienced while there; were as good as this wonderful lady, all patients in the hospital would receive excellent care. I give Charlotte and A++. She cares and it shows!
