How Selected: I mainly selected my surgeon first, and he performs his surgeries here at Mercy. After having attended a couple of the support groups for bariatric patients, I learned this hospital has a special accreditation from the American Bariatric Association. All of their employees receive sensitivity training, and are equipped with appropriate sizing of various items such as chairs, gowns, etc. [Note: Updated 9/21/06. Will update this once I'm post-op.]

How Selected: because that is where Dr. Fleites mostly performs this surgery.
Competitors: The hospital is very outdated, looks like a third country hospital, I think it needs a new apperance .
Comments: I didn't like the service of the recovering nurses. I remember having to wait 3 hours in order to have "Demeroll" pain medication. It was HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! I do not recommend this hospital to anyone.

How Selected: My surgeon only uses this hospital
Competitors: The hospital was not bad at all. The parking seems to be there only problem. I still am a Baptist fan and prefer it. But my stay was not the worst ever.
Comments: Based on all the reviews I expected my stay to be the worst. But it was not. The staff was nice. There was a bit of a wait when you would call the nurse, but that is not there fault. Each nurse tends 15-20 patients at a time. The nurse's assistant actually helped me the most. Overall it was ok. I did not excpect to be treated as if I were at a spa paying $1k a night. But I was treated good.

How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon is affiliated with but it was not my first choice.
Competitors: I was surprised at the excellent service I received. The nursing staff was extremely attentive. I still prefer Baptist Hospital and would have liked to have the surgery there. My second choice would have been South Miami Hospital.
Comments: I was born in this hospital (1968) and think it needs a major renovation which they are working on. Compared to other hospitals in the area this one seems old. Since this is a Catholic hospital I would think the church would donate some of those millions they have stashed at the Vatican. Except for appearances, the care I received was top-notch.

How Selected: My doctors choice...He works in the professional building across from the hospital
Competitors: I'm a nurse myself...we are all overworked. The comparison wth other hospitals is about the same. Please never go to doctor's hospital, they are the worst.
Comments: My experience was so-so..I told the night nurse that the pain medication burned my iv and I didn't need it but was given it anyways..very painful. My nurse never came when the iv pump went off, even after calling him. I turned it off myself..then when he finally came he left the door open. I had to try to get the strength to get out of bed to close it..then in the morning my iv was out and my arm was all swollen.

How Selected: No choice---only place my srgeon goes to.
Competitors: Well, I really feel that the PEOPLE make the difference...and there are good and bad everywhere
Comments: The nurses in pre-op were awesome. VERY VERY nice. Being wheeled into surgery I was pretty much ignored. They were too busy talking about the fact that the new bed that they were trying out broke one of the overhead lights in the room last time they used it. My doctor was, of course, awesome. Very sweet. The nurses that I had the first night were HORRIBLE...DISGUSTING LOSERS who should not have ever been admitted to nursing school. One man who came in after I had been ringing for over a half an hour said "I'm not your nurse. Why don't you ring the bell, I"m sure they will come running." Then maliciously, (IN my mind) left my door wide open. I mustered up all my strength, but couldn't get up. Then when someone bothered to answer my bell, they answered in Spanish. Yes, I understood, but expended all my energy to say Yo no hablo espanol. That pissed me off so much!!! Needless to say they got a nurse there, who managed to let me know she wasn't MY nurse, she was just helping. Like I care either way!!! If I could have walked out I would have I was crying so hard..... Then, The next two days were great. HUH? Like I said before no hospital has all good or bad. They were great to me. (I don't want to think that it's because I told my doctor, but I guess he took care of it...immediately.) They were sweet, kind and funny. One even said she envied me because I was going to look so good. Another one even gave me a back massage cuz I couldn't sleep. I had an amazing view of Biscayne Bay which calmed me tremendously. So I was there approx 3 days. One horrible, and two great. (Well as great as a stay in the hospital can be.) At the end they really tried to make me happy....

Comments: I actually had a great experiene at this hospital. Except for having to wait in the recovery room for a long period of time for a room to become available, I have no complaints. My nurses were very responsive and professional. The assistants were more then nice and made sure that I was very comfortable.

I love the hospital it gave me peace in every sense of the word.. The nurses were super sweet and understanding I was glad enough to go to mercy to have this done, I have only good things to say about it and i hope that you dont get scared of some of the comments posted here, everybody have different opinions and my experience was great... How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon uses.
Competitors: It was the same as any of the other hospital I have been in. NO worse and NO better.
Comments: I had a good experience at Mercy. The nursing staff was friendly and helpful. My medication was brought to me as I needed it. Advise and suggestions were given to make me feel more comfortable. The hospital is equiped with larger size beds with bars, to help me get up and down out of bed easier. Also with large size wheelchairs, so those tiny wheelchairs' wheels do not rub a fire on my butt. The staff provided extra gowns to cover the back side, that always hangs out of those tiny little gowns. The only critisism I have is that my first day out of surgery, my nurse was supposed to come to help me walk for the first time, and she never did. I asked the next nurse and she had no problems helping me, and also let me push the medicine cart to steady myself. Which really helped. I definately reccommed this hospital for WLS.

How Selected: The Doctors I trust work all at this hospital.
Competitors: I think there is more personalized attention.
Comments: Just a comment on the questions I rated average. I think the staff needs to be more sensitive to patients needs specially the night shift staff. Sometimes it would take the night nurse 2 hours to respond with pain or sleep medications apparently nurses are understaffed. On the parking side they are working on it.

Competitors: This was a horrible experiecne. I would not return except to visit with my WLS doctor.
Comments: I had nothing but problems. While some staff members went out of their way to make me comfortable, most were downright rude. Overall, I would not return to this hospital, except to be near my doctor. He was the best part of my experience.

How Selected: I formerly lived in Coconut Grove and this is the main hospital.
Competitors: Miami Heart Institute and Mt. Sinai on Miami Beach are much better than Mercy Hospital.
Comments: The hospital was like visiting a third world country. Everyone spoke Creole or Spanish and I would never go there again. The doctor ordered a cup of broth that never did arrive. On the whole the service was very poor and did not compare to Mt. Sinai or Miami Heart Institute on Miami Beach.

Competitors: Its a great hospital.
Comments: All things related to the procedure and the nurses in preop and ccu were beyond excellent. I felt safe and well taken care of. Once on the floor, care was overall good as far as meds but not great. It took a long time for nurses to come to the room when needed;especially at night when I was alone and needed to get up or back into bed.
