Competitors: This was my first ever hosptial stay, so I have nothing to compare it
Comments: The only reason I marked AVERAGE to the staff responsiveness to my needs is because of the night nurses- the day nurses were WONDERFUL; the night nurses were horrible. It was like night and day (pun intended)

How Selected: My surgeon was associated with this hospital and it is close to home.
Competitors: Living on Long Island most people say that LIJ or North Shore hospitals are the best. I was pleasantly surprised and extremely happy with my choice in picking Mercy Medical Center.
Comments: I really didn't have to worry too much about the parking, but from what my family tells me the parking is not such a great situation. It is an inconvenience to not be able to get a token in the parking lot. The other complaint I was told is that if change has to be given it should be in "common currency" and not silver dollars.

How Selected: I used Mercy Medical Center because that is the hospital my surgeon uses.
Competitors: Although Mercy Medical Center is a very small hospital, they were as competent as larger hospitals that I've used, such as Long Island Jewish, NYU or Beth Israel Medical Center.
Comments: I was a bit uneasy using such a small hospital. I imagined they would not be as hi-tech as the larger teaching hospitals. Not only were they good as a larger hospital, I found the staff more personable, and friendly. The difference between Mercy Medical Center and a larger Medical Center, would be to compare shopping at a 'super-mega store' with going to a 'small mom-and-pop store'. You don't feel like a number, the staff treat you like a friend. It's an overall warmer, friendly atmosphere and the quality of care is just as great.

How Selected: I had my children there and enjoyed the accomodations.
Competitors: Quaint (but growing), professional and clean. Efficient and very friendly staff.
Comments: Anne Boland is by far the best nurse I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. She is conscientious, attentive and extremely professional and efficient. Anna Stoessel is the best choice they could have ever made for the Head Bariatric nurse. She is so personable and concerned for us, genuinely. You never feel like your'e a burden no matter how much you ask her. She's great! Downside: You can definitely tell the difference between the day shift and the night shift. Not very responsive, a bit discombobulated and little regard for sleeping patients.

Competitors: Mercy is one of the better hospitals in the area. There are some hospitals near me that i wouldn't go to for all the money in the world.
Comments: All the nurses and staff were extremely attentive. They were compassionate, not just going through the motions of their daily job. Anna was wonderful as well.

Comments: The nursing staff was outstanding, especially Nicole, Agnes and Lisa the nursing assistant. I felt like they were attentitive, caring and very personal. Anna who runs the bariatric program is a real genuine person, she follows up and makes herself totally available for any concerns before and after your surgery. The recovery room nurses were the only downside, they were fueding amongst themselves and appeared to be bothered to help. Every tech/transport person was as kind as the workers at Disney. I had an exceptional tech in radiology who helped me conquer the swallow test, he helped make the entire situation bearable, a real caregiver.

Competitors: I loved this hospital. The staff was so caring and the hospital was immaculate.
Comments: I had a private room and the nurses were constantly checking on me. I was awaken every 1/2 hour to go for my mandatory walk. I could not ask for better staff.

Comments: Having fat robes and big chairs doesn't make them specialists in bariatric surgery. I was put in a room with four people so privacy was nil. I will not comment on the lack of care as I am unsure if I am going to escalate the matter.

Comments: I can't say enough good things about Mercy Medical Center; their wls program is relatively new [8 months old] but you can tell that they've done their homework. The staff is caring, friendly, accomodating, efficient and encouraging. Everyone there went out of their way to make me comfortable. The unit was also very quiet; i found it easy to get a lot of sleep.

How Selected: Mercy was one of two choices from my surgeon - I heard it had a great reputation and chose to go there.
Competitors: I have been to several other local hospitals and I have to say that Mercy is definitely one of the best. It is a smaller hospital which is better because you seem to get more attention which is needed right after surgery.
Comments: Ana Stossel - the bariatric coordinator is GREAT. I also had many nurses who were wonderful but don't remember their name - except Barbara - they were all wonderful.
