How Selected: It was the available hospital on my surgery day.
Competitors: I LOVED IT. The only issues I saw posted or discussed were about the lack of privacy and since I contracted CA-MRSA late last year, and I haven't had 3 non-positive tests since then, I was given a private room. Everything was excellent. Except some of the nurses were a little angry about how enthused I was after surgery and that I didn't want to go to sleep. I apparently get very honest when I've been given pain medication.

How Selected: My docs practice at UW & Meriter but the first date available was at Meriter so I took it.
Comments: My overall experience was great. The only minor complaint is that Meriter doesn't offer a private room, and my roommate had serious needs that kept the staff very busy. I didn't go unattended to, it was just basic, but the staff was fabulous from the check-in clerk, to my nurses & docs, to the floor staff.

How Selected: My surgeon operates at two Madison hospitals, and the other (UW Hospital) in notorious for transmitting MRSA to its surgical patients.
Competitors: I think it's outstanding. I have no experience with St. Mary's, but I think it is equal or superior to UW for most things.
Comments: My only problem was with space - when I was finished with surgery, I spent 3 hours in the recovery room because there were no beds available upstairs - I guess there were several people who were supposed to be discharged but then got worse. I ended up going to day surgery, and the nurses there are less familiar with WLS. The staff were WONDERFUL. In particular, my recovery room nurse was fabulous. She even let my mom come down and sit with me there - they normally don't allow family in the recovery room. Everyone was so kind, and so professional.

How Selected: Surgeons use two hospitals; this one was available during the time frame I'd requested.
Competitors: I have not stayed at any other local hospitals, but I have had many hospitalizations prior to this one.
Comments: First, let me say that the morning of surgery, everything was great. The admit nurse, anesthesiologist, and of course my surgeons were fabulous about keeping me informed and calm. BUT from there it went downhill. Post-op, this is the worst care I have ever received while hospitalized. There were not many patients on the floor during my stay; nevertheless, it often took 15-20 minutes for a nurse to answer my call. My room was very noisy--right by a storage closet and the door was continually slamming shut. No one seemed to know what type of radiology I needed the a.m. after surgery, and the staff in radiology were rude and not good at informing me of the results of my swallow test. I was left sitting alone for a LONG time after the test before being returned to my room. I overheard two CNAs arguing over who was going to assist me in walking the halls. Lab tech for blood draws was tentative and it took three attempts to get it right (have never had any problem with blood draws before). Night nurses were VERY poor--inattentive, condescending, dismissive of pain, and didn't seem to understand how the compression stockings worked. One nurse offered a straw and 7-UP, both no-nos for bariatric patients. Couldn't wait to be home!!

How Selected: This was one of the Hospitals my Dr used. I decided to go to the smaller of the two.
Competitors: I was treated very well and had a nurse when ever I needed one for pain. My room was clean, I feel that my visit was just as good or even better than some hospitals I have been in.
Comments: If you have to have a Hospital for anything this is a good place to go. they were very aware of how to handle my situation.

How Selected: physician use
Competitors: My physicians practice at two facilities: Meriter and UWH. I feel UWH is a superior facility and would avoid staying at Meriter in the future. If that was not feasible, I would have someone stay with me.
Comments: One example: After passing my post-op barium swallow test, I was abandoned in a remote hallway unattended for 25 minutes until I literally started yelling for someone to come help me. I had complications from the surgery, and the internal bleeding left me nauseous and dizzy. I feel that post-op patients should be returned to their room after tests OR if they must be left in hallways be given some sort of means of contacting nursing staff for help. I felt very unsafe. Another example when I felt very vunerable was having to wait for 2 1/2 hours for nauseau medication because the nurse felt I should try other methods, including walking in the hall - this despite being on bedrest orders and BPs ranging in 90s/50s. These are just two examples of many more that I could give.

How Selected: One of two options for my surgeon.
Competitors: Very good - above average
Comments: I had a poor roommate - which is really no fault of the hospital - it happens. Other than that, my stay was as good as any hospital stay can be.

How Selected: I had a choice of 2 where my surgeons worked. I chose Meriter over UW because of past experience there for myself and my husband. The quality of service at Meriter is always very high.
Competitors: I would choose Meriter over UW for anything except possibly experimental stuff. Meriter is smaller, friendlier, more accomadating, and the staff is really excellent.
Comments: The overall staff are always friendly and helpful in any way they can be. The nursing staff on 9E where the post-op patients were, was awesome. The nurses were friendly, interested in getting to know me, very attentive to my needs and enthusiastic about my future. The doctors, technicians and anethesiologists were all true professionals.

How Selected: This hospital was highly recommended through my local support group
Competitors: The care was wonderful. The staff was very attentive and responded to my every need.
Comments: I would highly recommend this hopsital to anyone considering WLS. I just loved all the nurses and received exceptional care while I was there.

How Selected: Determined by surgeon availability versus operating room availability.
Competitors: Very competitive. Good staff.
Comments: The one thing I find unusual was the amount of staff asking me questions about this surgery. Some I believe might have been considering wls. They have the medical personnel there everyday to ask. Maybe they just needed to hear from a patient?

How Selected: My Surgeon does the roux-en Y at either Meriter Hospital, or University of Wisconsin Hospita. Meriter was in my ppo ChoiceCare network.
Competitors: I feel the hospital was equipped to handle bariatric patients with no problem. My minor complaint was that the beds were not long enough. I am 6'5"
Comments: Staff was efficienta and very dignified. Loved the sense of humor that was given in the time i was there. I had a semi-private room. Other person in the bed drove me insane wanting to talk all the time. I was recovering, and did not appreciate it.

How Selected: This was the hospital that my surgeons Dr. Gould and Dr. Garren do the surgery at.
Comments: Everyone was just wonderful to me! The nurse that helped me before the surgery, Nancy, was so sweet, funny and caring. Dr. Garren was there to talk to me before the surgery and i must say, he is one terrific person! (Dr. Gould and Dr. Garren do each surgery together ). The anesthesiologist made sure that i knew what would be happening, and the pre-op nurses each went over things with me. Everyone checked and double checked everything to make sure i would be very safe. Boy! I felt so well cared for! After the surgery, the nurses were so very kind and helpful; around when i needed help moving, getting up to use the facilities or walking. I can't say enough about my experience.

Comments: They have a floor that they use exclusively for bariatric bypass patients so the nurses seemed to understand our needs. However, it is a teaching scool and it was obvious that, in my case, at least one nurse was clueless. E.G., I was given a glass of water to drink with a straw.
