About this Hospital
METHODIST HOSPITAL OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — BARIATRIC SURGERY
Weight Loss Surgery - Learn All The Facts
If you are considering gastric bypass surgery, you owe it to yourself to learn all the facts about this life-changing procedure. Most bariatric patients have tried and failed to lose weight using more conventional methods of weight loss. They often see gastric bypass surgery as their means of last resort for permanent weight reduction. Still, the decision to undergo surgery is a serious one. In addition to researching the types of procedures performed, candidates for bariatric surgery should carefully evaluate the physicians and hospitals offering this procedure. You will quickly learn that not all programs are alike.
Recognized as a Certified Bariatric Center of Excellence
Experience counts when it comes to complex bariatric surgery. With more than 1,000 laparoscopic, Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses performed, California Bariatric and General Surgery Associates (CBGSA) is one of the most experienced groups in the Los Angeles area. Based at Methodist Hospital of Southern California, CBGSA physicians and the hospital have been recognized together by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Our program is one of only two such centers of excellence so honored in Los Angeles County. Why is this significant for patients?
Because clinical evidence demonstrates that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, the ASBS Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well.
The ASBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
By definition, surgeons with ASBS Center of Excellence designations practice only top-quality care, ensuring efficacy of the procedure with each patient to the best of their abilities.
To earn a Center of Excellence designation, CBGSA and Methodist Hospital underwent a series of site inspections that scrutinized all aspects of the program’s surgical processes and accompanying data on health outcomes. CBGSA, Methodist Hospital and other centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation continually share information on best practices, protocols and outcomes data. When you select CBGSA and Methodist Hospital for your bariatric surgery, you can feel confident that our experience can help you achieve the results you want, as safely as possible.

I can't say enough about the staff at the hospital, they were really just awesome. It was clean and well staffed and everyone was friendly and attentive.
This is the hospital where my surgeon performs. It is close to my home (about 20 minutes away) and is relatively new.
Competitors:
This hospital is pretty new. It has a brand new wing devoted to bariatric surgery. It has many dieticians and out patient support systems here. My doctor's office support group meets here twice a month. The dietician is here also. This hospital is huge and has a brand new tower. The rooms are spacious and overlook a near-by park. If I wasn't in so much pain, I would have thought I was at a hotel.
Comments:
I loved this hospital. Everyone was very nice. They kept the bariatric patients together on one wing. My roomate and I were able to share experiences and tips on how to succeed as weight loss post-op. My doctors perform exclusively through this hospital and are wonderful. They brought us flowers after the surgery. (HOW SWEET IS THAT?) I enjoyed my stay at this hospital. I did feelt that one of my nurses was less than satisfactory, but everyone else was so wonderful that it made up for her inabilities.
well the birth of my son had alot of reasons for my stay in the hospital but it was a great experience
Competitors:
well the cleanest most caring people and staff in the world
Comments:
this is the best choice in hospitals i would highly reccomend this hospital .... great people and large wheelchairs... sensitive people makes you feel like a queen when your in pain
The check-in procedure was simple and quick and the staff was wonderful. My surgery was delayed a couple of hours and the staff entertained me and my family.
I have stayed at a few and this one is definitely one of the very best
Comments:
Every nurse that I came in contact with was wonderful. Due to the census of the hospital, I had a roommate. Everyone was appologetic but it was really awful. She moaned all night and was a miserable person. My nurses were the best but Ella was wonderful especially when I had pain and a fever that kept me and extra day. I feel that this hospital is truely one of the best.
My surgeon selected the location. I was actually leaning towards Huntington (Pasadena)
Competitors:
I am VERY happy I went with Arcadia over Huntington.
Comments:
My nurse Heidi was the best ever!!!! She was so supportive, had answers to my questions and really cared. I feel very lucky to have had so much support and encouragement from the staff at the hospital. Everyone was very nice and considerate.
I found this hospital because this is what my surgeon uses.
Comments:
I really liked the hospital. The nurses, CNAs, and the staff were very responsive and kind. Plus the bed I had was brand new and was really comfortable and was very wide. The facilities were attractive as well.
It's the hospital my surgeon does his surgeries at.
Competitors:
I don't know of any other hospitals in the area, but my stay was superb.
Comments:
All of the nurses were extremely nice and I was able to control my pain with the push of a button. The hosptial was clean and professional. Everyone who came in my room, knew what surgery I had. AND, I had my own private room, which I loved!!!
After the laproscopic surgery I developed complications, the pain was so bad,but the nurses were judgmental and thought I was not telling the truth, they were rude, told me to stop being a baby, one even thru a pillow at me ,they didn't belive me, well I almost died from bleeding internally. After the 2nd surgery they all got much nicer.
I was very pleased with my stay at Methodist. Everyone I dealt with was friendly and helpful, and since they do a lot of WLS's they were very prepared. They made my procedure and stay as comfortable as possible.
My Dr. practices out of this hospital, plus they are now equipped to handle overweight patients. (Beds, gowns, etc)

This hospital is the one my doctor uses.

I've been fortunate enough where I haven't had to stay overnight in the hospital often so I don't have much to compare it with.
Comments:
The hospital staff is great, but they are short staffed. At least that was the case when I was there. I would recommend making sure you're not alone a lot while there. Having someone close by to bring you what you need or having someone go directly to the nurses station helps tremendously. I had to ask for a large hospital gown in pre-op which was a little disappointing and embarrassing being that I was there for bariatric surgery, but I didn't let it bother me. I knew the one they had waiting for me wouldn't fit. The nurses and anesthesiologist were really awesome, but so very busy. It sometimes took as long as 20 minutes before my buzz was answered and I'm the sort that only buzzes when absolutely necessary. I was so glad that I had a private room. My mom was very impressed with the hospital and the nurses all fell in love with my son. Overall I'd say my experience was very pleasant. I just wish the nurses weren't so busy. Being in a hospital isn't conducive to rest but having a private room made it easier.
Comprehensive Surgical Specialist Group that Dr. David Martin is with, uses this hospital.
Competitors:
The Pre-operative testing and Post Operative support group is excellent. They were very informed on the procedure and treated me with great respect. The entire staff from the Xray technicians to the doctors were very supportive.
Comments:
I would recommend the hospital because they have an entire program dedicated to the support and care of Bariatric patients. The staff did everything in their power to make me feels that I made the best decision and they wanted me to know they were very supportive of me. The room was bright, roomy and clean. I had a private room. I never had to press the call button because they nursing staff checked on me every half hour. They wanted to be sure I had everything I needed.
I was allowed to have as many visitors as I wanted. I only stayed overnight but it was a great experience.
The only other hospital I have ever been in is in the Antelope Balley & in comparison AVH sucks.
Comments:
I find this to be the BEST hospital i have ever stayed in. Almost all the rooms are private, the staff was wonderful & even my mom & husband said that the cafeteria has the best food they have ever taste. If you are having your surgery in the hospital, rest assure you are in good hands!
