How Selected: Insurance would not pay unless it was at this hospital
Competitors: It was ok. There is a special Bariatric Hospital that only does bariatric surgery. If you are self pay or if your insurance will pay for it I would say go there. I think it's called Foundation Bariatric Hospital.
Comments: Most of the Nursre's were great. The major problrems I had were with this one night shift nurse. He was an older guy and he just seemed to not want to be there. It took him forever to assess me and whenever I called for help it took him 30 minutes or more to finally make it to my room. I did have a couple of nurses that were really great. Everybody else was OK.

Comments: I felt that if my husband had not been allowed to stay with me I would not have received the medical attention that I needed. Most of the time he had to go in search of nursing staff to get any assistance at all. We are encouraged to walk after surgery in hallway and around nurses station which while I was there was loaded down with cookies and candies. I felt this was very insensitive to post surgery patients, but ESP WLS. The menu (that I was not given any choices on) had sugar in the drinks and caffenated ice tea (ouch). Housekeeping was barely done if at all. Blood draws were horrible and they never could find anyone that could do it without stabbing and digging. Overall not a good experience. There were a couple of wonderful nurses on the pm/night shift, but most were busy with something else somewhere else.

How Selected: This is where my surgeron performs his surgeries.
Comments: There were a couple of nurses that I was very impressed with, Cynthia and Stephanie, and there was one LVN that I can't remember the name of that I liked. Everyone else was either just average or below average as far as bedside manner. I kind of felt like most of the nursed did just what was required and thats it. I guess at least they did that and were not negligent.

How Selected: Dr. Stegemann selected the hospital, not me.
Competitors: This hospital would be very comparable to other hospitals in the area.
Comments: My only complaint about my visit was the bed!! It was HORRIBLE - just a regular hospital bed and it was SO very uncomfortable. I couldn't wait to get home to get comfortable. Nursing care was excellent and the hospital discharge process was OUTSTANDING!!! I was home by 9:00 a.m. after the physician discharged me at 6:00 a.m. Never, ever had discharge go so quickly or smoothly!!

Competitors: All hospitals have their problems, but since this hosp. deals with obesity problems, it needs help.
Comments: This hosp. cannot seem to afford a large BP cuff for large people, nor a trapeze to make movement easier. Personnel needs to be more aware of their duties and refrain from attitude. ( this does not apply to all by any means). I had a patient stop by and ask me if I had bypass surgery, as she also had the same and just wanted information on how she was suppose to feel..maybe there should be some optional communication of some kind if a patient want to compare how they are feeling with another patient who would be willing to share their feelings and experiences....sorry these were not all upbeat comments, I don't like to complain, but just had to get this off my chest....OK>>>I FEEL BETTER NOW!

Comments: I was on the 5th floor of this hospital. Although, the nurses were very nice if my husband hadn't been there I don't know what I would have done. When I called the nurses to help me to the bathroom they either came an hour later or never came at all. My husband had to always help me unplug my IV and my leggings and oxygen. I had a JP drain tube and the pain ball and when I first got up to take a shower the nurse's aid wouldn't help. She said my husband could do it. Needless to say, my husband is very screamish and I didn't know how I was suppose to bathe and wash my hair while holding my JP tube and my Pain Ball. My husband got very upset and report the nurse's aide. My husband got me a an old TARGET bag and tied Dental Floss around it and taped some rubber gloves around the top of the bag so I could put it on my neck and carry the pain ball and the JP drain. I couldn't stayed home and got better care.

Competitors: I have had (counting this one) 4 surguries. All in different hospitals. Methodist Specialty and Transplant blows all the others out of the water!!
Comments: Thank you to all the nurses and aides that assisted me. Hats off to all of you. You went above and beyond my expectations of my hospital stay.

How Selected: Selected for me by surgeon's office
Competitors: Better staff, better facilities, especially for bariatrics
Comments: Overall my stay was fine. There were some of the PCA (nurse assistants) that were a problem, but the majority of the nursing staff was kind and helpful and good at answering questions and keeping in contact with the surgeon. There were some technical difficulties with their call system which caused some problems, but other than that, it was as enjoyable as a hospital stay can be I'd say :)

How Selected: It is the hospital where my surgeon has his clinic for pre-op patients. I really liked it because it is small and felt more comfortable.
Competitors: Sorry to say, it far exceeds any Corpus Christi hospital I have been in.
Comments: I would recommend it. They do good work. However, my surgeon is about to open a new state-of-the-art bariatic hospital in San Antonio around October this year.

How Selected: Didn't have a choice. Dr Pilcher works out of this hosp. and Southwest Methodist and at the time it was more equiped for the Lap procedure.
Competitors: I have not had a bad experience at any of the hospitals in the area and I've been to NE Baptist, NE Methodist, SW Methodist and this hosp.
Comments: I felt I was well taken care of in all aspects. When I was in ICU, they were especially attentive to my needs and out on the surgery floor, not any problems that over-shadowed anything. Very busy staff but not neglectful at all.

How Selected: One of the hospitals my surgeron uses. I was given a choice between the two hospitals but I chose to have it at the one where it could be scheduled the earliest.
Competitors: Like night and day difference (for the better) from the hospital I had a lap chole at a few years ago. That hospital was part of a different system of hospitals and I will never go to one of their hospitals again.
Comments: The nurses were friendly, attentive and responded to my needs in a reasonable amount of time. I had a relatively minor complication on the night of surgery and that did require a great deal of their time for a couple of hours. They were great. When I could do things for myself I did. Speeds along recovery anyway :). Only had a problem with one RT.
