Comments: Overall, I would say I had an excellent experience. Pre-operative preparations went very smoothly, surgery and recovery were excellent. I had some arrythmia's during recovery and the decision was made for me to stay overnight for observation in a monitored bed. However, this bed was not on the bariatric unit. So while the general care in th telemetry unit was excellent, it was geared towards the needs of a "heart" pt and not necessarily to the needs of a post-op bariatric patient. The staff was not necessarily aware of the specialized requirements of the post-op bariatric diet etc as it was not a specialized bariatric unit.

How Selected: My clinic, Park Nicollet, has their bariatric team/staff here.
Comments: My last night was a nightmare with 3 of the nursing staff regarding my pain medications and helping me with my needs. Basically I was denied pain medication and completely ignored as far as getting help to get up to use the bathroom, walk the hallways, change my IV...need I go on? A formal complaint was made at patient relations. It sure would be nice to hear if the nurses involved were reprimanded or not.

How Selected: My provider is part of the Park Nicolett system and so is Methodist Hospital. I also volunteered at the hospital and new of its qualities.
Competitors: Methodist has its qualities as do the other hospitals. However, I feel that their bariatric services far exceed any of the other hospital's or bariatric clinics. They have high ethics and standards.
Comments: I had never had to stay over night in a hospital but have had many friends and family who have. Going into the surgery I had many concerns regarding how good my hospitalization would be. However, I was pleasently suprised because staying at methodist was nice, not uncomfortable (besides surgery related pains), mostly quiet, food was delicious (broth and jello... yum) Everyone was so nice and nonjudgemental. I was impressed and was even hesitant to go home.

How Selected: Based upon several info sessions in the twin cities, I chose the PNC program. I chose Dr. Svendsen at Methodist because of his remarkable reputation.
Competitors: I've only ever been to Regions ER in the twin cities, and as far as I can tell, I believe the hospitals are comparable. Although, I dont believe Regions is completely equiped for the obese patient.
Comments: Methodist has a wonderful bariatric surgery program, with the best surgeons in the metro. The rooms/beds/everything is VERY accommodating to obese people. The bariatric program has its own wing where you meet other post-ops taking their walks down the hall. The nurses on the floor were GREAT! My only complaint is the care I received in the recovery room. I was in terrible pain, and the nurse attending me 'bribed' me with getting out of recovery sooner (to see my family) if I didn't take any more pain meds in recovery. So I suffered... Only to be transfered to my room, where my family wasn't even notified until three hours later when I woke up asking where they were. The RECOVERY NURSE had FORGOTTEN to page them to let them know they could see me in my room (needless to say they were pretty worried by that time too)! I was pretty upset about that, in fact, 14 months later, it still burns me. I was desparate to have a dark quiet recovery experience, and instead all the nurses were standing around talking about the fall invasion of the ladybugs! I wanted so bad to shout to them to shut the F*** up, and now wish I would have. My recovery room experience would never deter me from having surgery with Dr. S....honestly, after much research, it is my opinion he is the best surgeon in the city.

How Selected: Methodist is a Park Nicollet hospital and I use a Park Nicollet General Practioner as my regular doctor. It work better to stay in the same program.
Competitors: It was much better than I thought it would be. I know the rooms in Unity are wonderful, but Methodist's rooms were comfortable, just not too comfortable for an overnight visitor.
Comments: The greatest gift from the hospital was to allow my sister to stay with me all 3 nights. The 1st night because there were complications and the other 2 nights because I just didn't want to be alone. The nursing staff really took care to make sure she understood everything they were doing and didn't dismiss her. They also fed her. That was cool!

How Selected: Went to a Park Nicollet Meeting and signed up with their program as my Regular Dr was a Park Nicollet member
Comments: The first night was not good, I didn't get any rest, I had one nurse who liked to use "my" room to do her work for other patients and to come in every 15 minutes to tell me what was going to happen next, this got very bothersome. My next shift nurse "Lori Andreson, RN" was fabulous, she had a wonderful bedside manner and really new what she was doing for the bariatric patients, She was the best ever!!!! She made my stay worth it the night before.

How Selected: This is the hopsital my primary care clinic is affiliated with.
Comments: Parking for visitors can get spendy. I can't judge the fit or items for overweight patients very well because I'm not as large as alot of GBP patients. Things for appropriately sized for me. The nurses in the hopsital were excellent and very responsive when asked for pain medication. They were understanding in that my husband works 3rd shift so sometimes he wanted to visit outside of "official" visiting hours. My experience allowed me a private room and a very restful stay.

Competitors: Far superior
Comments: Methodist works in conjunction with physicans and program from Park Nicollett Medical Center. The program is wonderful and the hospital is state of the art. All of the staff were pleasant, helpful and seemed genuinely concerned for my welfare. They took the time to answer questions and made sure I was offered time to ask questions. The hospital room was so nice, I would love to stay there for a weekend!!

How Selected: I went through the bariatric program provided by the clinic I usually go to. This was the hospital that they complete the surgeries at.
Competitors: I really liked Methodist. The staff was very kind and I loved the fact that they provided me and my fiance with a private room for recovery. That really helped me overcome discomfort and helped me feel more at ease.

How Selected: This hospital is accepted by my insurance program and it is close to my home. Sfter beginning the bariatric program and meeting other WLS patients, I felt very comfortable that I was at the best program in the area.
Competitors: I didn't have to share a room. I've heard others have.
Comments: My nurses were FANTASTIC, I couldn't be any happier than I was. I was really disappointed in my nighttime nurse aids. One, Joseph, checked on me by turning on my room lights and waking me, whereas the others turned on a bathroom light to keep the light dimmer. Another night nurse's aid, (Angela?) answered my call. I asked her for pain medication, she said the nurse would have to get it for me, then she never told the nurse I needed medication. I waited more than a half hour before I buzzed them again, the nurse came, and I told her what happened. These were my only real disappointments.

I don't have anything negative to say about the hospital or the staff.
