Competitors: I would say this is the best hospital staff I have ever had. From the very beginning when I walked through the door, to the nurse that put my IV in, Anesthisiologist and Dr.'s The nursing staff was top notch! They were positive and incouraging to help my recovery. They were always there whenever I asked for something and never complained once about any of my requests. To the time I left where the guard was going to help me with getting into my car. These people were top notch!

Comments: This is a great hospital and the obesity staff are well informed, supportive and state of the art in terms of knowledge and having the right tools for everyone. I LOVE THE STAFF. THEY ARE WONDERFUL AND THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID. But the room sizes are horrific. There is no room for more than one visitor, for a chair, for even the equipment. Every time I had to go urinate, I had to get up and reach around my bedside table to unplug my IV, tangling wires. It was quite a chore just to urinate. The rooms are really for one patient not two. My roommate was a very sick woman who did not use the bathroom, so it was fortunate in that we did not have colliding bathroom schedules, but there was a problem with the urine. No one was collecting data, so my "hat" was often filled and waiting. It got to the point where I took the measure and emptied it myself. All this may sound trivial but living it after having had surgery was less than what I had expected, particularly because this is supposedly a "magnet" hospital. I was very fortunate in that I had no complication and only one visitor. Had I needed other equipment or had I had one other visitor it would have been a terrible mess.

Competitors: I felt that I received top notch care at Middlesex Hospital.
Comments: My hospital experience was pleasant from the very nice lady who registered me until the nurse who escorted me to my car at the end of my stay. Dr. Aranow did a fantastic job, and the nursing staff kept me comfortable. They were quick with responding to my pain and were willing to try different combinations of pain killers until I found one that I felt comfortable with. The entire staff was so supportive of my decision to have the surgery and were very encouraging. I had a single room which was small but comfortable. The only down side to my stay were two very noisy patients next door. Even then the nursing staff did their best to keep me comfortable and resting quietly. I am so very pleased with the level of care I received!!!

Competitors: I deal with many hospitals in my profession I have always found Middlesex to provide good nursing care. Staff did a great job with washing hands (always a concern to prevent infection). Very attentive to pain issues.
Comments: Only negative comment would be that they provide TED stockings that are only XL which then they had to cut to fit me, which defeated the whole purpose. They need to stock bigger size TEDs.

Competitors: First hospital I've been a patient in a very long time.
Comments: Very positive experience. Esp. the experienced & compassionate 4th floor nursing staff. Couldn't wish for a nicer bunch of folks to take care of you. The comprehensive pre-op orientation given by the nursing staff is a real plus in getting your head in the right place prior to your surgery Did'nt care for the special bariatric bed since it wasn't designed to be easily operated by patient. More comfortable in recliner.

Competitors: I found Middlesex Hospital to be fabulous for bariatric surgery. I had wonderful nurses that were very caring and knowledgable.

How Selected: I selected this hospital because my surgeon,Dr. Aranow, works through it. He also has a nice bariatric program setup at the hospital so the staff is trained to deal with bariatric patients and they also do provide larger equipment if needed, which is nice.
Competitors: I haven't been to many hospitals, but overall my stay wasn't bad. The interior of the hospital is nice,it isn't old or run-down. Some of the nurses and staff were very pleasant and nice, but there were definately staff there that shouldn't be in the medical field dealing with patients anymore! There were multiple times that I buzzed for help and no one came-what if I had been having trouble breathing or something serious? I found I had to remind the staff when it was times for my pain meds and my vitals were sometimes forgotten. I was always waiting for help when I needed it,but I guess all hospitals are under-staffed now!
Comments: I'd say the staff was 50/50-some were very nice and helpful, others could've cared less and it was like prying teeth to get them to even do something simple like getting a cup of water! My room was very nice though, and there were many times I felt truly cared for by some of the staff-you know they're good when you're morbidly obese and don't feel shamful when they're helping you shower! I did like that the staff seemed very skilled with gastric bypass patients,so I did feel I was always in good hands for the most part. But they definately need to keep a closer eye on the patients in my opinion, but I guess that's probably due to under-staffing. I know there were times when I'd buzz for help and no one came. My boyfriend often times had to go down to the nurses station to get someone, and even then there were times we were still waiting forever for someone to come! But don't be worried if you're going to stay here, overall it was decent-you just have to be an advocate for yourself and SPEAK UP!

Competitors: Very Good. Modern and Clean.
Comments: The hospital is set up to accomodate bariatric patients well..from having oversized gowns and binders to bariatric beds and private rooms for all bariatric patients...they also have a nurse on the bariatric floor who had WLS. While it suffers from the same issues many hospitals do (not enough staff, sometimes overworked staff) overall, they are exceptionally well equipped for the needs of a WLS patient.

How Selected: This hospital was closest to my work but I had researched many surgeons and this is where My surgeon I picked worked out from.
Comments: Hospitals are not the greatest place to be in the first place. I will say overall the staff was very pleasant. I had a couple bad seeds but overall did not change that I would go back there again. Just pray you don't need anything in a hurry when they are in the middle of a change of shift because it's hard to get someone. I also had a good friend who stayed with me everynight at the hospital so she was there to help me in most tasks if needed so I didnt need to bother the nursing staff as much as I would have if alone.

My very picky, nurse-by-profession sister, who was with me in the hospital, was extremely impressed. I absolutely loved my nurses!

Comments: Except for the bothersome routine 'vital signs checkups' in the middle of the night, my stay at Middlesex was excellent. The staff was totally into my needs and making sure I was comfortable, moving around, and when I needed quiet time, they would just let me sleep. When I wanted to get up at 4am to walk, they'd ask me if I needed assistance; when I needed a shower, they'd help me from dress down to dress up! I was truly blessed. They are awesome!

Comments: I work at the hospital and was on a safety committee for employees. Attending these meetings I got to hear first hand how the hospital was trying to make a more positive change to help handle Dr. Ananow's patients. Many meetings were used to discuss the problems the staff had with the equipment and the patients. This definitely became a good forum because as far as I know they ordered new beds and the staff underwent training on how to use them.

I can't help but mention the few (and I mean very few) who were unpleasant.. I believe if you choose a field where your job is to aid and comfort the ill you should be able to do it kindly.. it takes no longer to accomplish something with a good attitude as a with a bad..

Comments: I gave excellent to good ratings above, but I want to point out that these ratings only apply to the bariatric floor that I was on--the ICU was not as understanding or professionally trained for bariatric patients--it was like night and day from ICU to bariatric unit, there I saw smiling faces and fantastic care and support--all of the nurses were so attentive and caring. They did not make me feel like I was a pain the the ass to take care of.

Competitors: Compared to the hospital that I work in, I found this one to be less busy, and far less attentive to their patients.
Comments: Unfortunately, I thought that the nurses who cared for me really didn't care at all (with the exception of "Patti"). Even the day of surgery I was asleep and "out of it" but my family members all said how disappointed they were that no one even came in to check up on me for hours...immediately after surgery. It took a while for the nurses to answer call lights (all of them I noticed as I walked the halls) and some even seemed bothed by my requests for pain meds or other items. Once I complained, this attitude changed quickly toward me.

How Selected: I chose this one for 2 reasons. It was close to my home, and my Doctor did his surgery there.
Competitors: They are all pretty much the same. They all need better parking and more staff.
Comments: The staff on first and second shift were great. They were helpful, caring, and pretty much there when you needed them. Third shift was a totally different thing. They were far and few, and when they did come in, were quick to do what they wanted, rather than what you asked for. I had an I.V. that beeped continous all night, keeping me awake, as well as my roomate. I tried to explain that it wasn't working properly, as evidenced by the fact that the volume was not going down and the beeping was indicating a problem, but they would just hit the reset button and leave. They'd no sooner be out the door and it would start beeping again. If I called them again, it would be a long time before they would return. Finially on the next day, first shift found the problem. the shunt had broken under the skin line, and was not letting any fluid pass. That is why it was beeping, and why I was dehydrating. It all got fixed on first shift. Then the next night I asked the 3rd shift to please keep the door closed after they did vitials, because the lit up hallway kept my area of the room very bright, and I couldn't sleep with all the light. Never failed, when they did rounds, they would go out and leave the door open. So, I'd ring to ask them to come and close the door, and they got all pissy because they had to come back just to close a door. Yet, next round--same thing!
