About this Hospital
 |
|
Mills-Peninsula’s Obesity Surgery Program is designed to help people who are significantly overweight (more than 100 pounds) and who have tried more traditional weight reduction methods withoutsuccess. About 75 percent of our patients achieve weight loss of 50 percent of their total pre-operative weight within 18–24 months after surgery.
Our program provides not only surgery but a complete package of services that brings together professional expertise to help you achieve the best long-term benefit – weight loss for life.
Why choose us?
As a comprehensive health care organization, Mills-Peninsula offers all the services you need to make your obesity surgery a success.
Mills-Peninsula is conveniently located near the San Francisco International Airport, with access to discounted hotel accommodations for Obesity Program participants and their families.
About the program
The decision to have obesity surgery involves significant life changes. According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, long-term success depends not just on the surgical procedure but also on availability of services that support you in making permanent changes in diet, fitness and emotional well-being.
That’s why Mills-Peninsula’s program includes expert nutrition counseling, a menu of fitness choices and behavioral health support. If you live in an area that isn’t convenient to take advantage of Mills-Peninsula programs, you should seek similar services in your community.
Insurance coverage for program components will depend on your individual health plan. In general, some will be covered and some may be self-pay.
Mills-Peninsula’s program includes:
-
The most advanced gastric bypass surgery available (known as Roux-en-Y). Depending on individual patient condition and needs, most cases can be performed laparoscopically;
-
Minimally invasive, adjustable Lap-Band procedure that uses a silicone band to restrict food intake;
-
Individualized care coordination throughout the program by a registered nurse program specialist;
-
Nutrition counseling and education;
-
Monthly patient support groups, workshops and classes to support long-term success;
-
Personal exercise program developed by an exercise physiologist, including options such as aquatic exercise;
- Individual psychological therapy, if needed.
The Mills-Peninsula team
Mills-Peninsula’s Obesity Surgery Program brings together a team of professionals to help you achieve your weight loss goals:
- Medical director: Provides program oversight.
- Nurse specialist/program coordinator: Meets with you and your family members before surgery to ensure that everyone has a good understanding of the procedure and what to expect afterward.
The nurse coordinator then follows your progress on a daily basis while you are in the hospital and is available by phone or e-mail to answer questions and provide support as you progress through the other program components.
- Surgeons: Each of the Mills-Peninsula surgeons who performs obesity surgery not only has expert technical skills but also a thorough understanding of obesity as a medical condition, its physical and psychological challenges as well as associated disease risks.
- Registered dieticians: Meet with you before surgery to discuss necessary dietary changes. They visit while you are in the hospital to review immediate postoperative diet restrictions and continue to provide support and education as needed after discharge.
- Exercise physiologist or aquatic exercise specialist: Provides an evaluation and designs an individualized exercise program. The program also includes membership in the Mills-Peninsula Fitness Center and use of the indoor pool facility.
- Psychologist or psychiatrist: Provides an evaluation before surgery is scheduled to determine if there are psychological issues that might interfere with successful outcomes after surgery. Members of our mental health team also are available to provide continued therapy after surgery, if desired.
- Support groups: Mills-Peninsula conducts a monthly obesity surgery support group the first Saturday of each month (holidays excluded). The groups meet at Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame, in the Sierra Rooms on the ground floor.
- A preoperative informational meeting meets 9:30–10 a.m. A postoperative open session meets from 10–11:30 a.m. A long-term session meets at noon to address specific needs of patients one year or more beyond surgery and frequently features guest lecturers.
What are the benefits?
- People who lose at least 50 percent of excess weight report increased energy, endurance and ability to enjoy physical activities. There is usually significant improvement in back and joint pain.
- Significant decrease in the risk of heart disease, and often improved blood pressure in people with hypertension.
- Many people with obstructive sleep apnea or respiratory problems experience marked improvement.
- The majority of patients with diabetes enjoy improvement in blood sugar control following major weight reduction, and many no longer require medication.
- Skin problems related to obesity usually resolve.
- Acid reflux symptoms (e.g., indigestion, heartburn) often improve or disappear.
What is obesity surgery?
There are several kinds of surgical procedures available to help people who are significantly overweight. By reducing the size of the stomach, these procedures restrict the amount of food you can consume.
Long-term success depends in large part on permanently following a restricted diet and making major lifestyle changes.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Mills-Peninsula offers the Roux-en-Y (roo-en-why) Gastric Bypass Procedure. This technique joins the stomach pouch to the small intestine and creates a Y-shaped intestinal junction.
Gastric bypass surgery should not be considered reversible.
Lap-Band procedure
The Lap-Band is an adjustable silicone band placed around the top part of the stomach during a laparoscopic surgical procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive than open incision surgery because it is performed by placing the instruments and a camera through several small incisions in the abdomen.
A small device called a port is placed under the skin. It is connected to the Lap-Band and allows the surgeon to periodically adjust the tightness of the band. The Lap-Band may be adjusted several times in the first six months after surgery to promote maximum weight loss without side effects.
Who is eligible?
You must be at least 100 pounds over your ideal weight as listed on the Metropolitan Life height/weight tables and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40. Body mass index is a tool that helps you determine whether your weight is appropriate for your height.
People with a BMI of 35–40 may be eligible if they have two or more diseases associated with obesity, such as diabetes, chronic obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease or arthritis.
The age range for obesity surgery is generally 18–60 years old, and it may be appropriate for some adolescents. People with substance abuse issues are not appropriate candidates, and current smokers are not eligible.
Will my insurance pay for obesity surgery?
Many health plans will cover this surgery if the person meets all requirements. For example, you must be able to document that you have tried to lose weight through conventional methods without lasting results. Contact your insurance company prior to making a consultation appointment.
We accept Medicare patients for evaluation who are referred by their own physician. We do not accept Medi-Cal for obesity surgery.
What do I do next?
- Contact the nurse program coordinator for an initial telephone consultation at 800.559.9960.
- The next step is scheduling a consultation appointment with a surgeon. We recommend you bring a family member or significant other, and come prepared to discuss past experience with conventional weight loss methods.
- After you have met with a surgeon, you will schedule an appointment for a mental health evaluation. Then, if you and your surgeon agree that obesity surgery is the right decision, you will enter the program, fully supported by our team to make this major life change.
- Once you are scheduled for surgery, you will be scheduled for a pre-admission testing appointment and classes with the inpatient dietitian and nurse specialist.

This hospital has a special bariactric unit that handles everything concerning the surgery. When I checked in to the surgery center a special bariacric bed was waiting for me to take me in to the operating room and through recovery and up to my room. This was the kind of excellent specialized service I received through out my stay. |

As far as I know the hospital is average compared to other hospitals. |
| Comments: |
I have a few complaints:
1. It seemed as though the nurses were slightly slow to respond at times. Some didn't seem to care or comunicate well. Maybe they were short staffed.
2. My phone didn't work.
3. They took away the toilet seat raiser and handles which forced me to hurt myself.
4. Had to beg for anti nausea medicine. |

| I was required, by my imsurance, to pick a surgeon who performed out of a hospital that had been designated a Bariatric Center of Excellence. Mills Penninsula is the closest one to where I live-I couldn't have been happier with the outcome. |
| Competitors: |
The staff at Mills Penninsula is really friendly and personable. The day of my pre-op a nurse walked me to the surgery center so that I would know exactly where to go on the morning of surgery, she even walked me out to the back parking lot to show me where I could be dropped off. It is just such a nice gesture to take the time to do that for thier patients. Also I was given the option of free participation in guided imagery before my surgery to assist in recovery and pain management, I think that it is great to acknowledge and offer alternative forms of treatment. |
| Comments: |
All around a really great experience! I live in a small town and I am used to the hospital here, I was worried that by going to one in a larger metropolitan area I would encounter a less human environment- that was not the case at all. Every person I encountered, from the CNAs to the Nurses, to the Radiologist, to the Dieticians were kind, helpful and very friendly. |

The whole stay was great. The parking was poor as they are renovating the site. They are in the process of building a new parking structure, which my nurse told me will have the new hospital on top of it. The current hospital isn't up to present day earthquake standards and I guess it would cost too much to retrofit it, if they could. The new hospital is supposed to be open sometime in 2010. The old one is gorgeous, I am anxious to see what the new one will look like. |

The only other hospital I have been in is California Pacific Medical Center for a C-Section almost 15 years ago. It was comparable. The nursing staff is excellent in both hospitals. |
| Comments: |
The bariatric unit is mixed in with the ortho patients. They do this because the nurse's are skilled (working with IV's and narcotics) and such. I think they spent a lot of time thinking about the bariatric patient. It is quite evident. |

Most staff was really good, however they were a few nurses that had no clue about pain meds, or my gastric bypass surgery. For example on day one I had a non bariatric nurse that didn't want to give me my pain pump meds as I needed it. The hospital got her off the floor the next day as she was not a bariatric nurse. Also a couple of nurses had now idea how to work the bariatric bed that I had. The head nurse and bariatric coordinator were great and fixed any issued I had. |

About the same. It would have gotten a good evaluation from me except for the nursing staff and the noise. I was also never on the Bariatric floor but on two separate floors and two separate rooms. Maybe would have been different if I was on the proper floor. I think they should limit the bariatric surgeries to the number of rooms they have avaiable on that floor. |
| Comments: |
The nursing staff spoke poor english and so was difficult to communicate with them, except for the charge nurse. I was given too much pain medication and was hallucinating. My daughter said the nursing staff was unconcerned and would not call the doctor. Wound care was good but the rest was horrid. |

Great hospital, I wouldn't spend my vacation there, but if I ever need a hospital again, I'd gladly go to Mills. My wife had one complaint... she is 1.5 years RNY post op... the cafeteria had just about nothing for her to eat, she had to go off campus to eat. But I was sleeping so it didn't bother me that she got out and got some fresh air and food. |

The staff seem intimidated by my surgeon, so if you feel the surgeon needs to be contacted, force the issue. |

This hospital was wonderful..Where I live we have 2 and they do not have good reputations,but they are not bariatric hospitals either. |

This hospital was very nice.I had a private room,nurses didn't bother me at all.They would check on me and wait for me to be awake before doing b/p and other things needed...My stay was WONDERFUL.All of the nurses where GREAT!! |

| This is where my surgeon practices. She also practices at El Camino Hospital, which was my preference, but my insurance would not let me go there because my primary care physician is with Camino Medical Group and they send their patients to Mills Peninsula. |

I haven't really stayed overnight at other hospitals, but this one was clean and the staff made sure I had my meds on time, a little slow at answering the call light sometimes though but not all the time, probably happens everywhere anyways. Overall it was a good experience with the staff and facility. |

Very noisy. I was close to the nurses station but it seemed like they were yelling across the floor to communicate with each other, also there was a really loud screeching and thumping coming from the floor above me (they said was a cafeteria) but everytime they made that noise I would jump in the bed and it would hurt my stomach. The staff was very nice and helpful, no bad experiences there. |

| It is where my doctor works out of. In all fairness I know numerous people who have had surgery there and they were more than happy with their care. However for myself I was only given 1 gown change in the 2 1/2 days I was there and I was never even given a cloth to wash my face! I also had one night nurse that fell asleep! and another who keep commenting on why she didn't know why I had this surgery since she lost 150lbs by walking! Not what I wanted to hear at that moment. |

Poor. The nursing staff were judgemental, slow to respond to requests for pain medication, did not follow proper follow up routine ie dangling evening of surgery then ambulation. The night nurse had to ambulate me at 0400 the day following surgery as this was the only time she had to do it as the evening shift did not do it. |

I would say my stay was great. I got a little emotional the day after surgery, ran into a couple staff people that didn't seem very caring. BUT, my night nurse was an angel!!! MaryLou, I love you! You made me feel special and cared for. |

Though I reminded staff that wanted my door closed and that they should knock they basically tried to ignore me and I had to seek the assistance of Patient services. |
| Comments: |
I rated them good overall, because I stopped breathing 3-4 times. My husband was there to revive me and the hospital plan was geared to ensure the survival of patients who underwent this surgery. However: the racism was palpable, horrible food, I could not wait to get the heck out of their. |
