How Selected: I was told the top Bariatric surgeons were at Hershey and Dr. Rogers is the director and head of RNY , so I wanted her.
Competitors: The only other Hospital I was admitted to was Womens and Babies Hospital In Lancaster PA. That hospital was amazing and your room was like you were at a resort. I never wanted to go home. Hershey was nice when I was in Intensive care room. When I was transfered to my "normal room" it was "eh"
Comments: I like the hospital over all because they have great doctors. If I had to choose a hospital for 1 main reason it is to have the best doctor which to me is what I had. I can deal with the rooms, or the attitudes. The doctors ability is whats most important.

How Selected: Surgical weight loss program is very comprehesive and certainly seems to be the best in central PA.
Competitors: Facility is better than average for the area. Surgical staff seems much better than average for the area. Support staff seems average for the area.
Comments: Hershey Medical is a teaching hospital for Penn State University. As such the operations of the facility run a little differently than other local, non-teaching hospitals. However, the scope of resources of a large institution, along with the depth of knowledge of the Drs made me incredibly comfortable having surgical weight loss at this facility.

How Selected: My PCP recommended it, and I went on his recommendation.
Competitors: Hershey Medical Center has private rooms only. This is wonderful! The last thing you want to worry about during this surgery is a noisy room mate!
Comments: In my opinion, the nurses were not very well educated about Gastric Bypass. Several tried to give me regular sodas, sugared ice creams, etc. They actually got annoyed when I told them I could not eat these things. Several nurses asked me to explain what a Gastric Bypass was... one nurse thought it was a heart bypass. Parking was horrible - my parents had to pay to park when they came to visit me, and the parking was very far away! I understand that they have stopped charging for parking now... guess my complaining paid off! HA HA
