Competitors: This was 100X better than Mease Countryside, that hospital made me change my own sheets and everything!
Comments: When I woke up in recovery the nurses were very attentive. They checked on me constantly. Then I was moved into ICU for about a day and 1/2. The ICU nurses were awesome! The one nurse that I had for the majority of the time was there for any little thing that I needed, walked with me constantly, sat and talked with me any free chance she had. I felt like I was in amazing hands! When I got moved into my regular room, the nurses there were just as friendly! They came by to offer me new drinks in case I was tired of what I had, offered me popsicles, and even came back to say hello the following day when they weren't my assigned nurse anymore. I had an amazing experience! I loved the staff, and actually get a smile on my face when I think of the people who were taking care of me during my stay.

Competitors: I had never been to the hospital before so I can only judge this hostital
Comments: It would have been nice that GB patient be taken to a private room rather than having the option of a standard or private room. The beds are larger for the patient however it takes up a lot of room in a standard room when you have 2 patients in the room. I also noticed that the whole time I was in the hospital I was extremely hot. The staff brought in a box fan which helped tremendously but again because of the larger bed there wasn't alot of room to walk around.

How Selected: While my surgical team was excellent, the hospital was not great. In fact I would have to say that of the five times throughout my life that I have been hospitalized, this was the worst experience. The nursing staff in the ICU was awful as was the floor staff with a single exception. My real issue was with the anesthesiology team - the doctor who placed my main line in particular. That was the worst part of the entire surgery experience. In this area, I would highly recommend having surgery done at Mease Countryside rather than the downtown hospital.
Competitors: Mease Countryside (owned by the same network) is leaps and bounds above regardnig quality of inpatient care.
Comments: I will definitely avoid Morton Plant downtown from here on out.

How Selected: The doctor does his surgeries there so I had little options. It was a 45 minute drive from home, but well worth it according to my family because the local hospital (1 mile from me) could not have done near as well!
Competitors: 50x better than my local hospital
Comments: Staff was attentive and caring and I appreciated all but one of them!!

Comments: After surgery, I had to stay in the recovery room for 27 hours because there were no rooms available. I must say that turned out for the best. The recovery staff were totally on to my needs the entire time. I need only ask and they were there and when I didn't ask, they were tending to my needs constantly. I can't say enough about how attentive they were.

Comments: They gave me medication I was alergic to , never checked on me , I had to drain my own little bads sometimes, the bathroom was so small that my IV pulled out trying to get in and out, they gave me jello with sugar and I am diabetic anf then when I complained they never brought me water or pro-stat or anything. I left after 2 days post opp( even though my doctor wanted me to stay 5) because I was swelling from the alergic reactions. The nurses were not educated on how to handle us the rooms were small and hard to get around.. I will never go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How Selected: At the time I got my surgery, this was the only hospital my surgeon was currently performing Bariatric Surgery at. I would have preferred to go to Largo Medical Center, as it's closer to my home, and more convenient to get in and out of for friends and family.
Competitors: It's your average older public hospital. There are hodge podge corridors, decorating, lighting, and other issues that arise from additions and construction planning.
Comments: I was glad to have my husband stay with me, as after I left the ICU I barely saw a nurse for the next 36 hours. There were tons of nursing aide students coming in at all hours of the day to check my blood sugars, which was annoying and unnecessary, since I was NOT a diabetic, NOR was I eating. My PCA and fluids IV line blew my vein, and I complained about it several times and nobody would remove it until I threatened to remove it myself - my arm was swollen up like a tree trunk. The staff were not educated about what I could and could not have to drink and only offered my crystal light, in the same flavor that I happened to mix with my Go-Lytely a few days before, so I couldn't even stand the smell or color of it. It is my understanding, however, that since my surgery this hospital has undertaken creating a bariatric program and educated their staff on the needs of bariatric patients, as well as purchasing bariatric equipment. I applaud this move.

How Selected: This hospital was the only one used by my surgeon.
Competitors: I am very familiar with other local hospitals as several family members have worked in them. Morton Plant was very nice. It was familiar with my surgeon and the needs of a bypass patient.
Comments: The recovery room was by far the worst part. The nurse was rude and felt the need to lay on me instead of asking another nurse to help place my binder. Otherwise everyone was very nice.

Competitors: I would say there is none. My care was excellent. The nursing staff was wonderfull.
Comments: I can't say anything bad about my experience at Morton Plant. The staff was caring, sweet, understanding, encouraging, and very helpfull. I had excellent care. They made sure I was comfortable in every way. The only negative thing I can say was the volunteer that came up with a wheelchair at discharge. She was very rude and express the fact that she did not like it when they send her to wheel down an obese person. She even brought up a wheelchair for a normal size person and was upset with the fact that she was not told that I was obese. She stated that they need to send a man to wheel fat people around. Other then her rudeness everybody was awesome.

How Selected: Where my doctor does surgery.
Competitors: Could be cleaner, never had anyone clean the room while I was in the hospital. Was in 5 days. They empty garbage and take you dirty linens after your daughter has changed the bed for you.
Comments: Could not get a message out to my family and was not given an important message left with the nurses station while in ICU-"you're too sick in ICU to use a phone" is what I was told, despite walking all over the unit. On regular floor private room which I requested was great, accommodated my daughter with a cot. If it weren't for her staying with me it would have been disasterous. Because you don't receive a tray from dietary during meal times, not once did anyone offer me post op liqs on diet nor ice when I was on reg floor. Recommend priv room (costs extra) and a caregiver to be with you around the clock.
