How Selected: It was the hospital my surgeon practiced out of.
Comments: A lof of the staff in the hospital did not understand the nature of my surgery. They kept telling me to disolve the crushed pain pills in my water and to drink it fast like a shot. You can't do that with surgery and they didn't seem to get that.

How Selected: Very ramdomly, but I'm glad I did.
Comments: The hosptial staff is very nice and extremely professional. I felt as if they really cared for me as an individual. I was a person, not a procedure. The only negative thing about my stay is that I was put in a room with three other people and one nurse who was nice enough but a very loud talker. Which is something you don't want to deal with at 3am. Giid thing I only stayed for two nights.

How Selected: Dr. Herron's is a Professor at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and he practices there.
Competitors: Mt. Sinai is one of thebest hospitals in the world, and has a wonderful staff and amazing equipment. When they wheeled me into the operating room that looked like it had enough equipment to perform heart transplants, I knew I would be fine.
Comments: I found the nurses and the other staff members to be really excellent. I always had the view that all city hospitals must be "dungeons" but that is not the case here. Everything was clean and well maintained, and the nurses all were very skilled. I was in a "step-down" unit after leaving the recovery room, a four bed room with a nurse on duty for those four patients 24 hours a day. Response to any needs was almost instantaneous. The only negative was the lack of privacy, and due to a shortage of beds each night that I was there a new patient was put in the bed next to me that were in different ways highly disruptive. One person was extremely ill and probably should not have been there, and the other two complained loudly all night that they did not find their accomodations "adequate." Of course it is a hospital not a hotel! I did not get much sleep. Dr. Herron visited twice a day, and his surgical resident was very nice. I had no problems with the interns on morning rounds. Overall the medical care was far exceeded what I was expecting and they did a great job.

How Selected: My plastic surgeon is the assistant professor of surgery at Mt. Sinai hospital so I went where he is affiliated.
Competitors: Mt. Sinai's quality of service has depreciated considerably in the last 10 years. I was very disappointed especially with the nursing and administrative staff.
Comments: The quality of care I received was sorely lacking and at times, quite scary. If it weren't for the fact that I had complete faith in my plastic surgeon, there is no way I would return to this hospital at the state it is currently in.

How Selected: It's pretty close to where I live and the surgicallyslim program seems well organized so I went with them
Comments: Too many damn interns. I saw a different one several times a day, people I didn't even know who they were asking me questions. The worst situation was when someone from my surgeon's "surgical team" came to check out my incisions and then about 6 of them (all men) came and were taking notes..there I am sitting there, my gown pulled up, the curtain open and being analyzed by several interns like a rat in a lab. Not cool. Also, my surgeon did not come by to see me, someone on his "surgical team" did. Also, I didn't like that the confusion that ensued when they moved me from one room to another. Long story, but I was annoyed.

Competitors: The medical staff is excellent. The nursing staff was horrible, looked right at me trying to get oob by myself and walked out of the room! Never given a basin to wash up, only one nurse even tried to help me wash the dye out of my mouth. One nurse wanted to put cold compresses on my swollen arm from an infiltrated IV. Warm compresses are used!
Comments: I would use the hospital again, but I would be more vocal & not attempt to do so much for myself, it wasn't worth the risk of injurying myself

Competitors: The care I recieved at this hospital was superb. I felt really cared for, and the nurses were awesome.
Comments: I do not regret one thing about going to this hospital. Overall it is a great place to be when you need to be taken good care of. The nurses were incredible. They were almost not human. I mean that in a good way. Not to often these days you find too many people with hearts of gold like the nurses who took care of me had. I want to take this moment to say thanks to nurses, Nancy, Angela, Anne, Jill, Mae, and Gwen. If I was taken care of by any others, and forgot to mention your name, I'm sorry, due to pain meds, part of my stay are cloudy. The nurses made me feel like I had my Mom right beside me 24/7. My Mom was home with my son, but these nurses made me feel like I had her right next to me. Very sweet, and caring, and never once did I hear them complaint. Thank you ladies.

How Selected: My surgeon is affiliated with them.
Competitors: I have not used any local hospitals, only the hospitals in Nashville, TN, which in my opinion are much more responsive to the patients needs.
Comments: I felt that they were understaffed. I had to wait HOURS for some things. I was in my room for 24 hours before my personal belongings were brought to me. I had to wait for 8 hours to get some Chloroseptic for my sore throat. My meals came late and were missing items. The nurses were sweet as can be, but just not responsive in a timely manner, leading me to believe that they were understaffed. I had a problem in the bathroom after my bowels started working and had to ring them 2 times and wait well over 5 minutes for help. Thank goodness it wasn't something serious! Needless to say, I did not like the care I received while there.

How Selected: My doctor was affliated with three hospitals. I chose this one based on their rating fron the board of health.
Competitors: I have not been in any other hospitals.
Comments: I received outstanding care while in the hospital. I was put into a stepdown unit which had only three beds for one nurse who was with me constantly for the five days. All the nurses and staff were compassionate and encouraging. I was not as thrilled with the residents. They seemed to be very conservative when it came to pain meds and not great in communicating to the patient. This is not a good thing. The body does not operate well under the stress of pain. If it wasn't for my mother correcting the situation, she is a nurse for over 30 yeasr, my recover would not have gone as well. I would recommend mt Sinai but as with any hospital situation it helps if you have an advocate who understands what is going on.

Competitors: Even thought I paid $475 EXTRA a day to be in the VIP wing, the medical attention was severly lacking and the staff was MISERABLE, LAZY and did not do anything without 5-6 requests. Even medically important things.
Comments: I will never go there again and would not recommend it to anyone. The unionized staff is sullen, rude and inattentive, providing only the most minimal care only after being repeatedly asked . I had to get the patient rights group at the hospital involved to even get rudimentary care!

How Selected: Mt. Sinai was the only hospital that Dr. Pomp did the surgery at.
Competitors: I do not live in the city so I cannot compare with other local hospitals.
Comments: When I first got to the hospital about 5:30am I had to wait a while to get registered. I went to a room and waited again for a few hours but they did nothing to me until I got into the OR around 11. The anesthesiologist put the IV in when I was in the OR and they put the Catheter in when I was under. The OR was huge and wasn't too cold, they put nice warm blankets on me anyway. The Anesthesiologists were wonderful and the whole OR staff was wonderful. They were telling me jokes. When I woke up in the recovery room I had horrible shoulder pain from the air that goes into your body from the Lap procedure. They gave me a shot of something that settled me down a bit. Then they hooked me up to the morphine drip that I hated. It drugged me up so much that I couldn't open my eyes but still felt the pain. Needless to say I came off that the day after surgery when the nurses couldn't wake me up because I was so drugged up. I was then put on Percaset. They had to be taken crushed up and were horrible so I opted not to have any pain meds. The gas was the biggest problem. Was up walking the next day but wanted to walk the night of the surgery but the nurses wouldn't let me. I also remember that my mouth was so dry that my tounge would stick to my lips whenever I spoke. Are ice chips all day and night. The day after surgery I was up walking slowly and eating pureed foods after my leak test. I had 3 C-sections so the pain wasn't any worse then that. Went home on day 4 because I was running a fever on day 3 for some unknown reason. My mother in law stayed with me the whole hospital stay because the nurses were so busy and I wanted to make sure that they didn't forget about me. I never called them, my mother in law would get whatever I needed from the nurses station. Was glad to finally go home.

Comments: The first morning after my surgery I woke up and after myself asking, my Dr., the anesthisiologist asking it took from 6 am to 1:30 pm to get pain medication, and medication for nausea ( I had dry heaves and if any of you know it's the worst pain post op). I think all the problems came from one bitchy, uncaring nurse. I had these problems and I had a friend staying in my room with me. It was only after I called an advocate from my surgeon's office that things started to roll. I have to say after that ,I didn't have any problems getting anything again, the nursing supervisor came in and apoligized, and after that for the rest of my 3 day stay everyone else was great. It was just unfortunate that this one nurse made my 1st day post op a nightmare.

How Selected: Thus was where my surgeon was affiliated at the time of my surgery.
Competitors: The nursing staff in this hospital was the worst I have ever encountered. Not only was the patient care awful, but it is pretty bad when the nursing staff has loud arguments in the hall outside the patients rooms, arguing about whose responsibility it was to take care of the patient. When the nurse would finally come in the room, they would have attitudes and or stand there rolling their eyes and not help. Cpap machines were in the room and were not hooked up for 24-36 hrs. My hospital gown was never changed because the nurse could not figure out how to get around the IV. It took approx. 40 minutes for a nurse to come unhook you from the leg compression boots so that you could go to the bathroom and then they refused to hook you up again saying "you will only have to get up again" It also took 48 hours for me to get my personal belongings- each day the staff would say it was the next shift. And I only did get my belongings after my sister went and insisted they get this immediately. Overall- this was the worst example of nursing care I have ever seen, or ever hope to see again.
Comments: If I ever need surgery again, I would never go to that hospital or I would be certain to hire outside nursing care.Overall, it was a horrible experience with a nursing staff that was incredibly negligent.
