Bariatric surgery has been offered at Munson Medical Center as a permanent weight loss solution for morbidly obese patients since August 2003. Outstanding outcomes, low complication rates, and faster recoveries resulted in Munson’s Bariatric Surgery program being designated as a Center of Excellence by Blue Cross of Michigan and Priority Health.
About 300 bariatric procedures are performed annually at Munson Medical Center. Munson offers Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and the LAP-BAND® procedure.
Patients considering weight loss surgery at Munson must undergo a rigorous screening process, beginning with a two-hour educational seminar. Munson’s Bariatric Surgery team consists of four board-certified, highly-skilled surgeons, all part of Grand Traverse Surgery, PC.
Comprehensive after care is a cornerstone of Munson’s bariatric program. Patients commit to a lifetime of follow-up care, including adherence to guidelines on diet, exercise, and vitamin supplements. Physicians provide continued monitoring and bariatric patients receive tremendous encouragement and comfort by meeting with other patients who have undergone weight loss surgery at Munson. In addition to patient-to-patient support, behaviorists, dietitians, and other specialists help patients make permanent, positive lifestyle changes.
Munson is a 391-bed regional referral center for northern Michigan, and has gained a national reputation for outstanding patient care. Munson has been named a Top 100 Hospital nine times, more than any other hospital in Michigan, and has earned the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence, placing its nursing staff in the top 3 percent in the nation.

Plus, this was the only hospital in Northern Michigan that my insurance would cover for wls. |

| I heard adds on the radio about their bariatric program. I attended an informational seminar, and then looked into who my surgeon might be.

I would say they are top rate. I felt that maybe I wouldn't be taken seriously because I answered excellent to the questions above, but I couldn't say less. |

It was very pleasant. I felt pampered by the nurses and the staff who cared for me. They kept my pain under control. I felt very comfortable with my stay there. |

| Well, I have gone to Munson for all of my needs since i was little. I even had both my childern there. Although, they are the only one in my town, i could have went out of town if i choice to, but i was confident in my surgeon, so I felt comfortable staying close to home, and it all turned out just excellent. |

The only other local hospitals are very small. Munson is the "parent" hospital of the other branches around Traverse City. |

The person who assigns rooms to the patients on East 2 did a wonderful job. Many of the patients seen on this floor are elderly. They somehow (consciously or unconsciously, I don't know) put me in with a 30 year old mother of two, just like me. We had so much in common. We walked the halls together, staggered the visits of our children to try and maintain peace etc. We got along well and are even planning a camping trip later this summer! |

I found the nurses and all of the staff at this hospital to be wonderful and caring people. I had a minor complicaiton and they were all over it immediately. They took such great care of me while I was there! |

The staff was wonderful and wanted to know what else they could do to help others who came in for WLS. The staff took care of all my needs from hygene to exercise and comfert. Thank you Sue! The parking was poor becuse of construction I have been to hospital sence (to visite other WLSers) and parking is now back to good.I do think all LABS need bigger chairs for the bigger person!! as for restfull I had a hard time of it becuse the man accross the hall was a yeller and the staff did the best the could with the elderly man who did not know were he was or why he was there. Visitor policie is good and I have 5 children and they let everyone of them up to see me all at once and they let them stay as long as they liked and they answered all there questions in a way that they could understand, bravo! |

The only negative thing I have to say is that there were 2 nurses out of all that helped me in my 4 day stay that I felt had poor bedside manners! The day of my surgery I started heavily menstrating. I felt degraded with these 2 nurses who I practically had to beg to help me thru the necessary hygene process. My husband actually had to call the nurses station and complain for me that I needed help because I couldn't do it myself. Finally someone showed up. It was not a pleasant experience and I felt really embarrased. Most of the staff was very understanding and tried to put my embarrassing feelings at ease. |
