Comments: I had never been in the hospital before surgery, but if I ever have to be again I would prefer it be here. My experience w/ NYP Cornell was great- the staff was amazing, I felt very well taken care of, and an awesome view of the east river! :-)

Competitors: The hospital is hugh! Very high tech and clean.
Comments: This is a teaching hospital so many of the staff is inexperienced. Had to be proactive in everyway if you wanted things. Had to remind them to give me my daily meds which I took at home. Even though they ask you over and over again about which meds you take they don't give them to you unless you asked.

Competitors: This was my first overnight stay at a hospital.
Comments: I had a terrible experience in the recovery room. My nurse was completely incompetent. I had no pillow for 6 hours. They wouldn't let my mom come and help me stand up for the first time because it was 5 minutes before visiting hours started. I didn't get out of recovery for 6 hours because a bed wasn't ready for me yet. However, once I was in my room things went pretty smoothly. Sometimes some of the nurses were a little unresponsive to the call button which I found irritating. Take this all with a grain of salt because I was on a lot of morphine.

Comments: The only issue I had was with a few of the nurses or nurses assistants...I would press the nurse button after the catheter was removed because I needed help lowering the bed and getting it out of and at one point it took 5 presses of the nurse button and 20 minutes for a nurse to come and hastily help me! But that was only 2 nurses, the others were great.

Competitors: I was relieved that my surgeon, Dr. Pomp (who is EXCELLENT) was affiliated with this hospital.
Comments: My only complaint is the nurse and nurses aid that I had the morning after my surgery. They were the absolute WORSE nurses that encountered during my stay. They were completely unresponsive to my needs. When the nurse came 30 mins. late with my pain medication I asked her what the delay was about. She said, "It's crazy out there." I said, "It's crazy in here. I just had surgery yesterday." I couldn't wait until the shift changed! Other than that everybody else was wonderful. Oh yeah, and the parking is terrible...unless you are very wealthy.

Comments: The staff seemed "ok" not overly sensitive or extremely kind, just "ok". I was over drugged w/ morphine, and the combination of my sleep apnea, I fell into non responsive, respiratory distress, had to be revived, my oxygen level was ONLY 10%. Ended up in ICU for two days. I wouldn't say they had the most reliable nurses.

How Selected: This is where my surgeon practices so this is where I went.
Competitors: It rates below local hospitals in my area. Most of the issues I have with this hospital concern one very ornery nurse and my allergic reaction to pain meds. I wanted my surgeon notified earlier on that I wasn't tolerating the pain meds so that they could be changed when they didn't work. The first 24 hours after surgery I was very sick due to my intolerance to the pain meds. They were switched 3 times but none of the meds I was given gave me relief. A nurse who also was attending school for her MD administered a dosage of toradol with I.V. Prevacid (or Prilosec, can't remember which) and thankfully that brought relief my second night there. At one point I got myself out of bed to use the bathroom and couldn't get back in. I pushed the call button and asked nicely 8 times for assistance getting myself back in that bariatric bed. The beds were good, very comfortable, not patient friendly, however. 35 minutes later a nurse came in to help, that's when she informed me I complain too much.
Comments: All WLS patients are put on a "bariatric clears diet". No one understood that I didn't have a gastric bypass. I was yelled at by a nurse for drinking juice from the cafeteria (per my nutritionists instructions) because she assumed I would dump. There is no distinction between the different WLS procedures. I think the hospital needs to be more informed about their patients and the patients needs.

How Selected: This is the hospital where Dr. Pomp, one of the few surgeons with Empire BC/BS Direct HMO affiliation was based. I have been there before as a visitor and knew of it's fine reputation.
Competitors: The New York Weill Cornell Medical Center is the best. Only NYU and Lenox Hill come close since New York and Columbia Presbyterian merged. Any large teaching hospital in a large city such as NYC will have it's share of problems, but they seem to handle them quickly and professionally.
Comments: I had my surgery on January 4, 2005. The intake of the surgery is at the Day Surgery Center, where privacy is ridiculous. You are walking or seated after taking all of your clothes off in the same room with other surgery patients AND THEIR FAMILIES, whether it was 1 or 10 people. Staff was efficient. Nursing care was sparse and you had to use the call button to get someone to come in to see you. The bed is designed by Hill Rom to turn into a chair to make it easier to get up, but I waited hours for someone to help me use it and after the second time I had to call someone in to let me back in the bed (features are not usable from inside the bed), I had climbed out of the bed on my own and had them remove the side so I could get in and out on my own. Staff was stretched way too thin. But they were all pleasant and accommodating and seemed knowledgeable. A lot of "Assistants" walking in and out of room with clipboards not really knowing what they were doing or being very helpful when asked questions. After waiting two hours after Dr. released me, I was finally given discharge papers and gave up after the nurse left and 20-30 min. later I still had no wheelchair so I just walked out. It is an excellent hospital for the surgery, the surgeon, Dr. Pomp, is top notch and their program seems good. I hope aftercare is as good and not like the nursing experience. I highly recommend this hospital even with above comments and although parking is a nightmare because I feel the chances of complications or other problems are less likely during the surgery and immediately after. Forget the post op food. The same orange jello was sent at each meal, with the same lime Gatorade. Finally on third day some pureed food was offered an hour late for lunch, as I was leaving the hospital. So I never actually got to eat. They do not give you enough direction on managing medications when you go home or on how to monitor blood pressure, blood sugars at home or how much to exactly eat before you feel you will vomit. Very vague about stuff like that.

Comments: Overall I had l an excellent experience. I did have a couple of things that were a bit of an issue. I ended up staying in the recovery room over 24 hours because there were no beds in the hospital for me. (I found out this is not uncommon for this hospital). The upside of this is that I had the MOST wonderful care from the nurses in the recovery room. They were great and very attentive to my needs. The downside is that it was hard to rest and my family couldn't stay there the whole time. My other comment is that the bariatric beds are wonderful! However, the nursing staff needs better training on how to use them. My bed got stuck in a position and they didn't know how to fix it. Maintenance was called; however it ended up that another nurse was able to fix it because she knew how to work the various buttons that control the bed. Overall, my hospital experience was excellent. This was the first time I was in a hospital as a patient and it was probably as painless and I could hope for.

Comments: Generally a very nice hospital. Modern facilities. Good staff. I only had once situation with a new nurse who really needed to work on her bedside manner and professionalism but after I complained and got THAT taken care of, I have to say that all else went well. The surgeon himself and the residents visited several times a day, which was reassuring.

Comments: Overall great, could have been cleaner in the sense of having the floors sweeped twice and three times a day. Once someone came to take blood or the other they would drop things on the floor and it would stay there until the next day, when they officially cleaned the floors

Competitors: NY Presbyterian is rated #1 ONLY because of their top surgeons, not for the facilities, nursing staff, pain management, etc. The entire staff, excluding Dr. Gagner and Dr. Pomp was horrible. They showed no compassion, no modesty.
Comments: When I had an emergency in my bed involving swollowing vomit and not being able to talk, I pressed the emergency call button and when they came on the speaker, they asked what was wrong and I couldn't answer. Because I couldn't answer, she hung up and never summoned a nurse to the room. I could have died in my bed if I didn't force myself to talk the second time I called the nurse.

Competitors: The difference in the quality of care from my previous surgery at Mt. Sinai, NYC, which was miserable-and NY Presbyterian is vast. This surgery is uncomfortable at best and traumatic at worst no matter where you are, but NY Presbyterian was most definitely the BEST hospital to have this surgery.
Comments: From the time of admission, to surgery and post-op, everything went like a fine tuned machine. I can't speak highly enough of everyone at that hospital, from the caring responsive nurses, support personnel, and of course, the unbelievable medical staff associated with Dr. Gagner. Everyone was so accomodating, kind, gentle, and genuinely concerned about my comfort. I can't speak highly enough about this hospital.
