Comments: this hospital has atleast 4 surgeons that do WLS 3 times a week. They should have a couple of rooms for bariatric patient. If you need a wheelchair on the dpearture date make sure you call 3 hours before. Also if you have to make potty make sure you keep calling. The night staff was great and some of the day staff (lilly was great) was less to be desired. To make your spouse pay for parking when they are paying thousands in hospital stay is stupid.

Comments: I have been told so many times about the overworked staff of the North Shore Hospital. The suggestion of getting a private nurse was even put out there. Well, either many people were wrong, the hospital got better, or I had such a low anticipation of what to expect, but I thought the staff was FANTASIC !!!!

Comments: THE HOSPITAL IS UNDERSTAFFED...ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT!! I was on 2 Cohen (not the bariatric floor) and when the morning shift comes in they have a parade past all the patient's rooms with absolutely NO REGARD for the fact that you are trying to sleep. They are loud, unprofessional and really rude people. They yell up and down the corridors and when you ring for help they yell thru the microphone. The Nursing Assistants are so overworked that they get nasty if you ask them for something and the cleanliness of the room left a lot to be desired. As far as the surgery itself, I felt my surgeon and the operating room staff as well as the nursing staff in the recovery room where I spent nearly 36 hours due to complications were AWESOME.

How Selected: My surgeon has his privlidges there.
Competitors: I highly recommend this hospital over others closer to me in my area
Comments: I recommend NSUH highly. I was impressed they had high end bariatric beds which allowed you to go from a reclining postion to a seat position so you get out of the bed with minimal strain. Although not a drawback, but the nurses had to regulate the bed so they knew when you were up and about, or in the bathroom. Each time you got up they made sure the bed was tidy and clean before you went back into it. The nurses were awesome both day and nite!!!!! Only complaint I have was with the food the low sodium broth made me swell and feel sick. I had complications and had the best treatment from all involved in my care. NSUH is and will stay #1 on my list of hospitals

How Selected: My surgeon is affiliated with North Shore
Competitors: Very nice - big comfy rooms - understaffed
Comments: Post surg I spent the night PACU because of my sleep apnea - the care was INCREDIBLE - roughly 2 patients to each nurse. My experience on 2 monti was far different - nurses and aides that had FAR too many people to care for. The care ranged from LOUSY to Pretty Good on 2 Monti. Some of that had to do with your nurse. I asked several times to wash on Friday and finally was helped to on Staurday - Sue Thank You - you are one hell of a nurse! I had a "bariatric" bed which was really neat - it raised you from lying to fully seated so it was easy to get up - the problem was the staff did NOT KNOW HOW TO USE IT. On my third day I finally had a nurse who knew how to work the bed. The recleiner and wheelchair were obese freindly and so were the gowns.

Competitors: NORTHSHORE IS A WONDERFUL HOSPITAL BUT THEY ARE A LITTLE SHORT STAFFED
Comments: THE NURSES AND DOCTORS IN RECOVERY ARE THE MOST WONDERFUL ATTENTIVE PEOPLE IN THE HOSPITAL THE NIGHT STAFF IS SO SMALL YOU COULD WAIT ALL NIGHT FOR HELP AND I USE TO PRAY NOT TO HAVE ANY PAIN AT NIGHT SO I WOULDN'T HAVE TO CALL FOR THEM. NOT THAT THEY WERE BAD BUT ONLY ONE NURSE TO A WHOLE FLOOR SHE CAN'T BE IN ALL PLACES AT ONE TIME.

Competitors: I know they have one of the best ratings in the country. I just found that once I left post op the nurses, aides and residents were not very helpful. I had to hire an aide for two nights after I came out of post op.

Comments: NSUH Manhasset is not just a place but a wonderful group of caring folks. From the highly skilled Professionals to the para professionals. I found a team that seemed to want to provide quality care in a friendly manner. I will always be grateful for the health care team that took care of me during my stay there. Now back to the question, the hospital is just this huge campus. It is clean and decorated in a cheerful manner. It is a teaching facility with state of the art technology. If my family members ever needed medical care I would continue to make NSUH Manhasset the hospital of choice whenever possible.

How Selected: My surgeon works out of this hospital therefore I had to have my surgery here.
Competitors: Compared to another hospital closer to my home (which does not do weight loss surgery) I would have to say that it falls short of an above-average rating due to short staffed, faulty equipment and noise levels during the night by the hospital staff which were unacceptable.
Comments: Although this hospital has received a #1 rating in the country, in my opinion, it has a long way to go before it earns that rating. I was only 1 of many patients during my stay who were dissatisfied with the level of care after our surgeries. The surgical staff was wonderful and quite professional as well as compassionate. I hope I never have to stay in this hospital again.

Competitors: I was in Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip NY 3X in the past 2 years and I found the quality of care to be better at Good Sam which is a smaller hospital.
Comments: I found the nursing staff good. Some of the nursing assistants could use some teaching in compassion for they are seriously lacking.

Comments: It continues to have problems with proper "meals" for post op patients. I was fortunate to have a nurse stay with me the first two nights, without this I am not sure my stay would have been so good.
