About Our Program
The Nevada Surgical Weight Loss Center is designed to help patients lose weight and keep it off. We go far beyond the surgery by providing a life-changing program that includes nutritional guidance, support groups and coordination of counseling services.
Our experienced, board-certified surgeons specialize in the surgical treatment of morbidly obese patients. Two kinds of laparoscopic procedures are offered: the Lap Band and the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Click here to read about the different procedures.
Our program provides a multidisciplinary team approach that maximizes patient outcomes. This team consists of surgeons, a registered dietitian, registered nurse, psychologist and a coordinator. Patients access a program that is tailored to their needs. This will include an empowering approach resulting in a new life and way of eating. Potential patients attend an educational seminar and meetings with our staff prior to having surgery. Click here to see the seminar schedule.
Additionally, the surgeon refers potential patients to a psychologist who provide an evaluation before surgery. Finally, patients’ care is assisted by a program coordinator, who works along with their team to help patients lose weight.

| My Sister and her two daughters used this hospital. I also heard they had specialized equipment for bariatric patients and that "sealed the deal" for me. I hate small hospital equipment.

Most hospitals that I have stayed in, have small gurneys, hospital beds are uncomfortable, and all the visitor's chairs are made for small people.

I had my surgery on 11-21-06. The Pre-op room was good. My surgery was postponed for over 8 hours though. I didn't like the way that most of the nurses couldn't speak clear English and it was hard to understand them. They could have updated us who were waiting for the wls, more often, to let us know what was taking so long.
When I went in - finally - for the surgery, it went very well, finished in less than an hour, however, in the recovery room - the nurse there was very uptight or overly pushy - and not very understanding. However, later I found out I had difficulty coming around from the anesthesia. I was extremely thirsty and they refused to let me have anything to drink, but instead of letting me know why, they just said no you can't have anything. I realized afterwards, that I still had the tube down my nose. But they could have told me that.
Since my breathing was not up to full capacity, they put me in the ICU for about a day.
When I was allowed 'nutrition', they brought be liquids - but none of them were sugar free! Eek... I refused them all - because I didn't want to get sick from what I was eating, so I sipped a lot of water. They had put a catheter in (which I was extremely grateful for), and put my legs into a massaging leg binders - which were wonderful - and I wish I could have a pair for home.
Once I was put up into the bariatric wing, the nutrition improved .. although the temperature of the foods could have been better - warmer for the warm liquids especially -- cold soup and broth are not my favorites. They still insisted on fruit juices - which are much too sweet for me.
Bad Experience - The day I had my catheter removed (4:30 am), I was still hooked up to IV's, my Pain Meds, Oxygen, and leg massagers. At 6:30 a.m. a CNA came in and took my vitals. About a 1/2 hour later (about 3 hours after having the catheter removed) I had to go to the restroom. I pushed the "Call Nurse" button, for someone to come in, but NO ONE DID for almost 1 1/2 - 2 hours from 7:00 to 9:00 and by that time, I was panicking. What good is a Call Nurse button, if they are not going to come?? My husband came in at 9:00 a.m, and I told him to go get someone before I scream. I was even yelling out for someone to help, flashing my lights on and off, and playing the TV loudly, but no one came in. My husband was very angry and stormed down to the nurses station and demanded someone come down and unhook me to let me go to the restroom. The nurses started yelling at me "why didn't you use your phone". Well for one thing - I couldn't reach it - it was pushed way back, behind my bed, and I couldn't raise myself up, and twist my body to get it. They argued that it hadn't been 1 1/2 - 2 hours since I pushed my call button - but it was because I saw the time on the TV news broadcasts. They were calling me a liar. I and my husband did no like that at all.
When my doctor came in, and I told him of that situation, he said he would take care of it. And from then on, I was treated much better. The one CNA who argued with me and my husband, then had an attitude for the rest of the day.
The rest of the week I was there were much better. I should have walked more, but it was hard to get off the bed and walk to the bathroom. I had hard time sitting up without pain. But by Friday, the 24th I was discharged.
The two best nurses were Lisa on Nights and Shirley on Days (two different days), but what can you expect on the Thanksgiving holiday? Everyone else was somewhat pleasant. The CNA who had the attitude was Judith. |

My experience at NVH was great! The staff was super friendly (my nurses were Raquel and Dakon ... both great!), knowledgeable, thorough, and knew how to handle WLS patients. I didn't get to choose my food but it wasn't too bad (considering I could only have liquids). Everything was clean and the phone and TV were free of charge to use. The nurses checked on the patients all the time and made sure we got up to walk and do things on our own. The only complaint I have was when it was time for everyone to go to sleep, some of the nurses were very loud in the hallways and woke the patients up. |

This is a small older hospital. They are currently in the middle of a transition to another name. The staff was attentive and very nice. The names of the nurse and nurse's assistant were written on a whiteboard in your room.
I had a private room. It was good sized and clean. The bed was horrible. I noticed that I had a much older model than my co-patients. The matress was fairly thin and covered in plastic. When the bed was in the sitting postition, the sheets didn't fit and were stretched across the area of the fold. There was about 4-5 inches of empty space between the bed and the linen. The linen was very old and had what appeared to be moth holes in it. I had a trapese on the bed but the triangle was bare metal and my hands slipped. The controls to raise and lower the bed were built into the plastic siderails (like on an airplaine) and were difficult to get to.
The bathroom was ok but had no towels. The bathroom was not very clean. There were some dead bugs on the floor and the sink did not look as if it had been cleaned.
The food sucked. Absolutely inedible. Pureed turkey with no broth or seasoning. Yuk.
The worst thing was waking to the sound of some man yelling very loudly in what sounded like the language of Pakistan or India. It scared me. It went on for probably 45 minutes. This happened twice. I summoned the nurse because I could tell he was right outside my door. She informed me it was a Dr.!! I couldn't believe it. None of the staff asked him to quiet down or move. He just kept yelling into his cell phone directly outside the rooms of the newly post-op patients.
While I liked the staff alot, all of them...I would not want to go back to this hospital again. |

| I thought that it was pretty well equipped for anyone who is overweight from the gowns, beds & wheelchairs. The only thing that I felt that was not overweight friendly was when I went to preregistered at the hospital the area of space in the room was very small and the chairs where too small and very uncomfortable. And to top it all off they were all connected to one another in a row so it's a good thing my husband was the only one who was sitting next to me and there wasn't anyone else in my row of chairs. My hips where feeling the pain in those chairs. |

Majority of the staff was kind and well trained. In recovery all I remember was a very loud, coughing nurse. Not Good! And they assembled the canopy and trapeze on my bed the night of surgery. I was so uncomfortable. My slippers got mopped under my bed, where they were useless to me. But other than that (which I assume are small complaints in the large scheme of things-) I felt very comfortable. When the nurses change shifts, they write their name, the charge nurse's name, and the managing nurse's name on a board at the foot of your bed. I never woke up and wondered who my nurse was, or how to reach them (they put their cell phone number as well, so if the nurse light gets no response, you can just call!)
I would rate an 8 out of 10. |

I have never stayed in in other hospital here in Nevada as I am a new resident here. I am originally from California. |
| Comments: |
The hospital it self is being upgraded to a more stylish looking, newer looking facility. I did not like coming through the ER, but that is the common practice there when you come before the formal/main entrance opens. The work they have done so far is very appealing. I have no problem with the OR area, was very clean and large. Sorry to say I do not remember therecovery room at all. I am one of those that do not come full circle out of anisthesia, but I was there for a very long time because of it. I am sure they took very good care of me.My actual room was very nice. I had the window in which I was able to watch the rain we had been waiting anxiuosly for a very long time, I could even hear it and it soothed me. Our floor was very quiet. It was the newer wing of the hospital. The staff was very accommadating. They went out of their way to make sure we were happy and comfortable as well as our family. They made sure my husband ate very well and thos guest trays were huge, and very tasty as my kids said. The food we were served was also very good when it came time to get the real stuff pureed of course. And anything I did not like..they sent it back and got me something I did like. But over all, they aim to please and they did. If anything went wrong, in which we did have an incident, but the hospital heads came in ASAP and WOW...you talk about fixing things...they do not take any of thisany other way but serious and they make sure you know they are there to make your stay a perfect happy uneventful one. This hospital and it staff has my full five star approval, I hated to leave. |

Absotluely incredible day staff!!! Can't say as much for the night staff. Had a horrible nurse two nights in a row. The third night my husband finally said we wouldn't deal with her again and I got a VERY good nurse. |

This a smaller hospital tha I am used to. |

They are going through some renovations right now (12-02) so there is a vast difference between the old and new sections of the hospital. The pre-op room that they staged me in (which they call the outpatient area) was old, crowded and not very appealing. On the other hand, the patient rooms were very nice and comforatable. I was most impressed with the nursing staff. They were the BEST! Very responsive to the needs of us bariatric patients! |

It was comparable to one other hospital that I have stayed at. Both hospitals were great. |

I was pleased with the service I received from the staff at Lake Mead Hospital. I have no complaints. |
