How Selected: Not my choice - it is where my surgeon does his surgical practice.
Competitors: It is in the top few local hospitals, I understand, but it is the only one I have used, so I can't compare really.
Comments: The entire experience there was generally superb. All baratric patients get private rooms on a particular floor. There are other patients there, too, but bariatrics don't get sent anywhere else. You get to have your support person stay overnight with you. There is a comfortable foldout chair - my husband had no complaints. Most of the nursing staff was very good and well-educated as to the bariatic experience. I preferred the nighttime nurses to the day nurses, and I did get one crotchety old nurse on my last day. Also, my IV came out of the vein and no one caught it until my arm was a gigantic baloon. They said it happens all the time, not a big deal. My opinion is that if it happens all the time, then they should be on guard for it. I got a pain pump which was great, and there was always someone coming in. Not much quiet rest, though.

How Selected: My Doctor works out of this hospital and I have had alot of testing done here for pre op stuff and the staff so far is wonderful
Competitors: A hospital is a hospital, its the staff that makes it or breaks it.
Comments: It's clean and everyone there is polite and informative. My only dislikes is that there are not enough nurses on the night staffing at all! Thank goodness they let my husband stay with me both nights to get me up and walking every 2 hours, its difficult to get out of all the stuff they have on you by yourself:)

Comments: The care I received was amazing. Everyone was exquisitely sensitive to my needs, especially the horrendous night spent going back and forth the the bathroom, and I needed help to get there. The staff was wonderful.

How Selected: I work there! I was confident that I would get good care, and that patients are given good care in general
Competitors: I knew that I would get good care from the staff who knew me. I purposely didn't tell the night staff that I worked there, Had one great night one bad night
Comments: The physical "bariatric unit" is not set up well for bariatric patients, and the hospital doesn't seem to be improving it. Staff was trained for the program start up and seems to be empathetic, but it is not included in new staff orientation.

How Selected: Only one in town that has WLS patients
Competitors: Better than the other local hospitals in room accomodations and cleanliness. Most of the staff members that were assigned to me were very young, and a lot of them seemed inexperienced...not all of them. The communication between these staff members was nearly non-existent. I'd repeat something to three different people, and each of them acted like they were hearing it for the first time, even though I'd specifically requested that they share the information with the nurse or next person coming on duty (i.e. I need pain meds).
Comments: I had to push to be ALLOWED to walk right after my surgery. They kept telling me "later, later" and I made them help me up and get me walking that first time. After that, I was on my own with the walking...which was fine, as I was expecting that. Like any other hospital in Tucson, the nurses and techs were constantly busy, so I always made sure that I didn't wait until the last minute to call someone if I was going to need something.

How Selected: This is the hospital that Dr. Patrick Chiasson does the surgery.
Competitors: About the same or just a step above
Comments: I was very pleased with the staff on the second floor to us as bariatric patients. I have one negative comment and that is they do not honor what we were told as far as seeing a dietician for a certain price. I had to pay the full amount of the visit and after an letter, I was not given a choice. I had to pay or go to collections.

How Selected: It is the closest hospital to where I live that has a bariatric surgical program.
Competitors: Have never been a patient in any other local hospital.
Comments: It was above-average. As a nurse, I felt that the care and the treatment was better than most.

Comments: Northwest has been estabslished for years. They have a new surgeon who is now doing minimally invasive surgery. His operating room is designed to do "Bariatric Surgery". They have six bariatric beds.
