How Selected: This is where my surgeon does his surgeries.
Competitors: Other then having to pay for parking and keeping my family informed of when I was moved this was a great hospital.
Comments: Surgery was planned at 730am and I was not held back got in right away, the less fortunate is that there was not a room available after recovery and i had to stay in recovery area for over 6 hours that I could have been in a room. My family was only allowed to visit 2 at a time for a few minutes and only every 2 hours. My mother had to leave and they would not let her come back to say goodbye before she left because it had not been 2 hours since the last visit. That was VERY upsetting.

Competitors: It's modern, clean and has an excellent reputation for having the best of everything. I especially like that all of the rooms are private.

Comments: There isnt really a bad thing I can say about this hospital , and the bariatric program my husband went through. The staff was fabulous, friendly and superior in their knowledge and helpfulness. My husband recieved the best care and was always attended to even during his outpatient trips to visit nutritionists and such pre operative , with such individual attention to his needs. In my opinion and after hearing from others at other hospitals, this hosptial definitly goes above and beyond a normal hospital when it comes to care and its patients. The patients are always number one~! We will be returning there if furthur treatments are nessasary , complications and such. We will also be returning their for the plastic surgury if we so choose to do so. I would highly highly reccommend anyone considering a bariatric surgury procedure to check this hospital and this program out. I cant imagine a better one in the country exists! And our surgeon.. was absolulty fabulous personal, caring, competent. I just cannot say enough!

How Selected: My research indicated Dr. Nagel was #1 for WLS/LAP. He is affilated with Northwestern. I also felt this would be a great facility to handle any and all emergencies if my surgery did not go well.
Competitors: Would NEVER, EVER, EVER go to their emergency room again. Just like ER on TV. My local hospital Edwards in Naperville ROCKS. They don't do WLS anymore.
Comments: My surgeon is the best. However, there were some things at the hospital that was bad. When I woke up in the ICU the nurse there was not very sensative to my terror. She kept smacking my hands about the tube. I wasn't trying to pull it out I was trying to tell her she was pulling it everytime she moved me. She was giving me a bath and I was trying to hold it so she wouldn't pull it. She just smacked my hands and then her and the other nurse went on complaining about their jobs. Then a gang of doctors came in (this is a teaching hospital and all she put on me was a bed pad. Now how much of me do you think this covered? I was so uncomfortable. And still no one told me why I was there. Finally one of the doctors came in and explained what had happened the day before and why I was there. Shortly after that my surgeon came in. I developed a bad infection several weeks later on a Friday. I was told to go to the ER. After driving for an hour and half, we arrived there around 7:00 pm. After waiting for 2 hours my husband asked how much longer and they said 4-5 hours. We were out of there. As I waited in the car my husband said he was going in and leave a message for my surgeon why we were leaving for our local hospital. Well they got us in right away, to make a long story short we didn't get a room until 4:00 am and most of that time was spent in the hallway. They needed to give me a leak test the next day and it was like the hospital shuts down on the weekends. The techs didn't know how to use the equipment. The OP area was closed. Really made me feel good they knew what they were doing, not. The cleaning of the rooms was only done if you demanded it. All in all it was bad... However, in the big picture these things are small in comparison to the medical care I got. And I do feel I got the BEST. And that is what is most important.

How Selected: I selected NMH because of its fine reputation.
Competitors: Quite possibly the best in the city and one of the best in the country.
Comments: I had heart surgery at NMH 7 weeks ago and love it. I have nothing negative to say about it and would recommend it to anyone having any kind of procedure. The patient rooms are all private and very attractive. They all have a bench seat that can pull out to make a bed for overnight guests. The patient rooms start on the 10th floor. I had a beautiful view of Navy Pier and Lake Michigan from my 10th floor room, where I could watch the sun rise every morning. The staff were all wonderful, friendly and very helpful. I will make sure, any kind of medical procedure I need in the future, is done here.

Comments: Great Hospital. Parking is a bit expensive. I spent the first day in ICU, which the nurses were very attentive. The next day I spent in a regular room, which was not 100% clean when I got in there, so it was cleaned (special thanks go out to my mom). The nurses in the regular rooms were not nearly as attentive, but everyone was friendly.

How Selected: All my physicians -- PCP and specialists -- practice at NMH. Also, I first started my journey at the Wellness Institute, which provides most of the pre- and post-surgical screening and medical / dietary / psychological services for NMH's surgical patients.
Competitors: This was my first in-patient surgical experience, so I have no personal basis on which to make a comparison. But the neighborhood is terrific for support people who might want to escape the hospital setting for dinner or a quick stroll along Michigan Avenue.
Comments: NMH is the kind of hospital facility that just makes you feel well cared for. The building itself is impressive. The rooms are private and well appointed. The nursing staff all seemed to care about my comfort and health. Any of my less-than-excellent rankings are easily brushed aside: Parking (although validated) is pricey because the hospital is located in the heart of one of the poshest neighborhoods of one of the world's greatest cities; a totally restful and quiet experience is impossible at any hospital where the staff monitors your vitals on a regular basis. Overall, it was a great experience...except, of course, for that operation thing!

How Selected: my principal physician is associated with Northwestern ... but one of the reasons I originally chose to be associated with this hospital is that I saw a news report that if anything ever happened to the President of the United States while he was here in Chicago, they would take him to Northwestern. SO ... if its good enough for the President, its good enough for me!!
Competitors: Actually, Chicago is blessed with MANY good hospitals ... even the "County" hospital is supposed to have excellent doctors. This was my first time EVER in a hospital myself, but I've heard that University of Chicago, Rush, Loyola, and several others are very good too.
Comments: One of the things that impressed me the most (besides the view of the lake from my private room [all rooms are private with a private bath!], the daybed so that a visitor could stay [even though my husband stole my pillow ... they DID get me another one] ... but the thing that really impressed me was how quiet it was! I was up at 4am one morning and just listened to see if I could hear something ... and it was SO quiet! I would have liked a little more attention from the staff, but maybe that's just me.

Competitors: I would rate Northwestern Hospital in the top 5% of hospitals in the Nation. Only second to Rush St Lukes Presbyterian Medical Center.

Competitors: I feel its the best hosptial in Chicago but I'm biased. My surgeon was great! He helped save my life.
Comments: The staff was responsive and they took pride in taking care for me. This "pushed me" because sometimes we give up on ourselves but they belived in us. If I could ever work for a facility it would be Northwesten Memorial

Competitors: I "luckily" have never had to go to any other hospital. however i have had 3 surgeries here and have never had a bad experience.
Comments: NWM is tops in my book. They are very eager to please and will follow up on any discrepancies you might have. Most importantly NWM is just as thourough in patient care as it is billing and dealing with insurance. To end they are excellent in all that they do.

How Selected: This is where my PCP is, it is close, and very easy to get to.
Competitors: This is the first time I have ever been in the hospital so I don't have a way to compare to any other local hospital.
Comments: The only reason the hospital didn't get excellent straight through was that when you have the open RNY at the hospital you have to stay in ICU on the first day. That was fine, but the second day they didn't have a regular room available for me so I had in the ICU another day. I felt as if the doctor was trying to push me out of the hospital saying, Oh, I think you you're ready to go home today. I was not an ICU patient technically because I wasn't just out of surgery. I felt as if I was treated like that. The first day after surgery, the nurses came in a bathed me at 7:00 am, because I was already awake at 5:00. The second day in ICU, my nurse came in and introduced herself. I didn't get cleaned up until 11:00 am and then she made me go to the sink in the ICU room and had me trying to wash myself up. It was not a good thing because Open surgery just pulls a lot of pain. I had the cathedar removed that day and when I woke up I had to go to the bathroom, I called for the nurse, it took her awhile to get to me so I unplugged myself and was already there by the time she got there. I had to pull my curtain closed in order to have some privacy. A nurse came in while I was getting washed up without knocking first. I called for my nurse one time and she came and said that she would be back in 10 minutes with blankets; she didn't come back for another hour, and without the blankets. It was just better when they finally got me up stairs at about 5:30 pm that day.
