How Selected: this hospital was automatically selected with the surgeon I picked out.
Competitors: Norton's was the best hospital I have ever been in. The staff was wonderful compared to the others around town I have been in
Comments: I have been in many different hospitals and had many different surgeries. Norton's was by far the best hospital I have ever been in. All of the nurses who cared for me were fantastic! They treated me like a Human Being and seemed like they actually cared. They kept coming in to see if they could get me anything and even asked "how would you like some Crystal Light?" I didn't know I could even have any until they brought it to me and it was the best tasting stuff I had! Then to top it all off, the day after I got home, I received a card in the mail from everyone in the hospital who helped me get ready, did my IV's before surgery, nurses from Recovery and nurses on my floor who took care of me. That was the sweetest thing I had ever received and a neat way to make the patient feel good about where they had been! I recommend Norton's to everyone! Bariatric surgery or not -

How Selected: It was the surgeon that I was more concerned about.
Competitors: I really can't compare.
Comments: Some of the nurses were great. When I got to my room they didn't have the bed ready, the room was hot and the thermostat was messed up, I could hear other people talking very loudly through the vents, the nurses didn't understand that I couldn't take hydrocodone when I was released from the hospital. My parents were not allowed back to the pre-surgery room the whole time I was back there. I only got to see them for like 2 seconds and I already had the calming medicine. Then my room didn't have any seats for my parents and visitors to sit down and the room was very small. My husband who was staying the night with me didn't have a chair to sleep in so they had to hunt one down which blocked the door and everytime they came in during the night they hit it and woke him up to move it. It was a mess.

How Selected: I had my first child at Nortons and it is always the only center of excellence hospital that medicare allows
Competitors: Poor compared to Jewish. I am really disappointed in the hospital. Throughout my stay there were only one or two care-giving staff members who I felt did their job well. Myra was wonderful, her hands were used so God could save my life...she was wonderful throughout my stay. Melissa was very helpful to me and Jayne who I met my last day was wonderful. The hospital lacked cleansliness and able bodied nursing staff... while there were a few great ones the rest did not offer those great ones much help. I found it interesting to see that when I took a walk there was at least 15 to 20 people sitting in or around the nurses area while a few worked most sat there like they were bored with nothing to do....so sad for those who were actually working. Twice my cpap mask fell on the floor mask facing the floor and the care person picked it up and placed it on my bed!! The hospital floors have all the sickness and disease that is traveling around the hospital and no one considered to wash it off? Good thing I was alert!
Comments: Also the whole time I was there...4 days. No one came in to clean my room, my bathroom wastebasket which was of good size was overflowing when I left. There were no towels, washclothes or any amenities in my room I had to ask for anything I needed. Towards the end of my stay there was no gloves for the doctors and nurses to put on. I thought this may be due to Christmas upcoming and I ask someon if they were working on a limited staff and they said "no, the full staff was all there." I'm very disappointed in Nortons downtown, I hope the others are not this way!

How Selected: My surgeon has privilege at several hospitals, and this is a private hospital versus the university hospital where he also scrubs. I'd been at Norton for my gallbladder with the same surgeon.
Competitors: Louisville has several outstanding hospitals, and Norton is one of them. Many of the U of L medical faculty scrub there, including my surgeon. The others aren't bad, but Norton and Jewish are the BEST.
Comments: Norton is a fine hospital with one of THE FINEST MEDICAL STAFFS in the country. Unit nurses were outstanding. A few concerns, keeping in mind that I'm a doctor's child and was brought up NOT to complain about medical things unless there's a SOLID MEDICAL REASON: I rated privacy "poor" because this is a teaching hospital. Over a hundred residents were marched through my room over the course of three days. I got tired of being awakened every hour to play guinea pig. I'm all about advancing medicine, but I finally complained. The recovery nurse also talked on her @#!($#@^%& cell phone and screamed every time my O2 monitor went off, unlike the girl who sat with me after my gallbladder and chatted quietly to bring me out of the anaesthesia haze. The anaestesiologist was an arrogant asshole who gave me a drug to which I reacted, because he didn't pay attention to my allergy history and wouldn't take my concerns seriously when I tried to talk to him pre-op- this was the OPPOSITE of what happened when I had my gallbladder out at Norton in '00. I was VERY firm but respectful with this guy and he STILL didn't listen to me. What's one more dead fat chick, I guess?
