How Selected: I live in the area; it has a good reputation
Competitors: No better or worse.
Comments: I attended a public information session about WLS at OHSU. The nurse practiioner who led the class was abrupt and rude to the attendees at times. She was bossy and clearly didn't want to be there. The surgeon who spoke interrupted most people before they finished their questions. I was so negatively impressed that I didn't bother to pursue treatment there.

How Selected: OHSU was the only hospital in the Portland Oregon area that performs BD/DS surgeries. Also, I wanted to use Dr. Robert Martindale and Dr. Clifford Deveney as my surgeons.
Competitors: They are cutting edge as they are a teaching hospital. The facility is extremely clean and the rooms are beautifully designed.
Comments: I've had nothing but good experiences with all the staff at OHSU before and after my surgery. I can't say enough good things about them.

Comments: I have had 2 surgeries at this hosptial, and both times had very poor nursing care. Of course I had about 2 good nurses per week long stay, but the rest seemed overworked, stressed out & even mean. I would recommend having a family member with you at all times, or you will suffer from the sub-par care. Also, the "learning" doctors came across very pompus & cocky. Yet, they were incompetent. One having my catheter taken in & out 3 times due to lack of communication. You can read my pofile for much more on my experiences here. If I could have had Duodenal Switch somewhere else, I would have. I felt very neglected & mistreated by the nurses at OHSU. On the other hand BOTH of my surgeons were wonderful.

Competitors: I would be petrified to have it at my local hospital due to the health complications that I have and our hosp. not being equipped to deal with it. We have excellent doctors and staff just not enough specialized equipment and staff to do the job. Administration here sucks.
Comments: OHSU is a number one rated hospital and I would recommend it to anyone.

How Selected: When I found out that they were doing the gastric bypass patients for those on medicare, as the hospital where I live did not. I have always heard good things about OSHU. I had been there before when very young.
Competitors: The bariactic floor is new and has all the newer features for the obese and their comfort. I was very impressed.
Comments: I have only good things to say and when I called for help they quickly came when needed. I was in a private room and did just what I wanted with no interference. It was large with a large bathroom and new and beautiful. I was impressed. When I had to come back after going home I did not get into the top floor and was not as pleased with the next room I had. They kind of spoil those there for gastric bypass.

Comments: I hope my experience was not common. I felt as though I were in a place run by the keystone cops. The nurses didn't listen very well. I told them my bed was weird and I think they just figured I was on drugs! Turned out I was in an inflatable ICU bed for patients who are in a coma. It kept blowing up and deflating and really hurt my back. I had to refuse to get back into it to get a new bed. They gave me soy protein in my broth, even though I am highly allergic. I was in a room with no window, a roommate who had too many visitors (including a screaming baby). Staff were slow to respond to the nurse call button. I was very glad to go home.

Comments: The nursing staff, for the most part, was less than attentive. I had two exceptional nurses and the rest were practically invisible. When I was asked by my Dr. to get walking with the help of a nurse, there was no response of help for hours. Only once in 4 days, did a nurse walk with me as requested and that was only after catching me walking on my own in the hallways.

Comments: I thought the service at OHSU was great, the only real complaint I had was sometimes the nurses response was slow. The parking there isn't great, and it wasn't that quiet. Everyone was really nice though, and I had great quality care, I would definitely recommend it.

How Selected: Referral from Primary Care Physician and was a preferred hospital with my insurance.
Competitors: I am not from Portland, OR. I came from about 1 hour away to this hospital.
Comments: The staff was great. They were nice and very comforting. The rooms that held two patients were very small. If you didn't have a roommate it would be fine. I had the room right next to the doors to that particular patient ward. It was really noisy during the day. I had a nurse post a sign that notified staff to keep the door closed. It was okay with the door closed. At night, it was very quiet, and the staff only came in when it was absolutely necessary. There was only one nurse who could be named Nurse Cratchit, I only had her for a shift or two. She just about yanked out my IV while trying to untangle the tubes from the IV pole. I finally just told her to calm down, my IV needed to stay in. They do have a tremendous problem though with their cafeteria sending the wrong foods to the bariatric patients. I even got chocolate ice cream one night! I didn't eat it. I would just take the stuff off the tray that I wanted, and told the aide to take the rest back the cafeteria. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and OHSU.

How Selected: The hospital and the doctor were both referrals by insurance company. They were both "in-network" so the total cost will be discounted to my insurance company.
Competitors: I've never stayed at any other hospital overnight.
Comments: My experience at OHSU was great. They went out of their way to make sure my sister had a bed next to mine (she stayed with me the first night). They nursing staff was great and even though this is a teaching hospital the residents and students were not intrusive.

How Selected: It's the Cream of the Crop in this area. Also, I go by word of mouth, so having heard good things about it from a local person, I checked it out (I didn't even know they performed WLS!)
Competitors: I've been in 3 different hospitals for 3 different problems. I'd have to say OHSU is the best
Comments: A little hard to find your way around the first time; The cafeteria was open on the weekends so my husband could get a bite to eat; nursing staff was top of the line; as were the rest of the staff; discharge provided me with detailed information; phys. therapy with detailed instruction; everyone did their part beautifully. If you're considering WLS and or have complications; this is THE place to be!

Competitors: good --
Comments: I really enjoyed the staff. They were pretty responsive unless there was a shift change, I had my own room, just as almost everone else on the floor. It was a nice room, with wood floors, and a combo bathroom with shower. Also they had a bariatric bed -- the kind that can sit up into a chair position. Funny story -- at first they told me that they would have to move me to a different bed because I was not heavy enough for the one I was in..... lucky for me (i prob have to pay for it anyway) but lucky for me they were never able to find me a different bed, so I got to keep the really cool one!!

Competitors: OHSU is a big teaching facility. My surgeon was fabulous as were one of my day shift nurses. My aide was heavenly--so caring and thoughtful but my last day shift nurse was Nurse Kratchett. She looked at me like I was looney when I requested a wheel chair to walk the quarter mile to the parking garage. She ripped my IV out and left me barely enough time to clean my wound --while it dripped through my bandage and leaked all over the floor. She was mad because she thought she wasn't going to have to do any discharge work on me but the doctor changed things on her. Like a bad movie, indeed. But that is all her problem, because I am home and problem free and down 11 lbs in 6 days.
Comments: Have someone with you at all times. I didnt think I would need my husband 24/7 but I did. They were awesome about accommodating him. Please be aware--OHSU is infamous for messing up the menus. They are always incusive of sugar and fat!! Even the last day after many complaints, my husband snatched away my sugar filled sherbert milkshake. Unbelievable!! I talked to everyone but no one had an answer. Loved the doctor, was treated with exceptional respect except for the nurse from down under.

Comments: I feel like the nurses were not listening to me or trying to supply my needs. I have had several surgeries in the past and i feel like I know my body pretty well. I don't think my thoughts or feelings were taken seriously. I was a victimof not having doctors orders supplied on time and at one point was having difficulty breathing with my o2 sats down to 75%, due to negligence on the nurses part.
