How Selected: This is where my surgeion operates. I had surgery there years before and found it was very accomodating.
Competitors: I couldn't have picked a better hospital. Parking for my visitors was easy and inexpensive.
Comments: Overall this hospital and staff rate an a+. There was only one unpleasant spot of my stay. One nurse seemed very put off by my request for more pain meds and actually ignored me until the next shift came on. She needs to be let go. Everyone else was spectacular though.

Competitors: I couldn't compare Overlake Hospital to Swedish Hospital. I was in Swedish Hospital for an emergency surgery years ago.

How Selected: where my surgeon operates out of. didnt have a choice.
Competitors: I think the nursing care at evergreen is better. But I would not go with a different surgeon.
Comments: I felt the nursing staff was poor. They would put me back in the bed or help me change positions and not give me or make accessible to me the nurse call button and the one on the bed didnt work either. also one of the night nurses before I could tell her no came in and administered extra pain meds when they were unnecarsary. I also did not agree with hospital staff pushing my morphine button. This is a bad practice this needs to be under the control of the patient. I would have also have liked a private room (which other hospitals offer) so my husband could stay the night.

How Selected: I heard it was a good hospital and both my surgeon and primary care physician have offices on-site.
Competitors: There is no family snack room where family can get a snack, ice, coffee, soda, etc. Most hospitals I've been in lately have that available to families or even patients.
Comments: Overlake is an "uppity" hospital meaning that it seems to cater primarily to professionals and upper-class folks. The main entrance has valet parking and the lobby has a fancy cafe and someone playing a grand piano for "atmosphere". The important parts (medical) of the hospital are tucked away in cramped corners of the building. The parking is $5.00 for patients with a month-long pass for check-ups. Otherwise, it is something like $4.00 per hour after the first hour, which makes it inconvenient for visitors. I would not stay at this hospital again.

Competitors: The care of the nursing staff was the best I have seen. My husband has spent alot of time in the hospital in the past year, and the care he received in that hospital couldn't compare to the care I received at Overlake.
Comments: In 3 days I only had to call a nurse one time. They were checking on me so often that there was a nurse there whenever I had to get up or needed something.

Comments: I felt my care at Overlake was good. I had only a few problems with some staff not knowing how to operate some of the equipment well ie. special bed, and shower. Also they have very load buzzers and other nurse call noises that can be anoying. They were very equipped to handle very large patients though, have a wonderful special bed and wheelchair.

How Selected: I preferred no commute. I was looking at Overlake Hospital (Bellevue, WA) and Evergreen Hospital (Redmond, WA). I have had surgery at both hospitals. The number of dissatisfactory comments of Evergreen's new bariatric unit tipped the balance. I am sure EH will eventually get it's act together.

How Selected: The hospital the doc chose.
Comments: My surgery was scheduled for tomorrow morning (5/12/03) and Friday afternoon I was called and it had to be rescheduled for Tueday the 27th. It was very hard because of all the plans that have to be made when you have a long recovery period. My family was traveling over 600 miles to be with me and help out after. I caught them on the road about 300 miles away, they had to turn around and return home. What a let down. I'm better now, trying to look at it positively.

How Selected: Overlake is where my surgeon is based out of - there was no real choice. However, having dealt with them in the past, they *would* have been my choice.
Competitors: The other hospital I have a fair amount of experience with is Valley Medical - a hospital I give poor marks to. Overlake is excellent!
Comments: The staff and environment at Overlake are responsive and thoughtful. Their emergency room (although I didn't deal with that this time) is the best and most calming one I've ever seen. The environment there is comfortable and calming, and doesn't seem rushed or overworked. It is my hospital of choice. The staff listened to my concerns and acted appropriately and as best they could to accomodate my needs; they were very responsive and timely. I shared a room with another weight loss surgery patient who had the surgery on the same day - it was great because we were able to talk and compare our experiences and knowledge. The only thing I have qualms giving good marks to is the parking. There is adequate parking and it's easy to get in and out of - however, you have to pay for it, something I think unreasonable. If I had to do it all over again, I would not hesitate a moment to go to Overlake. They were wonderful!

How Selected: I choose Overlake since my surgeon, Dave Simonowitz practices here. Prior to this experience I believed this hospital would have scored in the good and excellent category for all of my indicators!
Competitors: I have had several surgeries over the last thirty years . . . 3 in CA at Walnut Creek Kaiser (1975, 1976 & 1982); one here at Swedish Hospital in 1993 and another last March at Overlake, but as an outpatient -- it may have been a different unit than the main hospital. I have NEVER experienced ANY treatment at a facility compariable to my experiences between February 10 and 13th and then again February 24 & 25th.
Comments: I woke from surgery in agony and incontinent. In spite of this NO one, especially my surgeon addressed this concern. Staff was annoyed and left me for up to two hours to sit or slouch in cold urine. At one point they told me they had nothing else to put me in, as there were no nightgowns my size on that floor. I was told that there was no reason biologically or physiologically for this to occur -- it and I were dismissed. It was truly one of the worst experiences I have ever endured. I began post-menopausal bleeding the day of my discharge -- or approximately 64-hours after surgery. In spite of being in blinding pain, urine incontinence and bleeding vaginally I was discharged to go home (where I live by myself . . . although a good friend stayed with me and did what he could for several days) approximately 66-hours after surgery. The doctor stated that he did not see where the hospital would care for e "any better than I could be cared for at home". RIGHT. At least at home someone would change my bedding, etc. It has been a horrendous month -- althought the actual inside of me seems ok . . . I have been in either such pain or misery that food has been far from my focus -- which has been to live through the moment and get beyond the infections and other complications I have had to deal with over the last 24-days.

Comments: Everyone treated me very nice. I just felt some of the nurse's aids could have taken the time and gotten the right blood pressure cuff and takin the blood pressure the RIGHT way. They didn't know that I was an EMT at one time. I also felt very rushed by my last nurse to leave. I was on Morphine for god sake, I did'nt know what I was doing. Other then that all was fine for me. Comments: As with every hospital, there are to many patients per nurse. The nurses & RNA's are the ones that made a huge difference. Comments: When I was leaving they put me in a giant chair with wheels and two volunteers pushed me out to my car. This chair was not meant to be a wheel chair, the volunteer said they don't have large wheel chairs in their hospital. But they had giant saltwater fish tanks every where! I was glad I was "feeling no pain" and could laugh about it!
