Competitors: Very comparable. In fact, based on my experience, it was as nice as UofM when I delivered my daughter.
Comments: I was nervous about this hospital based on past reviews and the fact that it is located in a really crappy part of town. To my surprise, it was wonderful. The staff was great, the room was huge and private, the floor I was on was quiet and peaceful. Not one problem. A+++

Comments: Other OH members had posted that they were worried about their stay at POH. I found that the hospital functioned well and treated me with respect and care. My roommate made my experience much worse - had it been a different person I probably wouldn't have anything bad to say.

Competitors: The hospital was average, but the students were simply terrific. I requested a private room and they didn't honor that at all. Also the person who registered us before the surgery was just awful. Totally disinterested and cold. I was terrified and she could have cared less about doing her job with any compassion. That was just the worst part of the whole experience.
Comments: The intake Nurses before surgery were absolutely exceptional. The Nurses post op were mostly good as well, not as responsive or complete as the intake nurses. The room I had was directly across from the nurses station and the night was just unbelievably loud. There was no regard for the patients who had just had surgery and were trying to get a nights sleep. So bad I requested leaving after only 1 night, when I would have stayed 2 if it weren't as bad. I have no suggestions to make this better.

How Selected: Part of a self pay package my surgeon offers.
Competitors: I'm wasn't from the area so I can't compare to other local hospitals.
Comments: VERY LOUD (I was in a room across from the nurses station) Some of the nurses DO NOT pay attention to detail in regards to medication and unsanitary conditions. Bring along a strong support person to be your advocate and pay attention to these things for you, also pay extra for a private room if there's an option to do so (I wish I would've checked into it myself).

Comments: POH is a beautiful hospital!!! It's very clean and new with many many windows that allows the sun to shine in. I felt very comfortable there and the nurses were wonderful (aside from a few). I felt very taken care of. The nurses were chatty and made me feel better about the whole experience. This hospital was one of the nicest ones I've been in. I would go back there if I had to.

Comments: This is a teaching hospital, so be prepared for multiple assistants in surgery, anesthesiology, and nursing. Be a patient patient.

How Selected: POH is one of the facilities that my surgeon, Dr. Mark Pleatman, uses on a regular basis for his weight loss surgery patients.
Competitors: Since I am not from the Detroit area, I can't compare it to other local hospitals. Compared to facilities in my area, I would rate it above average.
Comments: I can't say enough great things about my experience with POH. This medical center is patient focused and the care from the nursing and support staff was incredible. At times, I felt a little guilty about the attention and care from the nurses...it was OVER THE TOP! It is a teaching hospital, so there were a few extra residents in and out at times, but not to the point it was intrusive. And yes, it's in a transitional urban area but that didn't effect my stay in any way. The facilities, parking, lighting, security are on par with other medical centers, regardless of location. Dr. Pleatman does so many surgeries here, the staff is very experienced caring for weight loss surgery patients. That came in handy when I had millions of little questions...should I more walking more or less, should I be drinking more or less, why was I nauseated, etc. Maybe I hit a slow week as far as admissions, but I ended up in a private room that was very quiet, spacious, and adequately furnished. My first post-op shower was a nice surprise as the bathroom had a huge walk-in with lots of hot water (something I don't get even at some of the better hotels in my business travel). In the end, the doctors, nurses and staff were what made the difference. My husband even commented about the cordial young man that did valet parking. Not that I would enjoy going back to a hospital again, but if I had to, I'd choose to go back to POH.

How Selected: It's the hospital my surgeon uses for self-pay patients.
Competitors: About the same as other hospitals.
Comments: I went into POH expecting the worst, because of the other reviews I have read here on OH, and also things patients have told me who haven't yet reviewed this hospital. I was pleasantly surprised by the service I received. The O.R. staff was excellent; I felt very safe knowing they were going to be in the operating room with me. The biggest problem I had was that my surgeon didn't order a morphine pump for me, and so I had to call down to the nurse's station every 2 hours, day and night, to get my morphine shot. But this was my surgeon's fault, not the hospital's. The nurses or PCA's generally took between one minute and 10 minutes to answer my calls, using the speaker system on the bed. Once they got my request, it would take anywhere from 3 to 45 minutes for them to fulfill my request, whatever it was. They made it clear that they were understaffed and things were "crazy," so I understood why it took them so long to help me sometimes. I will say that with only a few exceptions, every employee of that hospital was cheerful & friendly. Even the cleaning lady was a sweetheart! I did have one nurse who was very loud and pushed my pain med into my IV so fast that it hurt me. I asked her to slow down the next several times she did it. She worked a 12 hour shift, and by the time it was coming to an end, she was forgetful and pretty out of it. It's a shame that they work their employees so hard (or at least her), because patients suffer as a result. They served me food that they should not have, given my type of surgery, but I expected this to happen, because others had told me it would. I got lucky, though, because the dietitian happened to come into my room and I discussed this issue with her at length. She thought it was ok to offer VSG patients full liquids (including cream of wheat) if they were feeling ok, I told her it was not ok, that we were supposed to be strictly on clear liquids, and she understood. Overall, my stay at POH was not too bad. I found the floor I was on to be nicely laid out, the rooms were fairly large, and so were the bathrooms. Both were nicely decorated, as well, with pretty tile in the bathroom and wood floors in the rooms. I would go to POH again.

Comments: My doctor was a awesome doctor and did a great job but the post op recovery time in my room was terrible. i felt none of the nurses knew what the hell they were doing and it was VERY UNSANITARY. the nurses were very loud and made lots of noise at night so i was unable to sleep. i had to beg them to clean the bathroom which was covered in blood from the roommate next to me. i was to only have CLEAR LIQUIDS the day after surgery and they brought me cream of wheat. i had to always ask for my pain meds and was treated completely TERRIBLE. i DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOSPITAL TO ANYONE!!!!!!

How Selected: My physician performs surgeries there.
Competitors: Terrible.
Comments: The staff in OR were great. While on the floor I received better care from the nurse aids than I did the nurses, and I'm a nurse. The staff acted like they had never heard of this surgery before, when I would tell them why I was there they would have this blank look on their face. So I would tell them about VSG. They were slow to respond to request for pain med. My breakfast tray that was to be delivered on my first post-op day arrived at 10:30 after repeated request by my family. I wanted to drink so I could be discharged since this is a prerequisite. They do not room patients as they should, my first roomate had mental problems and thankfully signed out AMA. So after she left they decided I was getting another roomate and preceded to clean the room at 2:00 am. They never arrived. The next am they put a Pneumonia patient in the room with me. As you know that is a no-no, you never put anything like that in with a fresh surgery patient. A nurse aid NOT NURSE caught the mistake and told the nurses. They moved that patient. At that time I did not care because I was getting out of there. I do not want to scare anyone away from having there VSG, just be sure to take a very outspoken family member or friend with you. With all I have said I am still happy with my surgery and would do it all over again.

How Selected: Bariatric Package deal for self pay patients. Anesthesia and surgery were excellent, but the post op care was the worst. They were unable to give me a private room and refused to move me from the most obnoxious room mate anybody could have been assigned. My room mate watched tv and talked on the phone loudly for 2 nights and slept with room lights on. Security even had to block a visitor who was hostile and high etc from trying to come back n the middle of the night to stay with her. I had post op nausea and vomiting, was left to dehydrate and was kept up for 2 days. I felt unsafe and was frightened, and had no privacy as visitors from the other patient kept peering at me and were sitting on my side of the room. At one point I just sobbed, my husband contacted the nursing supervisor and they still didn't move me saying they were full. However, I passed empty rooms. I am sure my recovery didn't start off well because of my hideous care. Finally one nurse made them limit it to two visitors, let me get some sleep, saw to it I got proper fluids and I was able to be discharged day 3.
Competitors: Most of the staff appeared not to have a clue about post op care for bariatric patients. I kept getting offerred carbonated beverages . My IV dried up, clotted off and I was so dehydrated, I had to stay an extra night in that awful environment. One nurse actually asked me if a doctor wanted me to have the sleeve gastrectomy or I chose to have it myself and wondered if I had understood what I was getting done. Same idiot offerred me Tylenol po first night, but I had to beg for ice chips and didn't even have a water pitcher bedside.
Comments: Horrible experience. My assigned room mate was very loud, had drunk/drugged visitors who overflowed onto my side and blocked me from ambulating to the bathroom. In the middle of the night when I walked to the bathroom, I found another patient's bloody drainage all over the toilet seat and had to go to the nurse's station to request them to clean it up so I could use it. Gross!!! I wouldn't let my dog recover in an environment as disgusting as that one.

How Selected: It's one of two teaching hospitals (the other is North Oakland Medical Center) that my surgeon uses at a greatly reduced cost to the patient.
Competitors: Have to say that it was not nearly as spacious and updated as most of the hospitals here in Portland, Oregon, but it was clean and the staff was very courteous.
Comments: My stay was short... less than 24 hours... but I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The building is older, but quite clean. The bed could have been a little larger.
