How Selected: This was honestly the only hospital I could have my surgery at due to Insurance reasons, so the decision was made for me.
Competitors: Very Good.
Comments: The staff was great with an exception of 1 or 2, but I believe you will get this response anywhere. My only complaint was that I repeatly asked for an additional pillow for splinting my stomach when coughing, and I never recived one my entire hospital stay.

How Selected: This was the only hospital I was told that my doctor used.
Competitors: It's like going back to 1950 and has a spirit of death that hangs over it like a thick fog.
Comments: They turned their heads to obvious problems for the all mighty dollar. I'm glad to hear they have discontinued their WLS program w/ Dr. Schriver. As far as I know he was the only one that they allowed to do those surgeries. We felt like we were thrown to the wolves with them. Their response to us was always that we should take it up with our doctor.

Comments: If this will save one life it is worth it. Please stay away from Dr. Peter "Dr. Death" Schriver and Palmetto Baptist Hospital. Do your homework and see what his death toll is.

Comments: My thoughts about this hospital have greatly changed since they cancelled my surgery 9 days before I was scheduled to have it. They decided on 8/27/03 that is was not cost effective for them to continue to allow Dr Shriver(who I have the upmost respect for) to no longer perform gastric by-pass surgery there as of that day. I thought hospitals were non profit and their concern was for their patients. I guess I was wrong. This has put a hardship on me because I live close to Dr Shriver and the hospital. Now I have to start all over again somewhere else. I think the hospital should have at least had the compassion to allow Dr Shriver to perform the surgeries that were already scheduled. They should have thought about the individual people this was affecting and not about their own administrative salaries.

How Selected: I chose this hospital because it is convenient to where I live, but also because of previous experience. I have always had excellent care here, both as a patient, and as a visitor, when my best friend was hospitalized for several weeks before her death.
Competitors: I like the small town feel of this hospital even though the hospitals in Greenville have always been good too. And I think the staff was very caring and very sensitive to my needs.

How Selected: My Dr. Only goes to this hospital
Competitors: I would go back to this hospital before I would step foot back in Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Comments: The nursing staff before surgery and after was GREAT!! I never seen housekeeping tho.. I was in the hospital for 4 day's and 3 nights. During my 4 day stay my bed was only changed once. I had a problem with one nurse. She was not a nice person and didn't want to help me with ANYTHING..MY comment to her is Your in the wrong field lady.

How Selected: This was the hospital where my surgeon preferred to do the surgery. It was also one that was on the list for my insurance company.
Competitors: I would say it is the same as any other hospital.
Comments: For the most part the hosptial and nurses were good. THere is always one nurse though who makes the stay miserable. I had that nurse (of course) that took nearly 2 hours to bring me pain meds, let my dressing bleed through my gown before my mother finally had to change it, and couldn't figure out how to do the disharge paperwork. Other than that one shift though, the nurses were very attentive and caring. I didn't sleep at night much, so the nurses kept checking on me and didn't mind at all putting me to bed so late. I will say that post-op they did nothing they said they would. The nutritionist and the nurse you interview with post-op all assure you that they will check up on you every month for hte first year. It is 7 months later and I have yet to hear from either of them!

How Selected: My surgeon does all of his bariatric procedures there.
Competitors: It is comparable with other hospitals in the area although Easley is much smaller than the metropolitan Hospitals of Greenville
Comments: I think considering that this hospital has only been involved in bariatric surgeries for the past year is doing a remarkable job in trying to accomodate the needs of these patients. As in most places the majority of the staff is very sensitive to the needs of the overweight paatient as well as the psycho social aspect. I felt assured that my doctor and the hospital could take care of any emergency needs that may have arisen. In regards to privacy I had to end up in a semi-private room because the hospital census was full. They still allowed my daughter to stay with me and were very helpful in accomodating any need she had in taking care of me. The pain medication was more than adequate and they were concerned that perhaps I was not taking enough so even though it was to be self administering they continued to check that my needs were being met. The hospital was more than accomodating with visitors considering I had a very large number of family and friends to support me day of surgery as well as throughout my stay. All of my general needs were met and the parking accomodations were quite qdequate. I would rate the overall value of this hospital in my surgery case a very positive experience.
