| Dr Elliot Goodman, my surgeon used this hospital.
When I went into surgery there was a staff member with cardboard boxes stocking the shelf, not in scrubs!.. In the surgical room, how sanitary can that be? who knows where UPS boxes have been? |

If you would like to be told to get a grip and stop crying in pain post op RNY (this was in the intensive care unit) then this is the hospital for you.
In ICU my oxygen monitor alarm was beeping, loudly, the staff would come in and smack the machine; they said oh it does that sometimes. :o Yes, because my pulse oxygen was very low. Low 80’s I was in danger. Smack the machine, stop the sensor, still doesn't help my situation.
I was told by the Rn to stop crying on (I guess my crying was taking her away from her coffee break) or she would call the doctor. Is that supposed to be a threat? CALL HIM! Hurry! Pain on a scale of 1-10 was a 12 I have had many surgeries in my life, I am familiar with pain, and this was like a knife in the center of my chest. I was trying Lamaze breathing, nothing helped. Percoset was not stretching from one dose to the next.
I was fine the 1st 24 hours on the morphine pump, once that was removed I was in a great deal of pain. Percoset would pain relief would last 2 1/2 --- 3 hours at best. I was discharged without a dose of pain medication, it 9 minutes too early for a dose, they gave me a script and told me to go to the pharmacy down the street. So I was doubled over in the front seat of our car in pain with my 2 young children in the back seat crying everytime I cried, my husband stood in line at CVS getting my Rx filled. It took 27 minutes It was the longest 27 minutes of my life. we were 155 miles from home.
**** a few weeks later I was admitted to this hospital again, I should have taken my chances somewhere else. this time I wasnt in ICU, I was on a regular floor I couldn’t keep even water down, it was the night of my son’s birthday , I stuck it out at his party then drove 2 1/2 hours to go back to the hospital, afraid that my local hospital wouldn’t know what to do. 2001 this was still a fairly new surgery. It was 9 pm at this point, I went straight to the hospital floor, I was told to undress pointed to a bed told to wait there, it was a full house and they were busy. 90 mins later the nurse came in with IV fluids, I was shivering, in a hospital gown and a sheet. I was told they were out of blankets and pillows; I would have to wait 24 hours until they were restocked. No kidding. I felt like I was a charity case in a 3rd world country. I had great insurance; I could have gone to any hospital in the world. (Take my advice and go somewhere else!) Anywhere else. Buzz a nurse, they say WHATTTT, not may I help you, buzz.... WHATTTT. I couldn't answer because I couldn’t breathe. After a while my roommate buzzed them and said I couldn't breathe ((Thank you again to that nice little old lady who did that for me)) they sent a Patient Assistant to see what my problem was, she yelled for help. Next thing I remember I had a nebulizer attached to my face and all of the nurses on the floor asking me if I was ok. Are you ok honey?
We are consumers and a hospital is a hired service. Do your best to go where you will be treated well. Thank you OH for giving us a place where we can read about what really happens in the facilities where we spend our hard earned money.
It is important to pick a great surgeon, but the surgeon should also choose a decent hospital.
A few weeks later I complained in writing to the hospital administration, of course they went unanswered. |

| Selected the surgeon first. This was his primary hospital. As an added plus, it is also the primary hospital for my primary physician, so she was able to visit me in the hospital post-op. |

PVH is under-rated, mostly due to a poor reputation from years ago. While it is not quite at the level of some others in the area (Valley & HUMC), it has come a long way, and after a family member spent several weeks in PVH earlier in the year, I was impressed with the nursing staff and the hospital in general. |
| Comments: |
Overall, the hospital was very good. The only problem I had was with one aide who was insensitive and rude. (I have written a complaint to the hospital bout her.) Other than that, I was very happy with PVH. |

I have seen better hospitals. This hospital is a little outdated and needs some improvements. |
| Comments: |
The staff there were very ffriendly. One of the nurses that took care of me had had the surgery herself and was very compassionate. There was another nurse there that refused to call Dr Goodman to increase my pain meds on my PCA my very first day out of surgery. I told her where to get off. |

I loved the day shift nurses--the evening shift seemed WAY overburdened, and not able to be as responsive as I could've asked for. |

Actually, from the hospitals in my area, it was a great hospital. |
| Comments: |
Ok, I will start with the bad...1)nurses did not inform me why my surgery was a few hours delayed, just let us sit there 2)I had a screaming 80 year old woman in my room the whole stay
The nurses were good...checked on me often, especially 2 nurses were wonderful...too bad I forgot their names. I would have actually prefered to have oral medication than the morphine pump, since it did nothing for me, but that is what I had gotten.
There was a variety in "jello" given...and constantly gave me ice chips which I loved.
They had a HUGE wheelchair to wheel me out in, the hospital staff was great, but "general visitors" were bad with the "dirty looks" because this huge fat girl was rolled out in the fat person chair :-) |

I would rate it an 8. |
| Comments: |
I only had one bad experience and that was in the recovery. I have an internal morphine pump and because of this they were not too attentive with my pain. The nurse was quite rude and told me to basically deal with it. I reported it to the hospital only to receive a letter saying that they found nothing wrong with the treatment. Well I find it wrong to allow a person to lay there having pain past 10. |
