How Selected: It is part of the package from The Endobariatric Surgery Center. (Dr. Alvarez)
Competitors: It was older than US hospitals, but still clean and well maintained.
Comments: The showers were closed up so it was somewhat stale, but the accomadations were adequate for my procedure. The language barrier was non-exhistant due to a translation sheet you are given and your nurse Christina who stays with you most of the time. An added bonus was that as I had to walk the halls, they still had a nursery so we could see newborns! Overall it was old but clean and well maintained.

How Selected: I did not select the hospital so much as I selected the surgeon. Dr. A. represents the pinnacle, as far as I am concerned.
Competitors: It is older than the hospitals I am familiar with, but there is really nothing I can add that has not already been said...
Comments: Dr. A.'s package is the single best deal out there for someone as skilled as he, and I would travel almost anywhere to use him again, should I need. The wing he has control of is recently remodeled and quite sufficient for the time spent there.

Comments: As advertised this is an older medical facility- think office building instead of what Americans think of a hospital. I reminded me of older VA hospitals or clinic. The cleaning staff takes their jobs very seriously and each shift cleaned everything completely. The new rooms DR A has for his patients are very nice, the bed was comfortable and I was able to sleep great each night.

How Selected: This is the hospital my Dr. works out of.
Competitors: There is no comparrison....In the States.....Sure the hospitals are pretty, nice and some are clean...but this hospital went way above my expectations....It may be on the older side, but it was spotless! VERY clean! I suppose the only complaint I can voice is...the night nurses mainly speak spanish, so at times it was hard to communicate, even with the "cheat sheet." It all worked out though!
Comments: I was extremely pleased with this hospital. VERY CLEAN!!!! Did I mention CLEAN?

How Selected: It is where my physician did his surgery
Competitors: It is like a small 20-30 bed community hospital
Comments: The hospital is very well staffed with well educated people. It is very clean. The equipment is slightly old but very functional. The care given to you is not rushed or hurried and you really feel that your care providers are there just for you. There are four new suites for the patients of Dr. A that are very nice. Computer, flat screen tv and beautiful marble bathroom.

Competitors: The staff was wonderful, now the hospital was a little dated, but the suite that we stayed in was state of the art. Hardwood floors, flat screen computer, newly renovated bathroom, with marble tile, and cable t.v. with HBO and Cinemax

How Selected: Dr. Alvarez does all of his surgeries there.
Competitors: I've never been to another hospital in Mexico.
Comments: A paper Dr. A gives you prior to surgery lists MANY common phrases and words: English to Spanish. There were two or three times I was unable to communicate with a nurse and Imentioned that to Susan who is greatly interested in feedback, so I'm sure there will soon be an updated Translation Sheet. The hospital was very clean and the nurses were very friendly and attentive.

How Selected: This is the only hospital my surgeon operates out of.
Competitors: This was my first time in a hospital in this area.
Comments: The hospital was a little old but very clean. The nurses were prompt about pain and nausea meds and I never had to use my call button. They are currently remodeling several suites for bariatric patients which looked very nice and large. Walking the halls was a little strange because it was such a short hall but all the nurses were very friendly and everyone wanted to make you as comfortable as possible!

How Selected: After seeing my friend get abysmal care in the US, I chose to go with Dr. Alvarez who works at this hospital.
Competitors: Much, much more attentive care!
Comments: Yes, it's true that it is not state-of-the-art, but it was very good. All rooms are private, with a bed or daybed for your guest to stay with you overnight. The doctor visited frequently to check on me and even came back at midnight to see how I was doing. Dr. A. visited me frequently--I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and threw up tons--he kept coming back to see me, to try different meds, etc. He even came back at midnight the 1st night to see how I was. The next nigh he came back at 10:30 PM to check on me. This was after having come in 3-4 times during the day. I was worried about pain--I've never had surgery before and I have a condition wthat sends out incorrect messages about pain making it worse than it is. Any time I complained about pain (and there wasn't much at all-I was just scared it would get worse), he immediately get me more meds. When I mentioned I felt acid reflux, he said that he had already given me something for it, but, again, immediately got me something stronger. Someone else who was a surgical nurse posted that he was the gentlest surgeon she had met and that that was important because he wasn't rough during the surgery, allowing for better healing. Dr. A. has done over 300 VSG's (mmore than most doctors in the US) and has a 0% leakage rate-something most US doctors cannot say. He is less invasive in terms of follow-up testing (swallow and leakage tests), does not use a drain as some other surgeons use, and is very comforting. Susan told me that He no longer uses Heparin and I was a bit concerned about clots, but had been equally concerned about internal bleeding (happened to my mother--they couldn't get the right balance), so I asked him about that---he uses something similar to Heparin that has a lower molecular weight (nope, have no idea what that means) that allows the blood to thin enough to prevent clots, but not so thin that bleeding might occur. He even showed a website that explained it. Also, no US doctor has someone like Susan (his assistant/liaison/facilitator/don't know what to call her) that you can call at ANY time (she carries the phone with her even on weekends!) with questions. In addition, she called me the day before I left for Mexico, which was a Saturday, to see if I had any last-minute concerns or jitters. The day I left the hospital I went to the bathroom and dried blood came out in the stool--I was nervous about and I asked my DDP to call Susan who within seconds told us that it was normal and what might happen over the next few days. If this was a US doctor, I would leave a message and I would be lucky to get an answer that day. She also called, again on a Saturday, after the surgery because she had not heard from me to make sure everything was okay. Sadly, that just doesn't happen here in the US. Another bonus of going to Mexico is that you get a private room and whoever goes with you can sleep in your room. This was not only a great comfort to me (not being alone in the hospital), but also a great help considering how many times I was throwing up-the nurses come quickly, but there's not much lead time for that. When I was there, they were renovating some rooms for bariatric patients--don't know when that will be done.

How Selected: I chose this hospital because of the surgeon and the price of my surgery.
Competitors: I am not familiar with any other local hospitals in that area. I am unable to make this comparison.
Comments: The hospital was very old-fashioned and definitely different than what you would find in the US. It wasn't terrible, just different. There were only about 30 rooms and they all streched out in one long hallway. None of then nurses spoke English so there was definitely a language barrier. Luckily my friend and I both took some Spanish in school, and I had a Spanish-English Translation book with me. We managed to get all our needs addressed even though it was a challenge at times. The nurses all wore the white hats and uniforms with navy blue vest. They would come into the room with all of their things on a small silver tray. The used mercury thermometers to take our temperature, self-capped all their needles and used cotton balls dipped in alcohol instead of alcohol wipes. The nurses were always gentle when taking blood, giving meds, etc. Even though we weren't able to make friendly conversation, they were very pleasant and my needs were met. The cleaning staff also came into our room multiple times to empty trash cans, wipe down counters, and mop the floor. Even though the style of care was different, my needs were met fairly quickly and efficiently. To me, that is what matters the most! Plus Dr. Alvarez was absolutely wonderful!!!

Competitors: It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but who needs them when the care givers are so amazingly on top of all of it? No complaints of anything with me. It was a wonderful experience.
Comments: Very clean and sterile. Protocol was always followed on the hour and the entire staff was so compassionate for the care of their patients.

Competitors: I feel it is adequate compared to most hospitals in Mexico
Comments: I was extremely nervous about this hospital and going to Mexico in general. Now, 5 days later, I can say my fears were unwarranted. The Doctor was fantastic, the hospital wonderful, the nurses were caring. There was a language barrier, but the sheet the Doc gave us to communicate made it much, much better. There wasn't anything I wasn't able to communicate. The cost can't be beat and I am so happy I went to have this done!!
