About this Hospital
A brand new, beautiful hospital...will blow your mind as you're walking through the halls. Portsmouth Naval Hospital offers EVERY service imaginable...there's nothing I can think of that they don't have. The surgeons have limited time in the OR so surgeries are a bit slow but it happens, eventually. WLS surgery wait is 12-18 months now from what I understand. It's SO worth the wait. Dr. Spencer and his staff are wonderful and they focus on aftercare like nobody's business. If you're in the area and are eligible...or if you're overseas looking for a doctor on the mainland, please consider Portsmouth Naval Hospital, I can assure you, you won't regret it.

Competitors: Compared to Langley AFB, it was more modern!
Comments: I checked in and the place that I got my IV put in and got ready for surgery was wonderful. The surgeons and nurses walking around were all pleasant and reassuring - even though they werent my nurse or surgeon. After surgery, the intensive care unit was amazing. I was kept well informed and medicated. They were always there to check on me that I never used the call button the whole 24hrs I was in there! They were happy, had a good sense of humor, and took care of everything. There was no embarrassment for being in such a condition. I was actually sad to go from there.. Things went downhill from 4f. There are some bad ones in there you need to watch out for - 2 asians and one old nurse. I had to use the call button so many times to remind them my IV machine was beeping empty or I needed meds. There was actually an incident where there was a nurse walking by in our room and I asked her to remove a strap from my slippers so I could go to the bathroom (by myself) and she actually told me that she would go get MY nurse! I couldnt believe she couldnt go out of her way just to do it with one hand. I was so glad to leave 4F. Other than that the hospital was great!

Comments: My stay here was extra long -- one of the longest post gastric bypass as I was here for a week straight. The staff was great, between the step down unit and ward 4-F, they were always there for every need I had. I couldn't have asked for better care than what I recieved at Portsmouth Naval.

How Selected: I didn't. My husband is in the Navy. I chose not to use Tricare Standard and go on the outside because I trust Portsmouth for my medical needs, as I would any civilian hospital.
Competitors: Comparable.
Comments: The hospital was fine. 4F, where you are put after the ICU, could be a little more tailored to the GBP patient or have us all in one section or something. My room had 4, yes 4 beds in it. Luckily, I was the only one in that room. I might have been fairly uncomfortable if there were 3 others. (ie: 4 TVs on, 4 phone conversatoins, 4 peoples visitors...etc.) While Portsmouth offers an awesome nutrition class, I think that a Bariatric Eating class would be wonderful for post ops.. :-)

How Selected: Tricare Prime will not allow the surgery elsewhere if you live around here.
Competitors: I don't know about any of the other local hospitals but PNH was wonderful and much better than I had even hoped.
Comments: Other than one Ensign that I had when I moved to 4F, the staff was very nice and polite not to mention supportive. Everytime I got up to walk I had supporters telling me how good I was doing and how shocked they were by it. It made me feel even better and I walked often because of it.

Competitors: Very much the same as Beach General or Norfolk General. The Navy finally has a real hospital!
Comments: The staff was all really helpful and pleasant. The nurse and corpsmen in the step down were great. The only bad point was having to share a room with 3 other people. I prefer privacy.

How Selected: I didn't have any major problems with Portsmouth. The only thing that I did have trouble with, was while I was in ICU, my 'nurse call' button didn't work and I had to call out and yell for a nurse about 11pm the first night. But the nurses/corpman were all very nice.
Competitors: This was the only time I have ever stayed in a hospital.
Comments: I didn't get a choice in the matter, because of having Tri-Care but for the most part I did enjoy my stay at Portsmouth.

How Selected: I am a military dependant, and didn't have any choice. Even if I had been given a choice, I still would've picked Portsmouth Naval.
Competitors: Second to none. The facility is excellent and easily exceeds standards of many other local hospitals.
Comments: OK....I work at PNH on ward 4F. I stayed in the SDU on the night of my surgery and there were several aspects of the care I received that I was not happy with (IV fluids and PCA pain medication running out, and not being replaced for quite some time). I was not assisted to walk until around 11:30 that night, after originally planning with the nurse that the walking would take place around 10pm. Of course, it was the nurse that relieved her, that ended up walking with me. The morning after my surgery, my care was provided solely by the HM. My nurse stated that he would see me only if the HM ran into something he couldn't handle. I thought that was very unprofessional, especially since I am staff at the hospital. I was transferred to 4F on the afternoon after my surgery, and the care was much, much better. Staff gave me my privacy, and tended to my needs in a timely manner. Thanks so much to LPN Mundy, RN Fisher, RN Santos, RN Snow, LT Allen, HN Jackson, HN Collver, HN Moore, HN Parks, my buddy Lisa Morris, and the rest of the 4F staff...........you guys ROCK!

Comments: Portsmouth Naval Hospital is one of the finest military hospitals in the country. My care was very good, however, there are a few exceptions. My first nurse on 4F was a total ditz. She hooked up my IV, and it wasn't even flowing. When I let her know this she was like "Oh I'll take care of it." Well 3 hours later I'm still without fluids and becoming a little dehydrated. My surgeon came in, and had a little talk with that nurse. Needless to say, I didn't see her again the rest of my stay. Other than that, my care was well attended to.

I am glad that I decided to stay & not go the civilian route. Dr.'s Lord & Fontana were outstanding & did a great job. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I would highly recommend to anyone.
