|
|
| Potomac Hospital’s Weight Loss Surgery Center |
|
At Potomac Hospital you’ll find what patients need in a Weight Loss Surgery Center. High numbers of surgeries. Low complication rates. Comprehensive programs before and after surgery. Promotion of patient safety.
Plus, as an American Society for Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, Potomac Hospital’s Weight Loss Surgery Center offers a demonstrated track record of maintaining the highest standards in laparoscopic gastric banding and gastric bypass surgery.
An Experienced Surgical and Medical Team
Weight loss surgeons Dr. Denis Halmi and Dr. Daniel Tran (www.virginiaweightlosssurgerycenter.com) have more than 20 years of combined experience in weight loss surgery and perform more than 300 procedures each year at Potomac.
They are members of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and have gained international acclaim for their expertise. They also have significant experience in revisional weight loss surgery for patients who have regained weight after a prior bariatric procedure.
To help you and your family understand the consequences of surgery, we offer free information seminars, education before and after surgery, and a support group for patients and others who are thinking about having surgery. Plus, an experienced and dedicated group of medical specialists for pulmonary, GI, cardiology, and radiology needs.
Convenient Virginia location in Washington, D.C. suburbs
The suburban campus of Potomac Hospital is easy to find along I-95 at Exit 156, just 25 miles south of Washington, D.C., in Woodbridge, Virginia.
We opened our new patient care facility in early 2006. All rooms are private, single-occupancy. Each patient room also has a sitting area with a couch or sleep chair that can be used as a bed for an overnight visitor, plus soothing décor and large windows for natural light.
Potomac Hospital participates with many managed care insurance companies and most major commercial insurance plans. Expert help is available for insurance pre-approval.

The Bariatric Program at Potomac Hospital is new. I think that they did a good job managing my care; however, with any other program with time they will improve. I feel that Fair Oaks offers better care, but that is because there program has been in place for an extended period of time. |

My stay at this hospital was a good experience. It was complication free and the unit really catered to overweight patients. The staff was very caring, and the rooms were really nice; hardwood floors, flat screen TV's and they all were private rooms. They even had a bed in the room for my husband to stay overnight, which was really comforting to have him there. |

| Potomac Hospital is a PPO hospital under my Federal BC/BS insurance. My WLS surgeon obviously, was a huge factor and since he is affiliated with this hospital, I trusted that it would be a great place. |

I've been in 3 of the area hospitals: Mary Washington (which is HORRIBLE), Potomac, and Fair Oaks; I thought Potomac was quite great. |

Not as good as Northern Virginia Hospital Center. |
| Comments: |
I am pleased with two exceptions. I had rude, uncaring treatment in Registration. They were short of staff one day when I came to get some tests done and pulled a woman in from another area. She treated me with contempt, ignored me to speak on personal topics with her friends and was simply uncaring. I had to report her to the woman in charge.
In addtion, I was startled when a woman from the billing department entered my room as I was preparing to check out and told me I had a $100 co-pay that must be paid before I could leave. I was unaware of this and did not bring a credit card or check book to the hospital. Thank goodness my daughter was with me and we used her credit card to cover that cost. It was very distrubing for somone who just had surgery. This should have been addressed in a diffferent manner. |

I would have to say this is the best hospital I have stayed in or been to so far. The rooms were spacious and private. I was often tended to by staff when needed and only had one incident when my nurse button fell to the floor and I messed up my IV by trying to get out of the bed on my own. Other than that I definitely give this hospital an A+ |

I can't compare with local hospital's in VA but the only other surgery experience I had (Torrance, CA 2001) was not as nice. Potmac has new facilities with private rooms. The staff is very quiet and considerate in entering the room for all the checks. |

Several of the nurses were great. Bridget, Ophelia, Renee and Sharon were excellent. The nurse trainees were very good as well, except for one who was left on her own for too much and panicked when I became very ill. I ended up waiting nearly 2 hours for antiemetics and pain medicine because she was MIA. Other than that, my experience was good. |

Overall I thought the nursing staff was great. The night nurse Connie was probably the best nurse I have ever had. The day nurse was mediocre at best...not very response. At one point I was told I couldn't get the pain medicine that actually helped because she was at lunch...WHAT?? The CNAs were excellent, one of which also works in my Dr's office so it was nice to see her. |

I was so impressed with the surgical nurses. They took time to calm me down when I was distressed about feeling so bad. Offered to do small things, like wash my hair, cool wash cloths, bring popsicles, etc. My comfort was their priority, and I felt it. They have respect for Dr. Halmi and Deanna the dietician, and they work as a team with the nurses. I've never felt so well cared for in a hospital. I can't stress enough how wonderful my stay was. Then upon leaving, the paperwork was minimal and took all of 3 minutes! |

The surgery wing was set up as semi-private rooms. Even though I paid the extra $80/day for a private room, they still needed to put another person in with me. While walking, I found one hall over where there were private rooms which seemed to remain empty. |
| Comments: |
When their new building is complete, all their rooms will be private. Until that time, I would not opt to use this facility. The day-shift nurses during my stay were great; however, the night-shift nurses took a long time to respond. |

| This hospital is the surgeon choice. I did not have a choice in which one to use. |

This is my first surgery besides having childern. I think the parking lot needs some major thinking. You do have to park a ways away. And the visiting hours need to be ajusted to earlier. They wouldn't let my hubby in till noon and I know that other hospitals say visting starts at 8 am. |

The nurses are great. They responded real quickly to any request. I was please with them. |

I dont know of other local hospitals as I've not been to them myself recently. Dewitt was very good in 1986 |

I felt this was an overall good experience as we can have. Considering the surgery we have opted for, they did a great job. I do not remember anything after they gave me an IV injection of something that just put me right to sleep. When i woke up i did NOT have that nausea usually associated with anesthesia. Plenty of pain meds delivered by a pump. The only problem being on one late shift it was hard to get someone to help go to the bathroom. Well, when she finally got there 45 min later I told her I was about to call my doctor's answering service to page him. Let me tell you, that did not happen again. I was NOT an overly demanding patient. I just needed help getting put of bed on the 1st 2 days. It was great getting pain meds for home also. I did not use them long and am feeling wonderful so far.

| My surgeon worked out of this and another hospital that was farther away. I selected Potomac because it was closer. |

TERRIBLE! The nursings staff needs a lot to be desired... |
| Comments: |
I was not treated well in this hopspital. When I needed assistance getting out of bed, there were 3 nurses/staff in my room staring at the other patient (but not helping her) and they stood there ignoring the fact that I was crying b/c I was unable to get out of bed. No one would help me. In fact, when I finally asked for help, they said they'd "get my nurse"... In addition, I ran a very high temperature the 2nd night of my stay. Instead of notifying a doctor, they simply "recorded it" and told me I needed to cough and walk more (both of which I was already doing)...My mother was afraid to leave me alone overnight as the nurses appeared to be indifferent and inattentive. Fortunately, by morning the fever broke, but it was just good luck as the nursing staff did not do anything to manage my situation. |

I think this hospital compare well with other hospitals in the local area. I feel they are under staffed but the staff they have does a good job under the circumstances. |
| Comments: |
I have used this hospital many times and will continue to use them in the future. |

This was the first time I stayed in a hospital in this area. |
| Comments: |
Although the staff tried to be helpful, I think they have too many patients to care for. One morning I had to wait a half hour for help to get out of bed so that I could go to the bathroom. |
