Comments: 2 things that bothered me about my visit with PSL. One, when in post-op recovery the nurse was very rude. I was pain of course and she did at the beginning give me pains meds, but after a while, I felt ignored and was moaning and crying. She did nothing to attend to my needs. It was only later after going up to my room that my wonderful nurse there told me that post op has to withold pain meds for at least 30 minutes before they can take you upstairs. Had the recovery nurse told me that I would have been fine. But no communication and no attentiveness is awful and substandard. Second, on my last day there, my oral pain med order had changed and the nurse took at least an hour to come in and give it to me. Then when I was ready to leave, had my things all packed she was nowhere to be found. I waited at least another hour before she came to help and then it wasn't even my nurse, it was a gal from another floor. I know she was busy and had many people leaving the same day but simple communication would have helped.

How Selected: It's the hospital my surgeon works out of. I did choose this hospital over one other with another surgeon because it is newer and has more advanced technology.
Competitors: Very similar. There are TONS of hospitals in the area, some newer & most older, but all considered excellent.
Comments: Most rooms in the area--and this hospital-- are private (one patient per room), but I got put in a very large room with another patient, which felt too open and not at all private. All but one of my nurses was outstanding, and the hospital staff and doctors were all helpful, compassionate, and knowledgeable. They are very good with families waiting, and and have a patient tracking system that allows family members to look up on computers in the waiting area to see exactly where a patient is throughout the day of surgery.

How Selected: The surgeon I chose for gastric bypass uses this hospital for all of his surgeries. They have a Center of Excellence rating for the Bariatric program, so I felt good that things would go well.
Competitors: Overall I liked PSL much better than Saint joseph Hospital. Exempla is nice because all of the Kaiser paperwork is on computer and internal acess, but PSL was better organized, friendly and had better nursing than my past experiences with Saint Joseph in Labor and Delivery.
Comments: Most of the stay was just great with a few minor inconveniences. First, the AM Admissions area was a little confusing as to where to sign in since it's a hallway and needs updating, but it was all fine once I got going. Second, they did not have my pain meds set up when I got to the room following recovery, so i had to go without until they got it set up, but it was handled quickly by the Nurse Manager and there was no other problem with the nursing care after that. The only other thing was that they didn't explain to me how the meal ordering worked when I got to my room. Normally patients call Room Service themselves and order food when you were ready, but my first few meals came on their own and no one had said anything about calling to order meals. I did get every meal in a reasonable time, but just be prepared for ordering yourself as they may or may not explain it when you first get there. Overall it was a great experience and the super fast check out/discharge was a bonus.

How Selected: My surgeon uses this hospital, and my insurer required I use a hospital with a COE rating.
Competitors: Parts of this hospital are very nice -- the main floor, admissions, and the pre-op areas are sparkling clean. Once you get to your floor after surgery, you find out the hospital is really dingy and not very clean at all. My floor was sticky and never did get mopped. The RNS weren't very prompt about answering call buttons, and I only saw one nurse aide for the entire floor.
Comments: I would prefer not to use this hospital again. Fortunately, my insurer contracts with a different hospital, which has higher standards of cleanliness and enough nurses and nurse aides to provide good care to patients.

Competitors: This was excellent- however just like any other hospital today the nurses are over worked- they do 12 hour shifts and have about 36 pts on the floor with 3-5 nurses and 1 aide. However the staff they have are excellent.
Comments: They have great services for family staying over- have a motel they have contracted with and have discounts for meals for family members.

How Selected: It is the hospital my sergeon uses
Competitors: 8 months ago I had surgery at Porter hospital an it had a much more caring and professional atmosphere. I would prefer that hospital in the future if given a choice.
Comments: Some of the CNA's and nurses came off as being too busy to deal with me. The first time I asked when I should start walking after surgery because I was told as soon as possible the nurse said that she was too busy and had too many other patients to help me out of bed. I had one CNA as she was fixing my covers and sheets acutally flip the blankets over my head covering my face because she was nor paying attention. This same CNA was complaining about the nurse I had to another CNA in front of me which I found very unprofessional. Although these are some negative experiences there were others there with a very friendly and professional attitude.

Competitors: Increddible...the only hospital we've ever been to that didn't completely give us the creeps.
Comments: As far as the question about staff being responsive...I would have loved to have given an "excellent" mark on that one because I feel that I got the most increddible team of nurses while I was there...but there was one guy who was on a few times...this rude jerk of an aid fellow who made my mother feel in the way and he made really negative comments to her about inappropriate things...it almost made her cry...If you're ever staying on the 5th floor and Dan is assigned to help you...tell your nurse that you would prefer someone else..He brought the score down to a "good"

Competitors: Horrible, I will not go there again unless ABSOLUTLY necessay.
Comments: A couple of things stood out in my mind, don't get me wrong, the surgeon and his staff and all the people that worked on me before and during surgery were WONDERFUL, it's AFTER i got to my room that everything went down hill, the RN's were lousy, the CNA's should be getting paid what the RN's are, they did a whole heck of alot more work, the RN's NEVER wore gloves or took precautions when changing my dressings or IV needles, and it took one nurse 3 hours to write up a 1/2 page discharge note, they took forever doing ANYTHING, came in, took my drain out, she left for quite along time, had to call her BACK in to remove my IV, then left, then had to call her back in for other things,... when you hit the nurses button, they gave you the feeling of, what are you bothering us for, and I only called them a few times,.. I feel for the people that really needed them. geeeeeeeezh.

Comments: The hospital was wonderful. I had one nurse who was a nightmare. She didn't want to take my catheter out, after my Dr. had said it was okay. She wouldn't help me go for a walk even though my Dr. said it was very important. She yanked my drainage tube out and forgot that it was sutured in. She was the very worst!!! Other than her, my stay was dreamy.

Competitors: I am still partial to Rose Medical Center in Denver, I have always gotten superb treatment there. Presbyterian St Lukes is far better than Aurora Medical Center, where getting any type of patient aknowledgement is sheer of a miracle, especially in the emergency room.
Comments: The staff was very nice and for the most part accomodating to my needs, but not knowledgeable of the needs of bariatric surgical patients when it comes to taking pain meds, getting up and walking, and any pain associated with the surgery, however, the staff is very curious and looks to the patient for information regarding the surgery and education around it.
