Comments: Provena Mercy Bariatric floor is set up to meet the needs of the bariatric community. One downfall is that some of the other departments in this hospital are not as capable to handle this community. We have had problems for example trying to get a Ct or MRI done because the equipment radiology has does not always accomendate the morbidly obese. This is a situation I would to see resolved.

How Selected: Since I was having the surgery done by the Downer's Grove, IL WISH Center, they are partnered with Provena Mercy in Aurora, IL. I had my daughter at Provena Mercy in August 2004 and was extremely satisfied with them. I was very glad to hear this was going to be where the surgery would be performed. Not only was it's location convenient, but I had already had a wonderful experience with them in the past.
Competitors: I don't have any experience with any of the other local hospitals.
Comments: Nurses and everyone was wonderful. Beautiful new surgical facility. I love the fact that they have a specific bariatric wing.

How Selected: This was the closest hospital to my home that the Wish Center used.
Competitors: I would say that it was below average to my other local hospital's.
Comments: I can only say, that more of the staff there should think that if it was their family laying in that bed would they want them treated in the same manner that they treat their patients. They did not offer any help with changing my bedding, or help me clean myself up, if it wasn't for my family & husband being there I would have never been helped to the bathroom or to take a shower. I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 days and never once did I receive help in any of these matters. My own Mother offered to re-make my bed with clean linen if they would bring it to her and it never happened. Around 5 hours after my surgery they needed me to get up and move around for the first time, they offered no assistance getting out of my bed, of course I was a little sick from the medication, and very dizzy so I put the back of my legs against the bed to steady myself, big mistake as they did not have the locks on my bed and then the bed started to move and it made me jolt quit hard, needless to say that didn't feel too good!! I was happy that I got to go home on the 3rd day by 12:00, I got better care there then at Mercy!!

How Selected: This hospital is the one that the WISH Center uses for all of its surgeries. It has it's fourth floor dedicated to gastric bypass patients.
Competitors: They were very good and I would definitely go back to them again.
Comments: Dr Rosen and Provena Mercy were wonderful. I highly recommend them. The only complaint I had was when it took long to get my pain medication twice. The nurses were so busy that I had to wait quite a while till I received pain med. Other than that, it was a wonderful experience and my mom was in from out of town so she got to stay with me in the hospital for two days, even over night. They have a chair that folds out into a sleeper. Staff was very nice about her being there and it was wonderful to have support 24 hours a day from a loved one.

How Selected: This is the hospital that Wish Center uses.
Competitors: The only other hospital I have been in was Northwestern Memorial and that was for the birth of my son 15 yrs ago. It is an excellent city hospital. At first I was nervous about Provena Mercy the only hopital for the Wish Center because I lived in the northern suburbs. True to their word, Provena Mercy is outstanding when it comes to WLS and patients.
Comments: The short stay dept nurse (Margo) was wonderful. She was the calming influence before the storm. I was very happy with all the care I received during my stay. Every nurse, tech, aide etc. made sure that I was comfortable and responded to every need I asked for. Even the resp reps that came in the middle of the nite brought some humour into it....a mighty thanks to the WLS unit.

Comments: The 11-7 staff could you some manners! Felt that the night shift nursing needed to be more understanding of pain and not time. It was 15 min before my pain meds were due. The nurse made a rude comment and said I don't see how you could need them I just checked on you and you were sleeping. If she really would have looked I had my eyes closed trying to focus on something other than PAIN!!! The CNA's and Nurses on the 7-3 and 3-11 shift are great. ALso want to add the 11-7 nurse watched me struggle getting out of bed the very next day after surgery. A PG aide went to help and she told her not to! SO I thought she was going to help me. BOY I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!! HMMMM thought she could use the surgery herself!!!!

How Selected: This hospital was selected by the WISH Center, which performed my surgery.
Competitors: I have had some experiences (not realted to WLS surgery) at Hinsdale Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in the western suburbs of Chicago and Provena Mercy was far superior in both services and facilites to both these hospitals.
Comments: I can not say enough positive things about my experience here. The staff was excellent. They were attentive, concerned with pain managment and my comfort, accomodating to my visitors and sympatetic. They were just great. The facility was lovely, clean, even decorated well. They even had a place in my room for a guest to spend the night with me. I did not experience one negative aspect during my stay at Provena Mercy.

Comments: I think that they were great. I probably didn't walk as much as i've heard others, but I had breathing treatments for 2 days and used my spirometer several times daily. I was able to get sleep while I was there so that I was not overtired when I got home.

How Selected: WISH Center Illinois does all their surgeries there.
Competitors: This Hospital is the best in the area I've been to. My mother and father have both had illnesses for years. My mother passed away in 2001 and had spent a collective 50 to 60 nights in the hospital. Provena Mercy is the best Hospital I've ever been in bar none. The nurses were very fast every time I needed them. The Hospital was very clean and extremely well equipped for this surgery. My family was also very very comfortable and their cafeteria was excellent. So excellent my wife video taped it to show me how it looked. The reason this mattered is that I worried about my families comfort while I was in the Hospital.
Comments: Again I can't say enough. The Hospital was so excellent, I told my wife if I ever need major surgery for anything else I'd love to go to that Hopsital. I really can't say enough about the Hospital and the staff. They treated me better than I could have ever excpected based on my experience with several other Hospitals in the midwest.

Comments: I was very happy to learn the WISH Center uses Mercy Provena as it is closer to my home than their previous hospital affiliation. I was also THIRLLED to know the rooms are spacious and PRIVATE. That was important to me. My only additional comment is that, since WISH has only been at Mercy Provena for approx. 6 months, I did notice some of the nursing and tech staff were not as familiar with some of the conditions that follow a gastric bypass. Some questions they found difficult to answer. However, I believe it is only because it's a new function of their staff. In time, they will continue to grow in knowledge and competence to give GREAT care to their gastric bypass patients.
