How Selected: Surgeon practices here.
Competitors: Check-in process here was much more pleasant than at PRMC in Salisbury.
Comments: Overall, it was not a bad experience. I was concerned that because the procedure I went in for was not done due to a complication, the nursing staff did not really pay that much attention to me. I would call for assistance in getting out of bed (I still had the lap incisions) and most of the time my wait was longer than 45 minutes for someone to come, even after numerous calls. The nurses were not pro-active in getting me on my feet after surgery so I had to make sure that I got up and moved. The compression things on my legs were not always put on correctly, therefore did not work as well as they should. My incision sites were never looked at by any of the nurses, even though I expressed pain in one particular area. I have to agree with several other reviewers that it appears that some of the nurses "slipped" through the cracks and were able to get their certification when maybe they shouldn't have.

How Selected: My surgeon practives there
Competitors: I did not like how the "CCU" staff handled my post-op needs and issues. I would call and wait 20 min for a tech to come and ask what my issue was, and then another 20-30 min for the nurse to come. When the nurse finally got there, she was able to medicate me within 10 min. I am an RN and this is completely UNacceptable in my opinion, absolutely ridiculous. Especially for considering their level of care to be from a CCU. No way I'd consider them to be advocates for their patients!
Comments: There were a couple of staff members who I would request again, but for mystay to be in the Critical Care Unit for extra monitoring, well I have to disagree--the staff was not monitoring me, they were simply (and slowly) "responding" to my pleas for help. There was only ONE nurse who actually came in between my asking for help--she checked on me to make sure I was okay...

Comments: Not good on nausea meds. Generally, Pharmacy was a pain. Plus, short-staffed nurses. Over three days I had 3 great nurses out of 12. Most were average but some were worse. Hard to deal with during a period of such vulnerability.

How Selected: St Agnes was the hospital of choice through my insurance company with the bariatric program.
Competitors: I've been to several hospitals in Baltimore and in my own town of Hagerstown, St Agnes was by far the best I have been to. The staff was very efficient and answered every need. They were very pleasant and helpful.

How Selected: I work in health care and know several people in and out of healthcare that have had the surgery successfully at the same facility, with the same surgical team.
Competitors: My overall care/treatment there was no less than exceptional. I chose this facility over the one I am employed at for many years based on reputation and experience of others.
Comments: Skilled, caring, compassionate, and professional nursing staff made a painful and difficult procedure a lot easier than I ever anticipated. Kudos to the surgical team... their knowledge and experience was visible from pre-through-post surgery. I would recommend this facility and this surgical team highly and without hesitation!

Competitors: I would put St Agnes at the bottom of my list. I would much rather go to St. Joe's or GBMC.
Comments: The daytime nurses were wonderful, but the nighttime nurses were awful. I had to buzz them 3 or 4 times each time I had to use the restroom. One time, I had to unhook myself because no one came to help me. I was not happy at all and couldn't wait to go home.

Comments: I had a wonderful experience with St. Agnes. As soon as I was scheduled for a date, the hospital called and got my pre-op info. I went in for some testing & the nurses were great. On the day of my surgery, everything went so smoothly. I checked in, was taken back to change, received my IV, and my friend was allowed to sit with me until time to go. The anesthieslogist was very funny & calming. She gave me the drugs & the next thing I know they were whisking me away. the last thying I remember was being on a small table. They woke me up & I was being wheeled into my private room. Things are a little here & there cause of the excellent drugs, but even with the short staffing, the nurses did their best to accomidate my needs. I would recommend St. Agnes to anyone.

How Selected: It was the place where my surgeon practiced medicine.
Competitors: The pre-op experience was outstanding from admission to recovery room. It was downhill after that. The quality of care on the surgical floor was terrible.
Comments: The hospital provides good support pre-op and follow-up care after discharge...The care right after surgery is terrible. Hardly any of the nurses speak good English. There was no accommodation to help the obese patient get out of bed. My bed linens were not changed the whole time I was in the hospital. I was not offered a bath or assistance bathing, nor was I given a clean hospital gown until 2 hours before my discharge. I had to request a special commode for my room because the toilet was too low and then the commode was only emptied once a day if that. Thank God for my husband. No one offered to get me out of bed for a walk. Had I not taken the initiative myself, it would not have happened. I was very disappointed with the inpatient experience. I have discussed this matter with the surgical team and I am hoping to get a survey from the hospital regarding my experience.

How Selected: This is where my surgeon performs the bypass surgery. I liked him and was confident about the choice.
Comments: There were a few nurses who seemed to slip through the holes in the system to become a nurse. One mainly, a male, was just not useful at all. My iv's were always beeping, my pain meds too, and he wouldn't do anything till I had someone else come in. Plus the fact he didn't speak english very well.

Comments: Overall I had a good experience with St. Agnes. It wasn't really conducive to resting for me, between the pulse/ox thing that kept going off every time I moved and the people prodding me every hour or so. However the nurses were all lovely as were all the technicians.

Comments: I was on 4South The first day and night (while I wasn't able to get out of bed unassisted), I had to use the call button for 3 separate equipment issues - It took about an hour to resolve each one and involved multiple pages - two were resolved because I mentioned the issue to other staff who came into the room for other stuff. I was also in a room right next to the nurses station and found things to be very noisy. For all but the first overnight shift, the nurses responsible for my care were excellent. They did frequent checks and made sure that any concerns I had were addressed.

But spoke with a patient adovcate, she stated that if my roommate was discahrged I could request that my room be "closed". Well luck went my way, my roommate was discharged approximately 1 hour after my arrival and I requested a "closed" room, told them the patient adovcate said I could. and it was approved.

How Selected: My surgeon does his surgeries through St. Agnes.
Competitors: Received excellent care for the most part. There's always one or two nurses who are marginal at best, but overall I have asked for a better hospital experience. I've been a patient at 2 other hospitals and St. Agnes compared quite well.
Comments: I met many patients who had either had the surgery or knew someone who did and wanted to reassure me or wish me luck. Overall, the nurses and residents bent over backwards to accommodate, and, being a nurse myself, I can tell you we're not very easy patients! I was asked to please come back after a few months so that the staff could see ehow successful I'd been. I was very pleased with my experience.
