The Bridges Centre at St. Luke’s Medical Center

 About Bridges Centre

Another Success Story! The Bridges Centre for Surgical Weight Management at St. Luke’s Medical Center offers a surgery-based weight loss program to help patients lose the weight and keep it off. At the Bridges Centre, we go beyond the surgical procedure, and enlist you in a life-changing program that includes nutritional guidance, support groups and counseling services.

Along your journey to a healthier and more active lifestyle, there are bridges that must be crossed. Our program identifies some of the key bridges and helps you cross them. The Bridges Centre for Surgical Weight Management offers a coordinated treatment program under the direction of physicians, which gives patients the support needed in order to obtain their greatest weight loss potential. Our team includes the surgeon, psychologist, registered nurse, registered dietitian, respiratory therapist and physical therapist. The integration of these health services gives patients a comprehensive, emotionally sensitive and behaviorally effective program.

The experienced, board-certified surgeons specialize in the latest laparoscopic weight loss surgery procedures including the adjustable gastric band, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. The surgeons answer any questions you may have and explain the exact details of the procedure, the extent of the recovery period, and the reality of the follow-up care. An important part of the Bridges Centre process is a psychological evaluation, which helps establish a clear understanding of the postoperative changes in behavior essential for long-term success.

How Selected: The Dr. I had selected worked through the "Bridges" Program at St. Luke's Hospital.
Competitors: It is an older Hospital and in an area of Phoenix that is somewhat undesirable, other than location at the time of my surgery it was average.
Comments: In the year 2006 I returned and Dr. Zahn did a tummy tuck at the same hospital(St. Lukes) I prepaid for the surgery both to the dr. & Hospital. The hospital proceeded to charge me an extra $25,000 for my surgery nothing extra occured during my surgery , the hospital was just trying to make extra money!! would not reccomend since this happened.

Comments: I could have been dead for hurs before anyone would have known. No none ever asked me if I needed anything unless I called them and then I had to call twice. I never even recieved water & ice without asking. They never provided me with any toiletries, tooth brush etc. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life and at such a vulnerable stage I felt totally neglected and abandoned by the staff of this hospital.

Comments: The nursing staff during the week was good & I liked their treatment & service. The weekend staff was terrible, I would wake up to cold food, tv was so bad it was like not having one--bad reception. Nurses would listen to what I tried telling them during shower & Last, Not Once was my wounds under stomach changed & redressed.

How Selected: Dr. Juarez performs the surgery at this hospital.
Competitors: St.Luke's wasn't up to par compared to Scottsdale Shea Hospital. My insurance would have paid for either hospital however the surgeon at Scottsdale hospital is scheduling out to March 08.
Comments: I was in a room with a homeless woman. She was in the hospital for ulcers,etc..I felt since i had good insurance i should have been in a room with someone who had the surgery. I couldnt understand why i was in the bariatric ward however my neighbor didn't have the surgery. She bleed several times in the bathroom. I didn't have a good experience at all. I was also told we were to receive a goody bag. The goody bag consist of consist of a picture frame, sippy cup, sports bottle, baby spoon and fork. The nurses advised the goodie bag has been out of stock for three months. If you have a good health insurance and want the best hospital stay away from st. lukes!!!

Competitors: This hospital was better than I expected and my stay was comfortable.
Comments: I can't say enough good things about my night nurses, they were absolutely wonderful. My day nurse however didn't speak english that well and she seemed forgetful. I would have to remind her several times about my requests and she would apologize for forgetting. I paid extra for a private room so that my husband could stay with me in the hospital. However, after asking many staff members, we never received a recliner or fold up bed for him to sleep on. So needless to say, I was pretty upset that I had wasted $164 for a private room for nothing. Also, this is the nosiest hospital that I've ever stayed in. At 6am in the morning and at 9pm at night, there was someone outside my door vacuuming! Couldn't that have been done at a better time! I kept closing my door because of the noise and staff would walk in and say oh wrong room and walk out leaving the door open. This was very frustrating considering it was painful for me to get out of bed to close it again. The beds and most medical equipment are not for obese patients. I had to get two upper GI's and my body barely fit on the thing, so there was no room for my arms. And I'm one of the smaller bariatric patients. Clearly, the hospital needs to invest in machines build for overweight patients, if they are going to operate a bariatric wing.

Competitors: I once loved this hospital. I had stayed here on two other occasions with no bad feelings, but THIS time was a horror show!
Comments: Make certain that you demand what you NEED. Your visitors may end up feeling as though they are staff because the staff isn't around much. I was up to 22 hours immediately post op with no pain meds because they were leaking onto the floor...I was told over and over again after complaining of intense pain, that I shouldn't feel so awful. Then my SISTER saw the puddle, and the proverbial "you know what" hit the FAN.

Competitors: No, I have never been in one so bad, with the acception of Tempe St. Lukes
Comments: I didnt know much about the hospital going in and I wish I would have. The surgeon and nurses and everyone that helped PRE-OP were awesome! Very relaxing and answered all questions. My first few hrs after recovery were great. I had an awesome nurse. Then after she went home that night, the rest of the stay went downhill. I found the majority of the staff to be ignorant when it came to things my what I could or couldnt eat and when and so forth. Trying to get someone in my room was almost impossible. I had a breathing emergency (asthma attack) and it took me hitting the button and trying to talk to them four times. I guess they finally got the hint when I was unable to answer each time. It took them over 30 minutes to come check on me after I rang the first time. That to me is unnacceptable and down right incompentant. When I was asked by the Dr. on the morning of the third day if I wanted to go home or stay a couple more days, I told him I wanted to go home. I honestly fealt like my health could be jeopardized if I continued to stay in the hospital.

I kept a good attitude and got out of there in three days. The staff was great and gave me time alone, which I really need after having surgery.the bed I had was broken and that's about the only negative thing I can think of.My overall experience was great.Everyone was kind and informative, not pushy. They allowed my husband to stay late and hang out all day.Whenever I pushed the call button, someone was there within 5-10 min. Overall score-9-
