Comments: Orderly ran over my IV line when transporting me to xray and then got mad at me when I yelled out in paid as it pulled out of my vein and had to be reinserted. Apparently it was tangled in the weels. Other than that, professional staff were very kind and helpful. I did end up with strep throat the day after being relased, but I can't confirm it was due to the hospital stay.

How Selected: this was the only NJ hospital my doctor was affliatiated with..he is on staff here.
Competitors: This was standard practice for NJ hospitals servicing bariatric patients back in 2000
Comments: I would want to know there is a bariatric floor with dedicated nurses...my experience back in 2000 was a few rooms located on the orthopedic floor and nurses were uneducated with how to handle obese patients.

How Selected: I am loyal to this hospital, I have had many surgeries there and will continue to do so if I ever need surgery again
Competitors: never used another hospital
Comments: The nurses were so nice and very accomidating, only thing that stunk was the fact that they take you vitals like every two hours in the evening, so you get woken up alot, but that is a small price to pay when they are only doing it for your health

How Selected: My doc works there
Competitors: Having worked at Hackensack U. Med. Center. I know that they are much more attentive to their patients.
Comments: The RN's were excellent but obviously at most times overworked. The Nursing Assistants left MUCH to be desired. LAZY! If you use St. Peter's - be firm but insistant with the Nursing Assistants on what you need. One repeatedly came into my room, turned off the call light, said she'd be back and never came back. I had to be insistant about bathing assistance, help picking things up if I dropped them, etc. I can't stress enough how good I thought the actual RN's were

Competitors: I had a better experience at the hospital I had my Gall Bladder removed at.
Comments: The hospital in general was good. They do need to learn to give us post-ops a sugar free diabetic clear liquid diet after surgery and after the leak test. They tried to give me liquids but the jello and italian ice was loaded with sugar. I had to send it back and then they didn't bring me another tray until the next meal. But, that is ok. I was completely happy with my ice chips.

How Selected: My doctor is affiliated with this specific hospital.
Competitors: I thought that ths staff was very nice, but the place is definately under-staffed. This was very difficult because they weren't always available to attend to me when I rang the buzzer. Many times I needed imediate attention and had to scream out for somebody to come from the hallway to help.
Comments: Overall the hospital was nice. The facility is pleasant. I had one very bad experience during my emergency room admission. It was with one employee though, so I won't blame the entire staff. Anyway, St. Peters is an alright hospital.

Comments: I feel the hospital and its staff should be more aware of overweight patients. I think it should be better perpared in handling these kind of patients. To help us move, our feelings should be addressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How Selected: This is the only hospital that Dr. Brolin practices out of.
Competitors: I was in St. Peters for the birth of my daughter a year earlier and the quality of care was no different on 2G(Bariatrics/Orthopaedics) then it was on Maternity.
Comments: St. Peters is VERY understaffed. Due to this the nurses on 2G are never the same (with a few exceptions). I think if they were better staffed the care by and education on how to handle obese patients for nurses would be greater. I personally had NO problems w/the nursing staff. The questions regarding quiet and privacy are really not relavant because lets face it, your in a hospital...it's never quiet and privacy is rare unless you have a private room! St. Peter's has a lot to learn about caring for obese patients and the committee members of Dr. Brolin's support group, myself included are working SUPER hard to teach nurses about how to care for us.

Comments: The SICU nurses were fabulous. The floor nurses were OK, but too overworked and understaffed to really be of much help. (God bless them--you couldn't pay me enough to do their job!)
