Safety and Outcomes

CCBS was named an American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, a designation given by the ASBS and the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) to surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. The designation also recognizes program surgeons Helmut Schreiber, MD, Indu Sonpal, MD, and Aviv Ben-Meir, MD.

St. Vincent Charity Hospital has sponsored the development of the Cleveland Center for Bariatric Surgery, the largest multidisciplinary program of its kind for the surgical treatment of morbid obesity in Northeastern Ohio. How Selected: The surgeon, Dr Ben-Meir, was recommended to me. He practices out of St. Vincent Charity Hospital.
Competitors: I have been in large and small hospitals before, but I have never been more comfortable with the staff than I was at St. Vincent.

Comments: The entire hospital staff was wonderful during my stay. Kind and caring. I had different nurses each shift of the 3 days (6 nurses) and 5 of then were simply outstanding to my needs and requests, the 6th was average. At times they were busy and you'd hit the call button, and have to wait 30-45 mins for them to respond... but these were for general requests and I didn't hesitate to call again if I needed some thing faster. Over all, the response was quick. Overall my expereince from Adminsions- discharge was simply Excellent. I was taken back at how kind every one was at St V's Charity

How Selected: I selected this hospital because of my surgeon, Dr. Ben-Mier. He has excellent statistics (no post surg. leaks, no deaths, etc.)
Competitors: In comparison to other local programs, this one is the best. It is known throughout Cleveland area, if you are having this surgery, you want to go to St. Vincent Charity. They are VERY thorough in all preop testing. It can be a lengthy time before you get through your consults, but they (and you) know exactly what is wrong with you, and where you stand medically.
Comments: I was very happy with them. I don't care for the area that the hospital is in, but the hospital cant help that, and I've never had a problem.

How Selected: Based on the surgeon's experience
Competitors: A bit outdated but clean.
Comments: Overall the hospital meet my expectations except after surgery the failed to tell my husband that I was sent to ICU instead of the bariatric floor, sendingt him on a wild goosechase to locate me. I felt ICU could have been a bit more attentive. They had one patient requiring immediate attention, however there were more than one patient in ICU to look after.

How Selected: I selected this hospital because it was rated the best in the State. I think it was rated by professionals and not obese patients.
Comments: Staff ignores call lights. Room intercom comes on asking how they may help you, They Never can hear you, especially after surgery when because of anesthesia your weak and can barely speak. Then you are forced to Yell what you need the other rooms can hear you . In my experience I needed to go to bathroom I was ignored for over an hour, causing me the humiliating experience of diarrhea incontinence. When the staff finally did (2 hours later) come in because of the smell, she apologized explaining that they were in report and short of help. My family came in at the same time and was disgusted by the stench. Needless to say they was livid! Another day I was forced to hold my urine so long, by the time nursing responded I couldn't go, I believe they considered me an incompliant patient. I finally explained all this has been going all day to my Doctor and he ordered a folly catheter and there was over 900cc of urine in my Bladder!! By the way I couldn’t walk myself because I was fainting and medicated. If I had my choice I would NEVER go back, but my doctors only practices there. I adore them and to have them .

How Selected: I chose this hospital because it is a Center of Excellance. It was also recommended by an orthopedic doctor who practices at a different Cleveland Hospital
Comments: I found everyone at St Vincents to be very friendly and helpful. From the person at the main entrance reception desk to the nursing aid who took us to the front door when I was released, everyone was just super. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I was impressed with how well the staff kept my family informed of what was happening with me at all times. The entire staff is to be commended on their excellent caring attitude.

How Selected: Friends I knew went there and they were to have an inpeckable reputation for Overweight patients.
Competitors: Cleveland Clinic, Hillcrest, Lake West was awesome. Loved them! St. Vincent, not so much. My experience has soured my view of the hospital.
Comments: I would have gotten better care, attention and comfort from my two small children at home!!!

How Selected: Recommended by accquaintence.
Competitors: Outdated rooms, controls on bed and call light didn't work most of the time.
Comments: Couldn't get assistance half the time when I needed it or pain meds, had to constantly remind the nurses to give me my prescribed medications, and the rooms are very outdated and the call light or bed controls didn't work & nothing done to fix them.

How Selected: After researching various local hospitals, St. Vincent's had the best track record.
Competitors: The hospital is by far the best in the Cleveland area for bariatric surgery.

How Selected: They have the most experience in Bariatric surgery with the least complications. I chose Dr. Ben-Meir, and he is just superior. I could not have been in better hands.
Competitors: I only wanted it done at St. Vincents. My insurance allowed me to go to any hospital, but I chose the best place for me.

Comments: I had an excellent experience. The nurses were so nice and receptive to my needs.

Competitors: For this type of surgery I think it wins hands down.
Comments: The nurses (even on a holiday weekend) were tops. They were kind, concerned and my advocate with the docs when I had a set back. The doctor wanted to send me home on day two, but the nurse didn't think I was ready and told the doctor and they kept me a extra day. How many nurses would do that.

How Selected: insurance approval with Dr. Ben-Meir for lap band
Competitors: I usually go to Mercy Medical Center in Canton, which is a sister hospital for St. Vincent Charity Hosp, and they are both compairable - everyone is so supportive, etc.
Comments: I was very pleased with all the aspects... yes - it is an older hospital, but the care recieved is great! The nuses on the 5th floor were GREAT! helped with anything needed.

How Selected: It's where the insurance covered & the dr practiced.
Competitors: I was a nurse and I would not ignore the beeping machines like they did! Got very little sleep at night because things were always beeping (all over the floor). Call lights answered over PA, but no one came in.
Comments: They need more staffing & better education on obesity issues with post-op care.

How Selected: Their surgeons are leaders in bariatric surgery.
Competitors: I wish their surgeons would transfer to Akron City. Between them and City's nurses they would be on top of the world!
Comments: With the exception of two nurses I barely SAW ANY nurse. The only time they come in is if you press the call button. One nurse the day of surgery left my call button on the nightstand and I was in pain and had to wait for the nurses assistant to come in to take my vitals before I could call anyone. That was 2 HOURS later!!!
