About this Hospital
University General Hospital

YOU ARE NOT ALONE:

At University General Hospital, we understand that obesity is rapidly becoming a national healthcare problem. More importantly, we understand that the issue is personal to you.

You are not alone in dealing with the life-threatening disease of morbid obesity, and our staff of professional experts is here to help.

Until now, morbid obesity has been a difficult disease to treat because it is a multi-factorial disease and no one treatment has been considered a “cure.” Contributing factors for obesity include genetics, environment, socio-economic, psychological, and medical. All of these factors come into play when dealing with and treating morbid obesity.

No, you are not alone in dealing with the disease of obesity.

Obesity is considered “morbid” when it reaches the point of significantly increasing the risk of obesity-related health conditions or serious diseases that can cause death or disability. Some of the diseases and co-morbidities include:

• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Sleep Apnea
• Heart Disease
• Gallstones and Gallbladder Disease
• High Cholesterol
• Osteoarthritis
• Respiratory Problems
• Gout
• Cancer
• Stroke
• Infertility
• Depression
• Pregnancy Complications
• Urinary Incontinence

YOU ARE NOT ALONE:

The good news is that surgical intervention is now used to treat morbid obesity. Many individuals seeking surgical treatment for morbid obesity do so because they wish to resolve co-morbidities such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension. In type 2 diabetes, we find that surgery “cures” this form of diabetes in nearly 98 percent of patients. In fact, many patients leave the hospital after surgery never requiring diabetic medications again.

At University General Hospital, our bariatric surgeons are all board certified, are highly-experienced, and are nationally-renowned experts in the field of bariatric surgery. They bring a compassionate and caring spirit to the operating room, the patient’s bedside, and the journey to recovery that is unsurpassed.

Our hospital:
• features state-of-the art technology, all integrated in a five-star luxurious setting specially tailored with your needs in mind;
• employs nationally-recognized nursing, allied health, and ASBS affiliate associate professionals, including members of the NABN national planning committee, Bariatric RN Credentialing Task Force

YOU ARE NOT ALONE:

You are not alone as you seek information about surgery to resolve your health issues related to obesity. The bariatric surgeons at University General Hospital have literally helped thousands of people lose their excess weight, resolve their co-morbid conditions, and begin to live healthier lives.

At University General Hospital, we offer surgical options to fit you, the patient, because we know “one size fits all” really doesn’t apply.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU.

If you have questions about weight-loss surgery or about any of our board certified bariatric surgeons, please call us at (713) 375-7650.

If you would like to attend one of our free pre-operative educational seminars, please call (713) 659-9500 or dial 1-800-THINK-THIN to register to attend.

How Selected: My doctor selected the hospital but I have absolutely no REGRETS!!!!
Competitors: This hospital was very clean and the staff was wonderful. My room was wonderful. I could not have asked for a better hospital stay. Something I just realized was that this hospital did not even smell like a hospital. I know that if you have been in hospitals before for a procedure or just to visit someone they have this certain smell, well I just realized this one did not.
Comments: This hospital was SUPERB!!!! If I ever have to go to the hospital again I sure hope that it is this one even though it is an hour away from home.

How Selected: Dr.'s preferred hospital, and could get me in same day for emergent situation. Agreed to work within my benefits as well.
Competitors: WAY MORE COMFORTABLE, CLEAN, SPA LIKE EXPERIENCE.
Comments: Very clean and welcoming. I love that it is an "elective procedures" hospital, so no sickie germs! Nicely appointed, and staff seems more adept at dealing with bariatric post op than my previous experience in town. It was somewhat disconcerting that vitals were every 6 hrs vs every 4...but I think that is just me and my experiences. Really, it made it very easy to rest comfortably. It would be my choice if it were necessary again.

How Selected: It was by pure chance, the original hospital I was set to have surgery at was late receiving a shipment of supplies due to switching vendors. None the less I didnt like the look for they other hospital anyway. UGH was better than almost EVERY 5 star hotel Ive ever stayed in.
Competitors: No, THERE IS NONE LIKE IT!!!!! ITS THE GREATEST! I hated to leave.
Comments: This hospital was the greatest. I didnt know if I was there for surgery or a honeymoon. It was the greatest, It was my first time ever having to be in the hospital for ANYTHING, and I think that I have now been spoiled to the quality and service at UGH. From start to finish, it looked and felt like I was in a 5 star hotel. Thanks UGH!

Comments: I have never been in such a clean, serene hospital in my city. I have had numerous stays in hospitals here and this is by far the best I have ever been in. The staff from the emergency room, to the hospital room, to the surgery staff is so excellent that I will go there, if I have to, for anything to do with my lapband.

Competitors: Hospital and rooms gorgeous, unit staff extremely accomodating, but, in my opinion, ER doc inexperienced and incapable - thank God for ER nurses and staff for basically taking over situation!
Comments: My experience left me with an opinion of no confidence in the ability of the ER docs to properly assess, treat, and stabilize a patient with a moderate level emergency or anything more serious.

Competitors: I found it to be amazingly clean, and the staff seemed to go out of their way to make sure that I was doing alright. If I had a choice again, I'd choose UGH.
Comments: The staff was supurb; no waiting to speak of, they hit my veins on the first attempts (both blood and the IV) with very little pain. The staff was in on the weekend to do this, and they were still cheerful and compassionate, on their normal day off. I would recommend them to anyone at any time. My only problem was with the nurses aide. She took out my IV before she was supposed to take it out, so it took a bit to get my pain back under control.

How Selected: My surgeon is one of the owners of this new hospital and I was able to get an earlier surgery date than if I waited for availability at The Methodist Hospital.
Competitors: It is less like a hospital and more like a resort or cruise ship in several ways. The decor is one, the attitude of customer service from all the staff, and the Chefs who prepare the food. It is reallly a great place.
Comments: Reported to hospital at 6 am, and grand piano was playing in this elegant lobby. Fast admit then on to pre op. I was called withing 5 minutes and taken back to change clothes and have the nurses and other staff do their thing. The gowns are not user friendly in terms of figuring out how to tie in back, and very large. I was taken into the OR after my family was called back to sit with me for about 30 minutes. I woke up in recovery three hours later, only vaguely remember moving from the stretcher to the OR table. I was taken to my room within a half and hour of waking up. My family was waiting in the room and it was a huge room, with couch and bariatric chair. The bariatric coordinator was very helpful pre op in finding my room number for my family to wait in, even went to make sure the room was correct which it wasn't and then she got me a new room. The nurses at the station tell the family when to go down to talk to the surgeon. There are no food trays, you all when you want food anytime of day or night. Even my broth was obviously homemade with a real chicken. Confirmed that with the chef myself. Patient care staff are very professional and caring and have a great attitude. They were pulled from other great hospitals in town. The only billed me an in network fee for the hospital stay, and confirmed that there will be no other bills from anyone as it all covered under the one $100 copay. Parking is not convenient unless you valet park as the garage is three buildings back behind the hospital, but valet is only $4.00.

Comments: For a hospital whose dedication is patient's safety, comfort and well being, they fell way short of this goal in my situation.
